Do you have any pets? If so, what kind of pet(s)? Feel free to post pictures of them :)!

I have a cat :D!

I would like to have many more pets. Animals are lovely :).

i have cats, my beautiful old border collie in my avatar, plus goats and hens, ducks and geese, although those are food, not really pets...:o
probably the most unusual pet i had was a pig. nope, didn`t eat him either, he died of old age. :D
when i was younger, i had ponies, mainly shetlands (even now they are ideal for me to ride, since i`m just five foot high :D ) but nowadays don`t really have the time to devote to them.

At the minute we have two cats and eight dogs. We've got seven Yorkshire Terriers, they're kind of my mum's pets and I've got a Collie-cross who's an absolute nutter. Cleverest animal I've ever come across. I had a Kerry Blue as well but she died about a month ago.

My mum had a pot bellied big as a pet before, they're cool animals. Ours escaped a couple of times it was murder trying to hunt her back to our place. When I was younger we used to have ducks but as we got more dogs we had to get rid of them because the dogs kept going for them. We had two ponies but but me and my sister outgrew them.

These aren't strictly my pets, since they're at my parents' home and I'm at university in another town for most of the year.

The dinosaur on the left is a young Rhodesian Ridgeback (Rifrug). On the right there's one old Border Collie and also one old whatchamacallit whose mother was a miscegenating bitch.
68

Here's a blurry photo showing the Ridgeback's ridge on his back.
69

And let's not forget piano-cat, the feline member of the family.

We have two dogs and two cats. One Lab/German Shepherd and one Jack Russell/Daschund.

Our cats are brother and sister. The male is a fatty and the female is a slinky princess. Both are pavement specials. :)

He wouldn't tolerate any other animals anyway. He regularly gets into scuffles with other cats and dogs and he's bruised most of the time.

He's also a nerd:

I see from the poll there are more cat owners than dog owners. I`m wondering if it`s true, that there are distinct `cat` and `dog` people, who prefer one over the other. I definately prefer dogs even though I have cats. :)
Or is it because, if you work and are busy, cats are easier to care for than dogs?

I've had a few dogs, a Alsation, Staffies, most recently Amstaffs and one Pitbull. Also grew up on a small farm with other animals, not really pets though. My dogs were all "problem" animals I rehomed.

There are no bad dogs, just bad owners.

Now I only have a cat. I can say I like both. Cats are definately lower maintenance, but don't have as much character and wont guard your house.

I have always wanted a dog, but I never had the chance :(. I'm a cat person, but I love all animals (except perhaps snakes and spiders :D!), and would love to have a dog :).

We have Rip, a Jack Russell registered as "Harcourt Drifter," and a Fox Terrier - also thoroughbred, but unregistered, called "Foxie-5," being my fifth Foxie since 1976.

Rip will be 16 in April and is now only a shadow of his former self, but what can you expect at nearly 112 in human terms? He is old and grey, but still in reasonable health, and no, we will not have him put down unless absolutely necessary. He used to be known as "Bum, balls, belly, bad-tempered biting bedonnerde brak," because for no apparent reason he would suddenly attack Foxie, but all that spunk has now blown out of th window, and he - like his "Daddy" (Mr. G.) likes to spend most of the day sleeping.

Foxie is still farily spunky, will be 15 next month, and he - like his Foxie peers - was an excellent mole-catcher in his day. Also slowed down now, but it was fascinating to watch him as he would sniff the apparently undisturbed section of lawn, then suddenly begin digging furiously and comeup with a mole! And the pair of them are probably THE most spoiled brats this side of Kingdom Come - I always say thatif there IS such a thing as reincarnation, then in my next life I want to come back as a dog in MY household! Fact is, the more I come into contact with humanity, the more I love my dogs.

Would love to also keep a cat or two, but this pair made it QUITE clear - NO CATS ALLOWED ON OUR TURF!!!

Here they were watching Daddy who was working in the garden underneath the nets...

My pets are Mosley, the English bulldog, and Schopenhauer, the basset hound. They'll be joined by a real dog sometime next year. ;)

Pictured in the second picture next to Mosley and Schopenhauer is Pink Monkey, the pink monkey.

