They're not Haitians. Dominicans and Haitian have a noticeable different between each other. In the photos above you'll notice the contrast between an Afro-Dominican and a Haitian.

Mixed is the correct word, if they where "black" they where 98-100% black, just as you must be 98-100% euro to be "white". We don't have a one drop rule like in the US anyways, you're classified by your physical and skin color.

Not at all, Cuba has way more Criollos then DR. 30-50% VS 5-15%.

Many Cuban Criollos have fled to the US (Miami, Orlando and such), most of them are in western Cuba while Eastern Cuba is infested with Haitians now.

Our population is mainly composed of mixed Tri racials, followed by a minority of blacks (afro dominicans and haitians) and whites.

"White people" in these pictures are indeed mestizos or castizos.

Some Dominicans are castizos, but thats a tiny percentage and are commonly classified as "white", the rest are triracials, with a few whites and pure blacks.

The people you called "black" in the photo are in fact triracials ( euro, african, amerind)..

That's a misconception.

Studies have shown that out of 1,000 DR participants, more then 16% had Taino genes in them to some degree.

About 60,000 Tainos remained in the island after Spain's influence diminished, they mixed with the non amerind population (less then 1 million at that time). There are no "rules" for the degree of amerind, african or european a person must have to be tri racial, I think +10% is more then enough.

Words:

Here are some Taino words that are still alive in Dominican Spanish. Notice, some words have been officially incorporated into Spanish due to a lack of Spanish word for that particular item (ie. Ceiba, Hamaca, etc). Other words are use interchangeably with their Spanish counterparts (ie. Bohio and Casita, Mucaro and Buho, etc). Also, some words are exclusively used in the DR, Puerto Rico, and Cuba (ie. Katey, Jibaro, etc).

Also, keep in mind that often many Taino words are used as idiomatic expressions and/or idioms.
Also, this is only a small selection of Taino words used in Dominican Spanish. Other Spanish countries adapted some of this words as well. Heck, there's a whole DR region named after the Taino definition of stone mountains...

Guagua = n: Bus or Car, a form of transit. This word derives from the sound associated the object, in this case a horn. Interesting that it is also the Quechua word for baby, probably for a similar reason....

Aji = n : Hot Pepper.

Anacaona = n : Golden Flower.

Areito = n : A Traditional Dances with spoken historic songs.

Arepa = n : Corn Cake.

Bara = n : Kill or Death, also a whip.

Barbacoa = n : A Stand, a four legged stand, made of sticks, used in the cooking process of roasting meat.

Batata = n : Sweet Potato.

Bohio = n : small square house (typical countryside homes).

Cocuyo = n : Small Lighting Bug, with a blueish light, they come out at night.

Colibri = n : Hummingbird.

Cana = n : Any number of Palmetto trees (A type of palmetto are the palms that line the malecon of Santo Domingo)

Ceiba = n: Silkcotton Tree (These are gigantic trees visible in the Cibao valley especially, many are upwards of 300 years old!)

Canoa = n : Small Boat.

Cacike = n : Chief.

Catey or Katey = n : Disturb, bother.

Cibao = n : Stone Mountains (today Cibao is the name of the valley, not the mountain range which Cordillera Central)

Cojiba = n : Rolled Tabacco

Cucubano = n : Large Lighting Bug.

Choreto = n : Abundance.

Guaraguao = n : Red Tailed Hawk.

Guama = n : Large Shade Tree, a fruit Tree.

Guagua = n : Bus or Car, a form of transit.

Guajey = n : Gord Scraper also known as a Guira.

Guayo = n : Grater.

Hamaca = n : Hanging Bed.

Hutia = n : Rat like roden, native to Hispaniola.

Iguana = n : Large Green Lizard.

Jaiba = n : River Crab or Freshwater Crayfish River.

Jicotea = n : Land Turtle.

Jibaro = n : Man of the Forest.

Manati = n : Sea Cow.

Mabi = n : A Fruit tree.

Maraca = n : Gord Rattle, Musical Instrument made of Higuera gord.

Maco = n: Frog.

Maguey = n : Big Sun, a Drum. (See the word Mayohuacan).

Manicato = n : A Bold person, valiant of a good heart.

Mime = n : Little Fly.

Mucaro = n : Owl.

Naiboa = n : The poisonous juice of the Yuca brava.

Nana = n : Girl. (Dominicans often say Nena as oppose to Nana).

Sabana = n : Big Valle or Large Plain.

Sanaco = n : Clown, Dope or Stupid.

Tabacu = n : Tabacco.

Tiburon = n : Shark.

Yagua = n: A small palm native to Hispaniola.

Yabisi = n : Tree.

