Inspired by Artisch thread about Bulgarians I am starting one about the Dutch. The problem with Dutch pictures is that normal picture are very rare. Most pictures show people partying or have a lot of foreigners on it. But nevertheless I found a couple of pictures:

Like most North/West-European peoples the Dutch are at their best during summer as two pictures will show- then the smiles re-appear on the faces and the beer and wine flows in rich quantities. (and no one bothers about the price).

1995 song (in those days people still believed in multiculturalism so one or two times you'll see a "new Dutchman" (as it was euphemistically called back then) appear as well) that describes the Dutch in all their quirks, their habits.. whatever makes them Dutch.

I think that perhaps Holland and England suffer the most "white flight" in the world. It certainly seems to be the case. A shame that my two ancestral lines are being so viciously attacked. I suppose Holland could be my second home, if it weren't so overcrowded and multcultural.

Why? With the exception of maybe the second picture down, they look Dutch to me. My Dutch family look similar to one or two of those people and their Dutchness is substantiated.

Perhaps their nationality is Dutch and their has been Dutchified over the centuries but in some parts of the country foreign influence crept in ages ago. Take for instance the descendants of Spanish or French soldiers (16th to 18th century) and local women. The descendants of 16th or 17th century immigrants.

Yes of course, but if the Spanish or French ancestry of some Dutch is so great as to make it a significant component of their ancestry, then it would have made an impact upon the entire country (or the south at least), not just some of the darker-looking Dutch. It's extremely unlikely that Spanish/French ancestry is, say, 25% in some of the Southern-Dutch and 0% in the rest. If there is Spanish/French ancestry in some regions, it is probably universal across those regions regardless of how the people look. One Dutchman with light-blonde hair and grey eyes could easily have as much Spanish/French ancestry as another Dutchman who has dark hair and eyes.

My reasons for posting those pictures was to give some input according to my own observations. Obviously you know Holland much better than I do Asega, but in my experience, Holland has as broad a range of pigmentation and phenotype as Britain does.

Atlantomediterranid and Bell Beaker-Dinaroid variants made it in prehistoric times much further to the North actually, so its just possible and most likely, many darker variants stem from those.

I'd assume their legacy is probably even greater in some areas of Northern Europe than dark pigmentation actually, because its possible that selection worked in favour of light pigmentation even between their arrival and our times, as it worked against light pigmentation in much of the Mediterranean world and South Asia f.e.

So a lot of light as well as dark Nordeuropid variants might have Atlantomediterranid and Dinaroid ancestry, resulting especially in rather "Keltic Nordic" and Atlantid phenotypes if traits survived and being otherwise not distinguishable after 4000 years of selection.

As a Dutchman I heart a lot of a fancy tales of the Spanish ancestry of in the inhabitants of Zeeland. But during the war against Spain there were very few Spanish militaries in Zeeland, Schouwen-Duiveland and Goeree-Overflakkee (the darkst areas of the Netherlands). If there is Spanish ancestry, you can find their descendants in Brabant, Limburg and much more in Belgium. In those areas Spanish stayed much more time than in other parts of the Netherlands.

Probably the dark Zeeuwen are descendants of Belgium or French protestant immigrants.
And do not forget the Romans who occupied the Netherlands during some centuries.

In the North (region north of Haarlem-Amsterdam-Zwolle) dark haired and dark eyed
people are practically lacking with the farmers, workers and fishermen. They are pure
descendants of the Germanic tribes more much than the Swedes and Norwegians who
had a lot of Finnish or Sami ancestry!
I absolutely do not believe in the Dinarian or Atlantoid ancestry in the Netherlands.
The Netherlands are a typical Ia en R1b country.

It happens that I´ve family in the Netherlands, "mixed" cousins (1/2 spanish and 1/2 dutch) and both are medium/dark blond. I think it would be necessary a huge demographic impact in the Netherlands to change the population in the way that some people suggest.

I think you're mostly right, but whilst there are many blonde Dutch, in my experience there are a lot of darker Dutch - like my family. But then I suppose there's a variety amongst indigenous people of all European countries including the Nordic ones.

I think that perhaps Holland and England suffer the most "white flight" in the world. It certainly seems to be the case. A shame that my two ancestral lines are being so viciously attacked. I suppose Holland could be my second home, if it weren't so overcrowded and multcultural.

Dutch are not Northern Germans. They are different, but they share similarities though. The Dutch usually have "softer" facial features than Germans. They not as rugged-looking.

I'd rather say Upper Northern Germans (from north-sea regions) , Dutch Frisians and SOuthern/JUtlandic danes are the most germanic looking people. NOrwegians, Icelandic and specially swedes have a more "Scandinavian" look rather than germanic.