Although I'm not sure if he's a pet as much as he is some kind of demonic poltergeist. I first spied him in a tree outside my building, the next day he was on the ground outside the entrance. Over the following days he made his way into the building's lobby, then the elevator, and then the third floor landing. At that point I got the idea and took him home. Rather that than wake up one night and see him floating above my bed.

I'm not sure if there is a thread of this nature - I endeavoured to look for one - but I thought I'd give it a go anyway. All are welcome to post pics of their favourites.

Love the dog! I do love dogs. :) There`s a pic of my ancient Border Collie (being washed, which she only just tolerates) in my avatar. She suffers a bit in cold weather with arthritis but still bounces around like a pup.
I also keep goats, geese, hens and ducks and have a couple of evil cats. All cats are evil imo. They are the true overlords of the world. And they know it...

Tis true though about cats..I once rescued one from an overfriendly dog. My reward? He scratched my eyeball. :( Vicious wee beast.
And my hound Lassie, who loves the entire world, including cats for some daft reason, was out walking the beach with me one day when a nearby cat decided to take offense at her presence and launched itself at her! One stunned hound wearing a splayed cat like a facehugger from Aliens!
Ever since then she runs away from cats...:(

Wouldn't that be perfect - so much more rewarding than our day-to-day grind, don't you think? My girlfriend and myself have toyed around with this idea for a while now. We have also envisaged taking in the injured foxes, hedgehogs etc and nursing them back to health.

We once saved a huge Barn Owl from death a couple of years ago. We were driving from my girlfriend's house late at night and we spotted it sitting in the middle of the road, we slowed down and we noticed that it had a broken wing. It kept looking at us but it didn't move, so with some trepidation we decided to put it into the back of our 4x4, (Luckily we were both wearing gloves as it decided to try to resist our rescue attempts!). We knew of a local animal charity, so immediately we took it there and insisted that if the cost of saving his/her wing was prohibitive and they decide to put it down, that we would both pay to save its life. Anyway, if I remember correctly, 4 months later a local ornithologist/bird handler had phoned to inform us that they were planning to release the bird back into the wild and that if we wanted to witness it, we could. It was amazing, we both had tears in our eyes when we could see the bird flying into the darkness, but the feeling of elation and sadness was something we've never experienced before.

Drawbacks of having lots of beasts around you....
they need care every single day of the year...no sick days off unless you get someone to fill in for you, not even Jul.
Veterinary fees...unless you live out in the wilds like I do, in which case it`s worse, no vet at all here, so I have to be animal doctor and mercy killer when terminal illness strikes...
speaking of which, if you have a tendency to grow very attached to them, they will most likely die before you. With one or two pets, this is bad enough, but if you have a lot of animals and disease, old age or accident strikes, it can feel devastating.
Cost....they need food, medicine, bedding, housing, etc...and if you do have access to a vet, exhorbitant fees. ;)

Benefits...it`s been proven folks with pets tend to live longer, more content lives.
Companionship....to be honest, a lot of the time I prefer the company of my lovely old hound over many folks. ;)
Laughter...my ducks waddling never fails to make me grin. :D My hound trying to look, to visitors, as if I never feed her, likewise. :)
Satisfaction, especially if you take in rescue animals, knowing you`re giving them a better life and the care they lacked otherwise. Even more so if the poor beasts have been abused.
Loyalty..there is nothing, imo, to beat the loyalty a happy hound can give you. An example is my last collie, a placid and friendly beast..except to one particular man who fixed the phone line. To him, Spot snarled and growled and in the end I`d to lock him up til the man fixed the line then left. Turned out the man had a habit of beating and kicking his own dogs....so I trust a dogs instincts implicitly. :)
Love. Mushy as it sounds, my hound loves me, and I love her. And that is worth a great deal. She never criticises me, never complains, or judges me. She`s always there to greet me with an overenthusiastic wagging backside, lopsided grin and her own way of `talking` which is to whine annoyingly til I`ve fussed her to her satsifaction. :D
But there`s been many days I or the the son has struggled to go out to the barns to see to the goats and poultry, despite feeling dreadfully ill.
I think those things must be borne in mind when deciding to have animals. Other than that, I think taking on every single creature I`ve had, even the ones I ate/butchered/tanned, was one of the better things I did. :D

These here were my favorite animals of all time..

