Intonation wise it's like Georgian. Then the big difference is words ending with consonants that are very common unlike in Georgian. So I would say that it sounds grumpier compared to Georgian.

Thanks.

Well, to a person like me who had never heard Armenian before, it sounds nicely, like a mixture of Greek (mainly phonetically) and a Slavic language (mainly in intonation and in some phonemes), only that I can't understand one single word.

Spit it out Hess, as I respect you for being conscious anti-turkish preservationist I can take some small amouths of shit-talking ;) :D

But seriously personally I think the old Iranian(new one is pretty Arabic influenced) & the Greek are the closest ones.

Thanks.

I think you'are right on Slavic intonations, there's something left from USSR, it was the fashion back then to speak with a little bit Russian intonation, that's why I have posted folk songs as my primary example ;)

Ancient as it gets. Many Armenian words have a clear resemblance to words from the Akkadian, Aramaic, Arabic, Hittite and Hurrian languages. I wouldn't be surprised if it sounds like the ancient Babylonian language(of course nobody knows how exactly this language sounded):coffee:I had a classmate who was 1/2 Armenian. His grandmother taught him how to say.. This is the very first time I hear Armenian being spoken or sung. I gotta say I was hoping for it to sound similar to either Greek or Farsi(I really like Farsi btw how related are they?) but it doesn't sound like either, it doesn't sound like anything I've ever heard, almost alien to me.

I do not know how Albanian sounds (never saw even a single Albanian in live) but as for Persian perhaps it makes sense. I met people who lived for a while in Armenia (Russians, Americans etc) and learned to speak Armenian but only people who managed to learn to speak Armenian without any accent (shockingly and indistinguishably from natives!) were exactly Persians.

Anyway, Armenian sounds like Turkish without the vowel harmony and the rounded front vowels. Maybe Persian and Kurdish are closer in sound but I'm not very familiar with those languages.

I am Armenian, and I know Turkish too. I can see why Armenian would sound without harmony to someone who's native language is Turkish. Turkish has a grammar phenomenon called vowel harmony and it is the integral and the core part of Turkish language. Armenian has no such thing. Because rest of the phonetics is almost the same (plus all the extra sounds that Turkish doesn't have) to turkish it will sounds like incorrectly harmonized Turkish collection of sounds. So i can imagine Armenian will sounds to Turkish native pretty much like how Georgian sounds to Armenian native speaker

Our language (Poem by Hamo Sahian)

Our language is our conscience,
Holy bread at our table,
The fair call of our soul,
And the taste of our mouth.

Our language is the smoke of our home,
Our weight in this world,
It is the salt of our identity,
The mystery of our essence.

Our language is our blood,
More precious than blood,
Our fragrance and color,
Our language is what we are.

(chorus)

It shall be our first
And last love,
What else we have in the world
To be so much ours.

By the way from what I've seen Persians are the only people on earth who can learn to speak Armenian without even a slightest accent. That always surprised me very much, because for comparison no matter how long American or Russian live in Armenia and how hard he tries to learn Armenian, you always hear a strong accent.

Pasadena schools to offer Armenian dual language program next year

Pasadena Unified will offer a new Armenian dual language immersion program for high school students in the 2020-2021 school year, according to a news release from the district.

Dual immersion programs aim for biliteracy by immersing students in both languages as they’re taught multiple subjects. Proponents say Pasadena Unified’s offering of Armenian is the first for that language in the United States.

April 6 marks the start of registration for the program, which will be offered at the Blair School , where the district houses its International Baccalaureate classes.

The program will offer four levels of Armenian language classes, subject to minimum student enrollment. As it expands, the district plans to offer courses in Armenian literature, history and culture.

It will be limited to 250 students in its first year, the Friday news release says, and if it does not meet enrollment projections, the course offerings are subject to change.

Growing up in the San Francisco Bay Area, there were vacations to see my Armenian Relatives in Fresno, California (about 4 or 5 times yearly. My mom, grandparents, aunts and uncles enjoyed countless marathons of conversations, in the Armenian Language. So, I was comfortable and familiar with household conversations in Armenian, as soon as I learned to walk.

The Fresno Armenians (around me) used Western Armenian Dialects, which is used less and less (over time), because Armenians in Armenia prefer to use Eastern Armenian Dialects. My mom spoke Armenian fluently, and I saw her use it very well, when the two of us went to Armenia together. But, they didn't sound like the youthful students in this video. Those Fresno Armenians paused longer (with cadences) to take deeper breaths between sentences, and their conversations had a melodically drifting sound, not the drumrolls that we hear here.

This one is from 2012. News Anchors report (in detail) about a decisive Armenian Victory, during the Karabakh War (1988-1994). They give detailed information about an impressive Armenian Victory, in July, 1993, at the Battle of Aghdam.

The flow of her sentences isn't the sound I remember, from my visits to relatives in Fresno, California. We'd speak slower, with longer cadences between sentences, and take breaths that would give it more of a melodic sound, and less of the rapidly spoken drumrolls.

In the videos below it is provided helpful clarifications on some of the nuances of pronunciation of Armenian language.

The matter is that in Armenian language there are many sounds that, for example, foreigners can perceive by ear as the same, meanwhile these sounds are actually different, denoted by different letters, and if these sounds are misused, you can get a completely different word than the one you wanted to say. :)

I wonder how it sounds semitic?? We do have the kh sound like arabic word khalas - enough.

Slavic- we usually add laters to the end of words such as "ov" which means with.

East asian- have no idea. Dont think it sounds nasally at all. Farsi is way more nasally.

I wonder how it sounds semitic?? We do have the kh sound like arabic word khalas - enough.

Slavic- we usually add laters to the end of words such as "ov" which means with.

East asian- have no idea. Dont think it sounds nasally at all. Farsi is way more nasally.

Dunno, that's just my impression. BTW you have a 'kh' - 'Խ' letter, but dunno, maybe it's Eastern Armenian trait. Overall, I find this language quite musical, in contrary to my native Polish language. It's an Indo-European language, right? I also got the German, Celtic and French vibes out of that language, I forgot to mention.

Yes the kh letter is there in all dialects. In terms of sounding germanic or french , the armenian language uses the word "du" for you and "es" for is. We also have long words where we combine several words to make a.new one. The popular Rammstein song Du Hast translates as You Thick in Armenian. Hast means thick. Lol. Also we have words like der and prefixes with ant(unt) that may sound germanic.

For french, we use the "j" sound often. The word lavez in french means wash, its LVA in Armeniam or lval depending on conjugation. Yes it is indo European but has its owm branch.

^Arthur Meschian is awesome as well as Ruben Hakhverdian and a girl guitarist named Elena Yerevan.

I think there is some similarity of Armenian to Polish, intonation-wise. Just compare two songs.