Most Mexicans on 23andme have between 0-5% African.. by this standard, Mexicans are triracials too.

So you're saying that Mexicans are triracials when their percentage of african is a pathetic 0-5% vs +10% amerind in Dominicans on average. Mexicans are majority mestizos, not triracials. Dominicans are a triracial society, that's why we don't have classification for ourselves as mulato nor mestizo, but rather triracial as we simply call it "mixed"...

I implied not just +16% of Dominicans have Taino, but on average all of these people with Amerindian are in or around 10% Amerind. You should go take a trip to western DR, it might sound blacker as it's closer to Haiti, but it's rather a different case its people are have the largest amerind percentage of the whole country.

I'm quite familar with Dominicans living in Miami for a while. From what I've seen the majority are a Iberian/West African mixture than leans on the African side, with minorities than look pure White or pure Black. Most Dominicans in the western world would be seen as Black because the Negro features are noticable in most Dominicans.

Mexicans got that African by proxy but there's no way Dominicans got that Native Admixture by proxy.

They have it usually because there was once a large slave population in Mexico that since has blended into the mestizo population such that you don't have any visible black people there now but many people have a small amount of ancestry from those Africans.

I do not think these people are tri-racial at all, and many people agree with me. Most Dominicans seem to be Mulatos with an emphasis on Black admixture, this "Indio" element, I do not see it lol. I also know that Dominican Republic is one of the least White of the Latin American nations. With all of the Haitien immigration, some think it will end up a majority Black nation soon, lol.

About the Haitians, yes they had a strong influence in Dominican demographics, but that was just in past. Today Dominicans hardly mixed with haitians, specially the middle and upper class who compose about 40-60% of the country. Haitians can't even become citizens unless they had one Dominican linear parent.

Heck, it's way more usual to see a Dominican with a Puerto Rican, or Cuban who don't even share border then with a Haitian.

I know the country from top to toe, and I know that the indian influence is strong both genetically and culturally. Someone from outside might find it hard to believe it as they're not form there, that's why I made this thread to get rid of the foreign misconceptions of DR.

It was me estimate, here are the actual statistics. Mines where right in the 40,60%...

2009.

43%
Highest class: 6% of the total pop (570,000 people / 142,500 homes).
Higher middle class: 17% of the population (1.6 million people/ 400,000 homes).
Middle class: 20% of the population (1.9 million people / 475,000 homes).

57%

Low class: 47% of pop (4.5 million people / 1,125,000 homes).
Bellow poverty: 10% of pop (950,000 people / 237,500 homes).

Heard that our middle class had increased by a lot more now then what it was back in 09'. ...

it has a lot of poor areas I must be honest but never like Nicaragua or Haiti who are really the poorest with Haiti being #1.

We have have a Lebanese community spread all over and from other parts of Western Asia.

The Baptist church I grew up in one of the mayor pastors is of Lebanese descent.

No, the people in the photos above (previous page) aren't cherry picked, these are the real average looks of people from the northern regions of DR which have lighter complexion, they don't migrate to much to the states or most likely to be found living in Florida or other non- North-Eastern states.

I mean, almost all of the people in the photos look either quadroon or triracial, with a few pure whites. I just, in the US, have not seen many Dominicans that white.

I have met every kind, seeing from the darkest one to the lightest. I have not seeing a pure black neither, unless is a haitian person who calls himself Dominican, but then by law they're not dominican just foreigners. I do know a half dominican and half haitian, but even he shows sings of being mixed. In the European side, Dominican males do usually have R1b as there Y-dna, and it's usually amerind or african on the maternal lineage like in my case. It makes sense since European males mated with african or amerindian descendants back then.

Good question, and yeah I'm also amazed at this huge demographic difference.
The reason why there are a little or almost no Amerindian blood in the Haitian side is because some French colonists got rid of many of them, others fled to the much safer eastern part of Hispaniola (DR) or to the mountains. There are some Haitian that might have Amerind but the intermingling with slaves and Europeans in that part of the island was very rare.... The greatest influence I would say, by Taino-Arawak giving to Haiti/ayti is it's own name which in native language means "mountainous country" . some say that some elements of voodoo was influenced by Taino-Arawak believes / rituals.

Yes, it's very surprising see the racial difference, also because the island isn't so big...this is a good example how colonial administration worked different in the euro colonial empires.

Is DR a popular destination for American tourists?

Heck yes, now more then ever many have left other destination in Latin American for DR due to decreased risks of getting kidnapped and killed by drug cartels. Also more then 50,000 American and Canadians live or reside for some time in DR. Sadly crime has risen due to Haitian immigration and some selfish and uneducated Dominicans themselves, but hopefully our next presidents gets rids of these parasites.