I loved Missy so much..when I was a boy we'd run around and around and around my Granny's house..I can still see it in my head..I'd look down while we were running and say.."come on Missy"..I'd get mad at my Momma and hug Missy and say "I Love Missy more than you"..No body told me when she died..I had been away and I was out in the yard calling for her.."Here Missy" She had that hip thing wrong with her that they get, she didn't act like it hurt either, my Granny wouldn't just kill her,..she crawled around for a long time like that..she was tough as they get..

Look at Bigshot under my Granny's ole' timey washing machine..( If only I had one of him trying hump on Missy)
http://i40.tinypic.com/nv8wt4.jpg

I loved that cat too..the mackerel tabby Tiger..He was born there and lived his whole life there and died right there at the edge of that porch..the black one I called Panther..he left and never came back..I guess because Tiger was the dominate kitty..

Later,

http://i490.photobucket.com/albums/rr269/ulfgrimr/cugo4.jpg

He was an excellent guard dog. My uncle came up to our house one time to pick up something and Cugo wouldn't let him out of his truck because he didn't know who he was. He also used to go out at night and howl and bark at the deer. It was always nice to hear him outside guarding at night. :(

When I first bought my plot and my children still nappie crashers I tried a variety of pets.

1. Geese 35 of them, the best watch 'dogs',but they were to anxious eating my lawn to the roots. They had this nasty habit fighting for territory to such an extend that my small dogs could not leave the house and did their poo on the stoep or when there was a chance ate the geese poo. Trimming their wings was a major battle
The problem too were their gosling, 25 at a time. Have you ever seen all geese and gosling in your pool?
I sold the lot.

2. Mountain goats. Well my Danes did not take them for granted. The vet bill was nearing $1000.00 at one stage. These creatures could not be penned in,constantly escaping and we on quad bike herding them back. They kicked my ass a few times, wild as hell. Gave them away.

3. Chinchilla cats, adorable but so difficult to groom. On the plot I had a lot of blackjacks, which you had to remove one by one. The kittens reduced my vet bill. gave the cats away.

4.Bees got stung to often and they made themselves comfortable in the roof, could not sleep from the buzzing.

5.Chickens, what a crap. All you saw them doing on the lawn was eat-poo eat poo, eat poo eggs. At one stage I had about 100,they became food for the Danes and Bouvier. Send them all packing to my neighbour

6. Koi fish. Brilliant fish ,made quite a bit of money. Lost them all due to my gardener putting in to much coarse salt.

7. Dogs-Scotties-Bouviers-Great Danes-Husky-Old English Sheep dogs-Pyrenean Mountain dogs and 1 French Bulldog.
I am left with Scotties-Danes-Bouvier and Husky.

I was offered a Shar Pei pair but those dogs looked so much like me that I became confused.:embarrassed:embarrassed

I grew up on a farm and at one time or another we had, cows, bulls, chickens, turkeys, pigs and at one time we even had a horse. The farmer next to us had some old horses, so we would ride them out in the pastures. We had a bunch of farm cats and one giant mixed Shepard we named "Shep", who lived 17 years with us.

Now I have a dog, a mixed beagle and blue tick hound, some call it a blue tick beagle, and a Manx cat (born without a tail).

I have a black cat and a husky-mix now, before I had a golden retreiver, norwegian forest cat, and a white perser. The perser was not flat in his face, since the person who ran the breeding facility stopped breeding when the cats faces were to be flat, it is hard for those cats to eat, drink and breathe. My cat has had some kittens before, but she is sterilized now.
If I lived on a farm, I would want to have a couple of goats and maybe a wild boar:P

When my mom was small they had cows, dogs, cats, goats and horses on the farm. My great-grandfather got a german shepard from the germans during the war, she was very scared of shooting, so they couldnt use her. So she was retired on a small island on the coast of northern Norway.

I was not allowed a pet as a child as they would have caused my lungs to explode and die horribly. (Ain't asthma a bitch!) My parents even took away my four foot long toy dog because it made me slightly wheezy. :(

My first pet was a Goldfish and then two Guinea pigs. The fish I named after myself, and the two Guinea-pigs were named Lucky and Happy.

