There seems to be some similar features between the French and the Bulgarians. I was wondering if maybe the 'Dinaric Belt' had any sort of influence on that.

Hmm, maybe is more like Atlanto-med/Pontid similarity, not so Dinaric one. Dinarid type is still not very common here, compared with Serbia, for example.

I think that's it exactly. The last time I was classified, I didn't reveal my ethnicity, and quite a few of the classifiers were unsure whether I was pred. Pontid or Atlanto-Med.

I agree. Almost certainly the large group photo with the Russian Patriarch Aleksej and the photo of the girls with the banty are Russians. I have not seen girls still wearing banty outside of Russia, Ukraine or Belarus.

Not really. Bulgarian looks closer to Ukrainian. Serbs and Albanians are mostly Balkan CM and Dinarid whereas Bulgarian are mostly Pontid.

The Bulgarians where I live are always hard-working and kind people. Most of the ones here do look Southeastern European but with noticeable northern influences as well. That is what I based my opinion on.. and firsthand experience where I have seen Bulgarians and thought they looked kind of Greek but not quite.

I think people here might also imagine Greeks darker than they really are as well. When I say someone looks Greek, I am not envisioning some swarthy stereotype.

In 19th century, before their migration to Bessarabia, the Gagauzes from the Bulgarian lands (then in Ottoman Turkey) considered themselves Bulgarians. Ethnological research suggest that "Gagauz" was a linguistic distinction and not ethnic. Gagauzes at that time called themselves "Hasli Bulgar" (True Bulgars) or "Eski Bulgar" (Old Bulgars) and considered the term "Gagauz" applied to them by the Slavic-speaking Bulgarians (who they called "toukan") demeaning.

Most of the men simply died in battles and after that they were replaced by other people who were part of the country (Slavs) This is one of the theory, taken from some old chronicles about Bulgaria.

Well as you know, most Moldovan Gagauzes originally came from N-E Bulgaria, very close to Pliska (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pliska) but they speak a Oghuz language (not communicable with Anatolian Turkish) and Bulgar was a Oghur languange - so they can't be Bulgars - their language can't at least. Others linked them to Pechenegs (who did speak Oghuz) or from the short lived Dobruja principality (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Principality_of_Karvuna).

Gagauzes don't look Bulgarian based on haplogroups, to much R1a, G and not enough E1b1b1.

Is it possible to convert them back to Christianity? Are any steps being taken in that direction? Do Bulgrians consider them equal to Christian Bulgarians in general?

Well, there was this ill-conceived operation in the 80s to change the names of the muslim people(pomaks, turks, tatars etc.) in the country from Turko-Arabic ones to Christian ones or traditional Bulgarian in order to assimilate them in the general(now mostly secular due to Communism) populace. It was dubbed the "Revival process", probably in an effort to draw ethos from the period in Bulgarian history called National Revival(basically the time of emergence and consolidation of the Bulgarian nation).

Now it did not achieve its intended outcome, because of serious opposition from the muslims, including mass protests, illegal terrorist groups(that carried out several bombings, most notably in a passenger train's mother and children carriage).

The authorities had failed to communicate properly to the people what were they doing and why(bad public diplomacy experts in the nomenklatura cadres). The casualties that followed protests-suppressing didn't help, nor did the mass imprisonment of muslim leaders.

The ethnic relations in the country were seriosly shaken. As it turned out not terminally, though.

As a result of these events the ethnic and therefore unconstitutional party Movement for rights and freedom(MRF) was created in the early 90s and became an important factor in post-communism Bulgarian political life.

It had however one positive aspect to it. Some 320 000 Bulgarian Turks left the country for neighbouring Turkey(most of them permanently), which in my opinion prevented a Bosnia\Kosovo scenario for Bulgaria.

Of course, the image of the country in the international community was badly damaged as a consequence of these developments(as if already not bad enough after the alleged Bulgarian involvement in the attempted assassination of pope John Paul II and the notorious murder of dissident Georgi Markov in London(the so called BG umberllea)). After all one might look at it as a classical ethnic cleansing operation, though not as bloody.

After Communism fell in 1990 there was this Orthodox priest- father Boyan Saryev, himself from pomak background who has since converted vast number of Pomaks to Orthodoxy.

Generally most Pomaks living in eastern Rodopa mountains consider themselves Bulgarian due to being neighbours with compact Turkish communities. Those from the western parts of Rodopa however stick to a Muslim\Turkish (I'd say Ottoman) identity due to being neighbours with Orthodox Bulgarians. Overall Pomaks are perceived as Bulgarian by most Bulgarians(with only marginal groups resenting them).

Recently there have been some scandals in several Pomak vilages involving wahhabi activity but those are being taken care of by the state security agencies.

There is a numerous Pomak community in Turkey, but the number of people still speaking Bulgarian as first language is obscure.

Even more unclear is the situation of Pomaks in Greece.

There are differences of course, North Italy have Borreby, we have Gorid.
North Italy doesn't have Pontid at all, it's East European/Caucassian type.
North Italians are slightly lighter IMO, but it's not very big difference, I think facial features matter more.
