Glyphosat, Hauptwirkstoff der meisten handelsüblichen Herbizide, ist ein Pflanzengift. Es vergiftet aber nicht nur Pflanzen, sondern schleichend auch Tiere und Menschen. An einer deutschen Universität wurden Urinproben der städtischen Bevölkerung auf Belastungen mit Glyphosat untersucht. Alle Proben wiesen erhebliche Konzentrationen des Herbizidwirkstoffes auf, sie lagen um das 5 bis 20fache über dem Grenzwert von Trinkwasser.
Die meisten Herbizide, die in der Landwirtschaft eingesetzt werden, aber auch zum Unterhalt von Gleisanlagen, städtischen Gehwegen, Straßenrändern und Kleingärten dienen, enthalten den Wirkstoff Glyphosat. Die bekanntesten Glyphosat-Herbizide sind die von Monsanto hergestellten Roundup-Produkte, doch seit Ablauf des Patentes werden sie auch von zahlreichen anderen Agrochemie-Konzernen wie Syngenta, Bayer, Nufarm oder DowAgro Science hergestellt und vertrieben. Die Hälfte der rund 800 000 Tonnen Glyphosat, die jedes Jahr weltweit produziert werden, kommen mittlerweile aus China.
Das 1950 in der Schweiz entwickelte und 1970 von Monsanto synthetisierte Glyphosat greift sehr stark in den Stoffwechsel von Pflanzen ein und verhindert die Bildung lebenswichtiger Aminosäuren. Glyphosat ist ein systemisch wirkendes Breitband-Gift gegen fast alle grünen Pflanzen. In Abhängigkeit von der Stoffwechselintensität sterben behandelte Pflanzen innerhalb weniger Tage vollständig ab.
Durch gentechnische Veränderungen wurden von Monsanto, Bayer und anderen Firmen Pflanzen entwickelt, die resistent gegen Glyphosat sind. So können Plantagen mit genmodifizierten Mais, Soja oder Raps mit Glyphosat abgespritzt werden, um Unkraut zwischen den Kulturpflanzen zu vernichten.
