View Full Version : Race controversy over ‘The Hunger Games’

Any adaptation from book to movie is bound to rile up fans. The casting of black actors in "The Hunger Games" has spurred some negative tweets -- even though at least two are true to Suzanne Collins's 2008 book.
The frenzy has focused on three characters in particular: Rue (Amandla Sternberg) and Thresh (Dayo Okeniyi), the child tributes from District 11, as well as Cinna (Lenny Kravitz), the stylist assigned to Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence), the movie's archer-heroine. In a curious twist of reading comprehension failure and racism, a few tweets have made the public rounds:

If whites want to see movies based on black characters, they'll read crap from Donald Goines or Iceberg Slim.

I haven't read The Hunger Games, but unfortunately it's hardly surprising these days when niggers are shoehorned into roles that were never intended for them.

Season 2 of A Game of Thrones (from whence my screen name and avatar are derived ;)) is set to feature black actors playing characters like Salladhor Saan and Xaro Xhoan Daxos, who were demonstrably not black in the books.

The absurd thing, as least insofar as AGoT is concerned, is that there are genuinely black characters--they aren't numerous, nor especially important, but they do exist. Apparently there just weren't enough of them.

Books and games are marketed to the target demographic most likely to use them. Since blacks aren't so much into reading and computer games...

Though arguably some of the characters in Hunger Games are mixed or dark skinned, especially those in question. :coffee:

There's a reason Chris Rock said if you don't want to be robbed by niggers, hide your money in your books. There's a well-known case of a bookstore in London not being looted when every other store around it was.

Let Chris Rock say it:

Well, they did choose a dark-haired Robb Stark instead of a red-haired one, although I like the actor. :P It sort of emphasized his Tully side, but it's not a big deal. Changing the race is quite significant though, as it messes up with how Martin intended the ethnicities to be.

The Prince of Persia actor was a Semitic(Jew).

Well, if I were a fan of the books and she was clearly depicted there as a pasty girl, I'd definitely be, no matter how sweet the girl is. But I've always been one for accuracy. :)

Anyway, that was not the case in here, it seems.

I absolutely agree that Robb was more obviously redheaded in the books than he is above, but the casting isn't too far off, IMO. Richard Madden has a reddish tint to his hair and (especially) his beard, and he has those strong Northwestern CM features that you see on alot of redheads. Overall, I think he gives off a fairly strong Tully vibe. :)

Honestly, I thought the least accurate casting from Season 1 on a looks-alone basis was for Eddard Stark; but I sure as hell wasn't about to complain about Sean Bean's involvement, who happens to be a marvelous actor.

Its post-apocalyptic story and presence of black characters is not something unrealistic.

Anyway after seeing black guy performing as Norse God Heimdall in ‘Thor’ I’m not expecting to see any realistic characters in Hollywood movies and ready for any absurd.

In grand scheme of things it doesn't even matter. In the movie Thor for example, did the fact that one of Norse God's was depicted by a black man really an issue for you? Did it distract you from the movie and affected how you enjoyed it (assuming you watched it)? It's not like this was a movie depicting an accurate view of the mythology, it's a movie about a super-hero who happens to be loosely based on a Norse God.

The people who really take offense at such things should just stick to the source material. If history told us something, is that most movies based on books suck, or are inferior to their book version. Regardless of casting drama.

Rue and thresh are black in the books. They come from district 11 which is in the deep south. They work all day picking cotton and are beaten horribly and kept in by electrical fences. They are practically starving yet all the crops and agriculture goes to the capital.

This book is pretty pro-white actually. Two main white characters from the Appalachia finding love in a horrible situation.

Cinna is the only character that was probably meant to be white that was changed to be black to fit the casting of Lenny Kravitz.

Either way i loved the books and i love the movie. Very good and wholesome :wink

Although i can't understand why people are bitching because whites were cast in the Last Airbender movie. They were supposed to be asian, but that is only a secondary gripe because that fucking M.Night destroyed one of my favorite series of all time with that movie.

That goddamn curry nigger.

Called Wog in Australia.

Wog or Pog is a slang word with a number of meanings, sometimes considered derogatory and, in some instances, offensive when used in relation to ethnicity. The term is essentially used differently within the UK and Australian context: in the United Kingdom, historically it referred to "dark skinned" people and in its modern usage is considered overtly racist and is not used in polite conversation. In Australian English the term is a pejorative for migrants from the Mediterranean, though in recent decades its offensiveness has been defused in certain contexts by common usage in pop-culture produced by the descendants of Mediterranean immigrants.

In Australia, the term was applied to Post World War II migrants from the Southern Europe and occasionally the Balkans. It was used particularly towards the Greek, Maltese, Italian, Iberians (i.e Spaniards and Portugese), Macedonian, Croatian and Serbians as well as non European ethnic groups

If they could find someone younger.

Dayo Okeniyi & Amandla Stenberg don't have brown hair and it doesn't look like they made golden or golden brown eyes for the film.
And the character called Cinna has green eyes and brown hair in the books
Which should have been casted as North Atlantid not really a Congoid.
Lenny Kravitz has black hair and brown eyes and doesn't look like Pierce Brosnan. I think the Cinna cast might have made the bigger controversy.

The movie has connections with Lion's Gate.

Lion's Gate owned by Jon Feltheimer (Jew).
