I love seafood and have tried all kinds of fish, and the other day I tried tilapia for the first time and I can say it has an interesting taste.. kind of like catfish but very, for lack of a better term, earthy and muddy tasting (which catfish sometimes has this taste, too).

It is one of the most farm-bred fish and has increased in popularity due to that it is cheap to buy. Do you like its taste?

Yes. Very much so in fact. Whenever i go out to a sea food place i always order some of this. I think the muddy taste adds to the flavor.

Catfish and tilapia are bottom-feeders and eat algae so I think that contributes to the taste.

I don't like the flavor. It's rather dull and has a strange after taste. Maybe it requires a certain marinade or sauce for me to tolerate the flavor.

I love Tilapia, actually I was surprised when I found it on the menu of some restaurant in Vegas (remember Red?). I thought you couldn't find those in the States lol.

I love the taste more than anything...a great alternative to red meat and a great source of protein.

Tilapia is used in large-scale fish farming and aquaponics. In aquaponics the leftover plant matter feeds the fish and the NPK nutrients in the water feed the plants (vegetables). Where the ammonia (harmful to plants and found in piss and fish tanks) goes I don't know, I suppose it evaporates before it gets to the plants.

Anyway, a lot of preachers like to say that these are the fish we'll all be eating in the future and maybe some of the only meat we'll be eating. They say this because human populations are rising and it takes 3 times the amount of arable crops to feed livestock when compared to feeding humans the arable crops directly. The rising demand for meat in China will mean we all become vegetarians or at least eat less meat apparently.
People who think in terms of the whole earth like this miss the fact that humans are inherently selfish and that European would just stop exporting meat if they couldn't afford to buy it themselves.

Personally I don't like this one size fits all approach neither. Depending on one species of fish is a stupid idea, we'd be better to breed fish suitable for our own environments and different species to cater for different tastes.
Freshwater fish farming isn't new, it was performed through Europe in the Middle Ages. It was just largely forgotten.

There's a few species of Tilapia found across the Middle East and Africa, "Tilapia" is just a grouping.
The most commonly farmed species are Redbelly Tillapia of the Sea of Galilee and Nile Tillapia.

I like tilapia fine. Is there supposed to be something wrong with it?

Not really, but scientists say it is worse than bacon for you. Also add to that the fact that they sometimes will feed on the faeces of other fish.

I do like tilapia, but I was raised on this, as my mom prefers this fish. I didn't know it was the cheapest of fish, but maybe that's why she always bought it.