The fish died and Lucky caught some rare disease and died, and Happy later died that week of depression, I guess.

I still own Goldfish, and when they aren't getting trapped in ornaments which I have to break them out with hammers, they are fine and don't do much.

I did have a Cat which I got for free, but he ran away and/or got killed.

I also have two children who I swear are Monkeys in disguise.

When I was too busy for owning a cat, I took it to my grandparent's farm. She did exterminate the mice population there. She was there for a few years and one day she went missing. As foxes have killed chickens before, then it is suspected that she was eaten by a fox.

Both my wife and I like dogs, but she's allergic, but not to cats, which is unusual.

She does however, with the aid of antihistamines, work in a program to re-socialize rescued dogs for re-adoption.

Well folks the waiting is over, finally we have Poppy home with us.
She is 8 weeks old.
Poppy is a Staffordshire Bull Terrier bitch, her colour is Brindle, she is pedigree, and has kennel club papers and a cute kennel name, we are not changing it as we did with Brody.
We drove to a village near Bath in the rush hour traffic yesterday, it took us 2 hours to get there, boy was it hot.
Brody has been brilliant with her, and has excepted her as he did with Phoebe, what a pair..:)

Exoskeletons cannot grow so arthropods are forced to molt every so often in order to replace their own exoskeletons with larger ones. Limbs are also regenerated in this fashion in the event of the loss of any.

Yeah I'd rather have a dog or a wolf, or really to be honest a bear would be bad ass. However, penguins aren't mammals and they'd probably make the best pets ever.

Heya;

For those of you who remember, my wife and I adopted a 10 1/2 year old cat, named Teia, back in June whose people had lost their house to foreclosure.

We were told many negatives about her, after we got her. We were unwilling to accept that she was incapable of being a part of our household, instead of being just a "boarder."

http://www.theapricity.com/forum/picture.php?albumid=10&pictureid=963
We were told she neither ate wet food, nor liked the company of other cats. Teia and Hildie take all their meals together now.

http://www.theapricity.com/forum/picture.php?albumid=10&pictureid=964

We were also told that we'd only see her at night and she's shy away from human contact for the most part.

Miss Teia Honey, the older (she'll be 12 in December), mostly feral cat we rescued a year ago June 2nd...her previous people lost their home to foreclosure (and their marriage soon after that).

This is a kitty that we were told didn't like people and hated other cats...

Last night, after supper, she wanted lap time. After a bit of preliminary petting, Teia started grooming my arm. My wife came when I called and got a few pictures; this is the best one.

My family has several pets, I love animals!

I have two dogs of my own, Geisha and Vanya, both females, one is an Irish Terrier, the other Vanya is a Miniature Pinscher (she's the one in my avatar). We found her on the streets... I looked all over to find her owners but no one seemed to be looking for her, which makes me presume she was abandoned. We love each other to death! She is so sweet and super smart. Geisha is a real saint also quite intelligent, I adore her.

I have two dogs and two cats. The tomcat is huge. The male dog is a cross sausage dog/Jack Russell. Now, dogs love smelling bums, so last night, the dog decides he's going to go smell the tomcat's bum. The tomcat was lying on its side, and promptly round-house kicked the dog in the jaw, sending him flying. I'm renaming him chuck. :) :)

The dogs I have got are plenty, but '"Angus' a male scottie is a real bummer.
Forever smelling "Kira"'-a Bouvier- her bum ,her nipples and her mouth.

You must see Angus going bananas over Kira when she is trimmed

She's not mine but she's my favourite horse to ride and the one I rode most often up until a few months ago, because they had her bred to a stallion and she's taken. I'm so excited about the foal she'll be having next year <3

By the way, she's almost blind in one eye 5% of vision left to be exact, and you can see it on the first pic. An accident she had before she came to our barn. As you can see though she is still a very sweet and willing mare, and enjoys jumping :)

My wife and I have rescued numerous abandoned felines from the mean streets. Though our cup of adopted furry friends runneth over due to our endeavors to correct a cruel wrong committed against these living creatures of God, we have and will continue to find good homes for any semi-feral feline that can be enticed with kindness. :)

I will always advocate the importance of spaying/neutering domestic animals to help prevent an abundance of stray/feral populations that inevitably suffer dismal fates.

