THE Australian Embassy has blasted a racist advert looking for a bricklayer in Perth which includes the instruction that "no Irish" are wanted.

The ad on classifieds website Gumtree states: “Bricklayer needed ASAP. $250 a day, no part-time workers and NO IRISH” – in language reminiscent of the discrimination against the Irish in British cities in the 1950s.

A spokesman for the Embassy said: The Australian Government has no tolerance for racism and discrimination and this is reflected in a broad range of anti-discrimination legislation in Australia.

“The Government has an unwavering commitment to a multicultural Australia and greatly welcomes the contribution made by people of all backgrounds , regardless of origin, gender, or colour, to Australia's culture, society, and prosperity,” he added.

Simon, the man who placed the ad, defended the move today stating that he was sick of Irish people applying for jobs with no experience.

“I have no trouble with Irish people,” he told Independent.ie, but he would not disclose his full name or the name of the company he works for.

“But I’ve had to fire a number of people. I’ve had lots of Irish people say they have experience bricklaying but come over and have no clue how to lay bricks.

“I’m very busy and don’t have time to be watching over them.”

He added that he is well aware of the anti-discriminatory legislation in Australia.

The placement of the ad has drawn attention on the internet and twitter.

Many of the postings reflected shock at the ad.

“Australians like the Irish when they are good they're very very good and when they are bad they a horrid...,” said one tweet.

“Now that’s not very nice now, is it,” said another commentator.

Two years ago it was claimed that “No Irish need apply” signs were going up on building sites in Poland in a bid to take revenge on some unscrupulous builders who treated their staff badly.

A.D. 400. Settlers from the Irish petty kingdom of Dál Riata were beginning to establishing themselves in what would later be called Scotland. Picts were well established north of other Celtic speakers except perhaps on the west coast and in the Hebrides.

A.D. 500. Departure of Roman legions in A.D. 407 left Britain to Picts, other Celtic speakers, and growing numbers of Irish settlers. Enough Scotti were in place by A.D. 490 to allow them to move the seat of Dál Riata from across the Irish Sea.

A.D. 600. Colum Cille left Ireland and established a monastery on Iona in 563. From this time on expansion of the Irish Scotti was assisted in part by the spread of Christianity.

A.D. 700. As the Scottish presence in Britain grew, so did that of the Angles and Saxons, many the descendants of Roman mercenaries. Angle settlements expanded south and east of Scottish territory.

A.D. 800. As both Angle and Scottish communities grew, small Norse settlements began to appear in the islands of Orkney and the Outer Hebrides.

A.D. 900. Competition from the Norse and Angles probably contributed to the unification of Scots and Picts into a single kingdom in 844. Pictish language and culture disappeared. Norse raids forced the abandonment of Iona by 878.

A.D. 1000. By 1,000 years ago the Picts were a memory and the united kingdom of Scotland was caught between Germanic Norse and Angle settlers.

Recorded as Keating, Keeting and sometimes McKeating, this is an Anglo-Irish surname, but despite the occasional use of the Gaelic or Celtic Mac or Mc, is one of English medieval origins. According to the late Edward MacLysaght, the foremost authority on Irish surnames, (quote) "This great family entered Ireland with the Anglo Norman invasions of 1169-1170,

If they would have written "No Paki's" then they would have been sued into national bankruptcy by all sorts of pro-multiculti, civil rights associations, anti-"racist" groups and various other groups that would have felt "offended".

His problem wasn't even that they're bad or lazy workers. Just that they claim to be experienced in order to get work, when in fact they don't know how to perform the job. If that happened often enough, I can understand this guy's frustration. But the Irish contributed a lot to the development of Australia and constitute a major part of its ethnic composition, so it's definitely disrespectful to a lot of Australians with Irish heritage. He should have just turned away any Irish who responded to the ad and not drawn so much attention to himself.

Also, I'm not sure what the original poster wanted to accomplish by including that timeline and analysis of the name Keating.

The modern Irish have a fair amount of Viking and English heritage, even if they are still mostly Celtic or indigenous British, so it's pointless trying to say they're inferior to other peoples who co-habited with them in the British Isles. They're all somehow related. Anyway, most English people have pre-Germanic heritage (i.e. indigenous British/Celtic). Historically the British were a more successful folk than, for instance, Dutch, Germans, or Scandinavians. If anything, Celtic ancestry might have contributed to the greatness of the British, as they certainly had an edge over more 'pure' Germanics in terms of the success of their nation and empire.

The term Anglo-Saxon is used by some historians to designate the Germanic tribes

Aye I know, I suppose we just differ in terms of ethnic designation. Pardon my Anglosphere bias :)...

Anglo-Celtic is a term used to describe people of British and Irish descent. The term today is mainly used outside of Britain and Ireland, particularly in Australia but also in Canada, New Zealand and the United States, where a significant diaspora is located.

The term is a combination of the combining form Anglo- and the adjective Celtic. Anglo-, meaning English and ... or British and ..., is derived from the Angles, a Germanic people that settled in Britain (mainly England) in the middle of the first millennium. The name England (Old English: Engla land or Ængla land) originates from these people. Celtic, in this context, refers to the people of Ireland, Scotland, Wales and Cornwall, the Celtic nations of the British Isles.

Recorded usage dates as far back to at least the mid-19th century. A newspaper of the name, The Anglo-Celt (pronounced in this case as 'Anglo-Selt'), was founded in County Cavan in Ireland in 1846. In a 1869 publication, the term was contrasted with Anglo-Saxon as a more appropriate term for people of British and Irish descent worldwide:

"Anglo-Saxon," as applied to the modern British people, and Britannic race, I believe every impartial scholar will agree with me in thinking a gross misnomer. For if it can be shown that there is a large Celtic element even in the population of England itself, still more unquestionable is this, not only with regard to the populations the British Isles generally, but also with reference to the English-speaking peoples of America and Australasia. Even the English are rather Anglo-Celts than Anglo Saxons; and still more certainly is Anglo-Celtic a more accurate term than Anglo-Saxon, not only for that British nationality which includes the Scots, the Irish and the Welsh; but also for that Britannic race, chief elements in the formation of which have been Welsh, Scottish, and Irish immigrants.