It will be ok, these are just isolated situations that unfortunately happen. But don't have to worry as the ratio is low and only people who act like the world will never end or careless get hurt.

If you ever do go keep in mind this or you will be disappointed. Know that you will be visiting a third world country or to be politically correct a “developing country”, many of the luxuries and even basic necessities that you take for granted in the States and Europe are gone. For example Blackouts are a normal occurrence almost on a daily basis. You will see a lot of poverty, can even be shocking. On the crime side you will be pretty much safe once you take pertinent measures as you would when traveling to any developing country. Unless you venture alone into the marginal barrios(which not even the locals go) you will be alright. Tourists occasionally get robbed but nothing more than that rarely happens. Always let know the American Embassy that you will be visiting anytime you visit an iffy country. And visit the passport website for tips and warnings pertaining to the country you will be visiting.

But then again if you go to a tourist resort you will never see any of above. You will enjoy the people, tropical weather year round, nice beaches, the night life, colonial architecture, fishing, sailing, ecotourism is a growing industry and finally the women are stunning, you will encounter some of the most beautiful women to ever walk the earth. In fact the country is well known for attracting many “Sex Tourists” from EU nations; Italy, Germany, Great Britain, France, etc… in fact the country is one of the biggest sex tourism destinations in the world. Not that I’m endorsing that but hey enjoy your stay!!

Generalizing isn't a good idea, as every place is like almost different from one another, except for the women like Mago said, they're beautiful everywhere:cool:

He looks central african influenced unlike me Senegal, Mali.. I would say about 40%-60% of the times in males depending where you are.

There are no Greeks in DR that I know of that came in colonial times in a surmountable amount. He's probably less Euro then me with higher African and Amerind, in other words text book tri-racial physically (if not almost).

Half Greek where is he from ?

40% ssa I think that's bit to much considering her looks, has to be around 25-35% no more then 35% I'd say. 20% Amerind is too high, the average is 5-7%.

You can ask someone from Cibao region, the ones in 23andme average 60% European. I'd say about 65% and around 10% native, with 35% SSA

Yeah but it's not that "rare". Depends on the city. I agree that in most cities you would stand off but South apart you could pass in the Southwest (São Paulo, Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro and Espirito Santo). I mean, Ronaldinho Gaucho is from Porto Alegre. But in most countryside cities of the South the majority of the population is either still fully German or Italian.

There where many Canarians that settled in this town, some mixed with the locals, others remained (same or close) genetically over time. You can see one of them who's an elder man fourth to last, (in 2nd post). One interesting thing is it also has the highest percentage of Japanese descendants in the country and as the Canarian settlers, some mixed others remained pure Japanese.

16% of Dominicans having Taino ancestry may be, but I mean each individual Dominican is likely not nearly as much Taino as African or European. Not enough to warrant me viewing Dominicans as tri-ethnic.

Most Mexicans on 23andme have between 0-5% African.. by this standard, Mexicans are triracials too.

The difference is that for Mexicans, or Americans by the way, black blood is a shame. On the other hand, for most peoples of the Americans, to have Indigenous blood is a privilege. In the New World, everyone wants to be a descendant of Pocahontas.

Never forget that.

Spanish Caribbean peoples, and also Brazilians, have an Amerindian genomics close to 30%, from which the Dominicans have the lowest percentage (around 15%, which is twice the white American, anyways), but indeed they show the indigenous features in many pictures in this thread.

Puerto Ricans have more Amerindian influence I think, and less African. I would say most of the people in these pics do have noticeable African influence and maybe 1 in every 4 has some Amerindian. European is dominant.

Almost all if not all have some minor or decent Amerindian, here's a study done by a Puerto Rican on both islands, he talks about the Amerindian influence and destribution comparison in both places.

I mean, almost all of the people in the photos look either quadroon or triracial, with a few pure whites. I just, in the US, have not seen many Dominicans that white.

I see a much higher prevalence of lighter Dominicans in the US than I do on the island. Many of my relatives on my dad's side who were tan while living on the island, look pale/Quadroon-esque after moving to the Northeast. I'm at the darker end of the spectrum at most family gatherings, and I'm probably around 55% SSA, based on my phenotype. Very light-yellow and olive tones are the norm among my paternal relatives living in the US, and they were more-or-less a typical family for their native region before they migrated.

Welcome fellow countryman. :thumb001: I'm in the 37-40% SSA spectrum in my case, and I'm average in my dad's side of the family, and a bit darker then average on mom's, which has an unmixed Spanish grandfather.

hah Dominicans had back then and still have that laid back behavior and tradition of Southern Europeans, get together after hard work day kinda thing, enjoy a drink with friends, nice food, and a good siesta.
