I've noticed the Family Tree DNA offer 12 marker Y-DNA tests for about £65 if you join a surname project, I'am tempted but would prefer the autosomal one. I probably will do the autosomal one eventually, but is it worth testing Y-DNA first?

Y-DNA, MtDNA and autosomal DNA. It's much cheaper than FT DNA and offers pretty much the same things, so I'd suggest you test yourself with 23andMe.

23andme will give you your ydna, mtdna and autosomal results. At family tree dna you have to pay for each separately. If cost is a concern then 23andme, if not then take just the ydna test at familytreedna and do 23andme for the rest.

They test Y-DNA, MtDNA and autosomal. You also may be a distant relation to any of us Brits(or abroad) on this forum. Through Relative Finder.

Not sure how far back 12 marker Y-DNA goes. Don't know how this compares to 23andMe. :confused: Guessing it may be a bit more specific on mtDNA and Ydna than 23andme.

I initially thought I'd go with FTDNA because they looked cheaper and so I wouldn't get shackled into paying a subscription.
Looking at 23andme's website however I saw the prepaid personal kit (https://www.23andme.com/store/cart/) which works out cheaper than the A-DNA testing alone at FTDNA.

So the personal kit does do Y-DNA, MTDNA and ADNA then? At £130 (prepaid personal kit) that XE.com (http://www.xe.com/ucc/convert/?Amount=207.00&From=USD&To=GBP) converted it as it actually seems too good to be true.

I'll probably go with 23andme then.

^23andme is the best choise for 'starters', so I would definitely go for 23andme. You get all of it in one package for quite a good deal (compared to ftdna).

I did the Family Tree Y-DNA 37 markers with additional Deep-Clade-Test.
With only 12 markers I'm not sure they can determine your exact subgroup of your haplogroup.
The Deep-Clade is "for more detailed origins analysis" it says.. so I took it :)
It's also possible to upgrade your tests in the future 67 markers (they call this "experts test").

Anyway, I think 23andme is better to start with, and then you can also get the mtDNA and autosomal in same package. I ordered prepaid personal kit today, $207 + shipping.
It could be interesting to compare with FTDNA results later (they use different methods for analysis).