To help control and alleviate needless suffering, our local community has implemented a catch, sterilize, and release to established colonies program to help humanely control the stray/feral cat population.

Anyhoo, I'll get off the soap box now to display some photos of our indoor only menagerie. ;)

Pepper is a 15 year-old male my older brother brought to us as a starving kitten. This aging peacekeeper among our furry friends suffers from a food fixation due to his past.
http://i918.photobucket.com/albums/ad25/GarethLeeHunter/th_86Pepper.jpg (http://s918.photobucket.com/albums/ad25/GarethLeeHunter/?action=view&current=86Pepper.jpg)

http://i918.photobucket.com/albums/ad25/GarethLeeHunter/th_75Mimi.jpg (http://s918.photobucket.com/albums/ad25/GarethLeeHunter/?action=view&current=75Mimi.jpg)

Bootsie is our male Tuxedo who suffered an aural hematoma that even after medical treatment left his right ear lopped. Plus, the little fellow nearly succumbed to a severe respiratory infection he contracted due to the medical procedure.
http://i918.photobucket.com/albums/ad25/GarethLeeHunter/th_23Bootsie.jpg (http://s918.photobucket.com/albums/ad25/GarethLeeHunter/?action=view&current=23Bootsie.jpg)

Bubbles is the Queen we adopted along with one of the three kittens she had. My older sister adopted her two male kittens.
http://i918.photobucket.com/albums/ad25/GarethLeeHunter/th_46Bubbles.jpg (http://s918.photobucket.com/albums/ad25/GarethLeeHunter/?action=view&current=46Bubbles.jpg)

Bonnie is the female kitten Bubbles had. Even though Bonnie is half-again the size of her mother, she is amazingly gentle, and likes to eat crumbled bits of cheddar cheese.
http://i918.photobucket.com/albums/ad25/GarethLeeHunter/th_4Bonnie.jpg (http://s918.photobucket.com/albums/ad25/GarethLeeHunter/?action=view&current=4Bonnie.jpg)

I have three Shetland sheep dog shelties and used to have a bird. Also have a min doxin.

I also breed freshwater Chichlids from South America and from the freshwater African lakes. Breeding fish affords one the ability to experiment with breeding and spawn distribution to levels truly impossible with any other type of animal. Fish are very species-breed-oriented creatures. One can learn a lot about the visceral and primordial nature of breeding and levels of purity through observing fish during egg laying and spawning times. They immediately kill off all other species in the tank or die trying. This is why I enjoy breeding Chichlids. They are very aggressive fish and do well with the holey aquifer limestone rocks in Texas that maintain a high PH level to which the African Chichlids require.

I, my self, have a English or American short hair cat, his name is Rocco, and he is beautiful! :D My mom has a strawberry blonde kitten, who's name is Ziva (after a character from N.C.I.S) and my step-dad has a pedigree miniature, white, Japanese Spitz and my little brother has a pedigree miniature Dauchshund who has the same markings as a Rottweiler. But he acts like pussy most of the times.

That's cool, I don't really like dogs, but when I was in Turkey there were packs of feral dogs running around, and I so wanted to take one home. They were in ill health and sad looking. :(

My pets:

(I reduced the resolution drastically to save my bandwidth)

http://i1129.photobucket.com/albums/m512/kentynet/Pets.gif
The little Jack Russel is called Tinker or Tinkey because it rhymes with stinky because she wasn't house trained when we got her from the rescue centre. She is now though. ;)
The large cat is Jim who was formerly bigger than Tinkey and loves nothing more than lying in the grass on a warm day sleeping. He's losing weight now because he's getting quite old, he's quite skinny now.
Then there's Lady, the forever hungry Labrador. She does annoy me around meal times because she watches you out of the corner of her eye. The funny thing is she probably eats better than I do, she was fat at one time. :D

There's also Monty, I'll admit he's my favourite. He's a bit dopey and lacking in sense but he's a really nice dog. He loves going long walks through the countryside, chasing wildlife, starring at cows and swimming in streams and lakes.
He seems to prefer the company of males because he'll lie on the sofa next to me or my dad but won't show my mum or sister the same affection.

http://i1129.photobucket.com/albums/m512/kentynet/Monty.gif
Taken a few days ago. Apparently it is coming up to winter, you wouldn't really know with how mild it has been in Britain. Some days are even still T-shirt weather.

