Your thoughts on the message it portrays. What does it mean to you? Idealistic? Realistic? Desirable?

EDIT: LOL, I changed my avatar since, it was showing Russian-American friendship :P

Between populations I think it's a lofty but achievable goal, and one worth working toward, but between governments? No, sorry, not while we're locking horns over resources and land. That problem must be resolved in some way first.

On a small scale I think the challenge for someone like myself is learning to understand the Russian sense of humour: I don't trust anyone who lacks one, and I've never been witness to a Russian who has one.

On a larger scale you're looking at a serious problem in mending fences between two nations full of people who grew up under the threat of mutual nuclear destruction and whose societies were diametrically opposed in every meaningful way.

When those of us who remember the bad old days, even the tail end of them, are gone I think there could be plenty of Russian-American friendship.

As an American, my foreign policy is the same as Ron Paul's, and can be summed up in one sentence.

Trade with all nations, alliances with none.

The US seriously needs to end the American military empire that currently exists.

Oh my. You know nothing about Russians!

Some statistics were knocking around on the net a while ago, saying what was what of the proportions of netspace in the various languages. Of English language sites, porn predominated. Of Russian, it was jokes and humour.

Do you seriously imagine that a nation could live through the stuff they've seen and survive without an ability to laugh at it all?

Their jokes don't translate very well, usually being very reliant on their peculiar grammar and syntax, but remind me to post a few some time.

Oh, and Loki, the avatar's pretty gay. :p
Sickly sweet stuff that looks like it's from 1912 or summat. I don't think it's even possible for the USA as presently constituted to be a sincere friend of anyone.

I don't care for what the US does as I am not a US citizen so I'll change the question. Dutch-Russian friendship is that possible ? Well it used to be possible during the 19th century (http://www.theapricity.com/forum/showthread.php?t=3874) (hell we had a Russian queen and we had our own liberation from the French to thank from Allies forces. Russian forces were present in The Hague in 1815) and it were also the Russians that somewhat diplomatically supported the Dutch during the Ten Days Campaign but doing something else would have been hypocritical (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/November_Uprising) so perhaps their stance could also be declared by logic other then any amicable feelings.

The situation is somewhat different now. The Dutch were anti-communist from the start perhaps because of an attempted and failed socialist revolution in 1918 (Troelstra) and only recognized the USSR in 1942. But even now years after the Cold War the climate between our two countries seems to be set in Moscow or Washington rather then in Moscow and The Hague. Putin has proven to be liability- unstable for maintaining any diplomatic relations with (not that our politicians are any different) but Russian-Dutch friendship will be needed although it is perhaps better to avoid any alliances.

We Europeans should work towards resolving old hatred and gestures (mainly from Moscow as they have much to answer for to those living around them) of friendship will be needed. The only reason why we need it so soon is this one: survival.
We can't afford arguments between us because we have a third party involved that seeks our complete and utter annihilation (from Russians, Dutch, Americans or any Europeans (as in Westerners) for that matter). I am of course referring to Islam.

I think it is right on. Appropriate for today and a goal to be strived for...

I think it's a good avatar.

Idealistic vs. Realistic? Hmmm... I'd say optimistic (and both idealistic and realistic to some degree)

I don’t see any listing of your ethnicity or heritage, but supposing you are American and have Russian heritage it would certainly work. Just some thoughts…

Hilarious show, but I bet it just reaffirms you in your misapprehension, Anon!

Between certain sections of the populace in both countries it's more realistic, aye. Let's hope something can be built independent of the governments' intransigence. I especially look to the ethnically aware in all our lands to spearhead this sort of thing.

In case I change the avatar again, the one in question is this:

I was utterly confused as to why people would see US-Russian relations in a viking ship's shadow :p...

Where's the avatar then?

A sinking ship shadow would be more appropriate... :D

If Russians were a good deal humbler and more relaxed, I would like them more.

Why be friends with an aggressive thug with a severe alcohol problem?

Maybe it's because their role model of humility is America. ;)
