Croatian tax authorities failed to collect 51,3 billion kuna (7 billion euros) in the last twelve years according to the Croatian Ministry of Finance.

Croatian tax authorities failed to collect 51,3 billion kuna (7 billion euros) in the last twelve years according to the Croatian Ministry of Finance.

The biggest debt incurred last year, when 11,7 billion kuna (1,6 billion euros) in taxes were not paid.

Croatian newspaper 'Novi list' calculated that if those taxes had been collected last year's annual debt would have been about four billion kuna (600 million euros) rather than the actual amount of 14,7 billion kuna (2 billion euros).

In the Croatian parliament, during the discussion about tax administration laws on Wednesday and Thursday, both opposition and government criticised the fact that the state failed to collect taxes.

“Currently we are owed more than 50 billion kuna of unpaid taxes. It's half of the state budget. Such a level of evasion can't be accidental. It can happen only intentionally”, said Nikola Vuljanic, Member of Parliament for the opposition Croatian labour party.

Finance minister Slavko Linic announced that the new centre-left government aims to publish the list of tax debtors. He said that almost 400,000 enterprises and about 1,3 million citizens have not paid their taxes.