All our cats and dogs have always been from rescue centres.

I've had a few other animals in the past as well, we have some ground so we've kept horses, cattle, goats and chickens before, not really as pets but as livestock.

I quite like pigeons too, my dad used to race them but I was never interested in that - it's an old man's sport and rather dull.
He went out of them years ago but he's thinking about getting some more.

In the past I've kept a few strays, one which kept trying to fly into my window when it was shut during a heavy storm and another which I took from a hungry cat.
I find them to be fascinating creatures, really under-rated by people who just see them as fly rats.

Of course though I've seen the not so nice side of them, before me and my dad went and rounded up some doves (the same thing basically) which had abandoned a dovecote, taken residence in a roof and bred in huge numbers. It stank but we caught around 20 each time we went and they sold for a few quid each.

No one knows why pigeons have a homing instinct since they're non-migratory. They descend from Rock Doves which live over much of Eurasia right upto the coastal cliffs in Britain. They've mixed with feral pigeons in most areas.
They're one of the few birds to produce milk for their young too. The male and female will stay together for life and the birds are very adaptable.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/2b/Rock_dove_-_natures_pics.jpg
Feral pigeon

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/e/e2/Dove_house.jpg
There are no actual genetic or biological differences between doves and pigeons. Doves are usually small or white pigeons but can refer to basically any pigeon.

Domestic pigeons aren't always grey neither, they can be brown, white or many different colours.

There are many wild species of pigeons too, here are a few examples:

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/d5/Zenaida_graysoni_1.jpg
Socorro Dove (extinct in the wild due to rats)

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/1/1f/African_Green-Pigeon_%28Treron_calvus%29.jpg
African Green Pigeon

Even the Dodo was a strange type of pigeon.

Columbidae (Pigeons) native to Britain:

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/9/96/Wood_pigeon_front_9l07.JPG
Wood Pigeon - very common in towns, farmland and basically everywhere. They're quite a funny looking bird, they just look quite daft to me.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/9/97/Streptopelia_decaocto%3B_Szczecin%2C_Poland_3.JPG/640px-Streptopelia_decaocto%3B_Szczecin%2C_Poland_3.JPG
Collared Doves - these mysteriously spread over Europe from a foothold in the Balkans in the 1950s, no one is quite sure why. They got to Britain without the help of man so are classified as native. Like with most pigeons the pair together here.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/e/e6/Columba_oenas1.jpg/640px-Columba_oenas1.jpg
There's also the Stock Dove, it looks a bit like a juvenile Wood Pigeon with no white band around its neck. Unlike the Wood Pigeon though it isn't doing so well.

and finally Rock Doves are native and still found on coastal cliffs in some areas of the British Isles. They've largely mixed with their domestic offspring the feral pigeon in much of Europe. All domestic / feral pigeons are descendants from Rock Doves.

I had a dog for 12 years but not anymore. Went through some troubles and had to adopt him through a senior dog rescue (No asshole should give their dog to the pound or animal control. They'll put them to sleep 99% of the time). But today I went into a pet store for no real reason and looked at what toys he might have liked. I've been having dreams about him as well and it's the most depressing feeling when I wake up. Really miss my dog.

Someone brought me a pair of lovebirds before as a present. They were terrible, so noisy and screechy and they chewed like beavers through a wooden nest box.
They're beautiful birds to look at, but that's it. I got to the point where I couldn't stand them screeching all the time so they went to a bird auction and were sold to someone who'd appreciate them better.

I much prefer canaries, zebra finches and pigeons, they're all nice birds with pleasant songs.

I only have the one and he is the most loveable thing in the world. He's not noisy because he doesn't have a mate. He loves cuddling and being stroked. At least only by me. He is very aggressive to other people and even attacks the cat. He thinks he is 8ft tall! I love his attitude.
