Turkey is a country of many different shades of grey. Let's leave it to the Turks to colour the picture for us and show off their country.

I was browsing the pictures in the skyscrapercity website and i saw some cities of Turkey in there. I would like to share some of the pictures to you.

First one is Turkey`s 3rd biggest city, Izmir. It`s the westernmost city of Turkey located in Aegean side, located around the gulf of Izmir. The population of the city is around 3,5 million. Izmir is famous with it`s palm trees and the cafes, bars around the whole gulf with all the tables outside because of hot climate.

I think you should have put more a title like:

Urban life from Western Turkey, since you have shown pictures of from 2 cities that are based in Western part of Turkey.

To make it fair you should also post pictures of 2 different cities from North of Turkey, Central part of Turkey, South part of Turkey as well as 2 cities from Eastern part of Turkey. Otherwise just modify your title according to my suggestion.

My maternal side is from Kayseri and Kayseri belongs to Central Anatolian region.

This is a very useful map in order to see the regions within Turkey:

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/0f/Turkey_Regions.png

You can see also Kayseri in this map:
http://www.maxionline.net/map_turkiye1.gif

Some facts about Kayseri:

Kayseri (pronounced [kajˈseɾi]) is a large and industrialized city in Central Anatolia, Turkey. It is the seat of Kayseri Province. The city of Kayseri, as defined by the boundaries of Kayseri Metropolitan Municipality, is structurally composed of five metropolitan districts, the two core districts of Kocasinan and Melikgazi, and since 2004, also Hacılar, İncesu and Talas.

In conjunction with the addition of new districts and first stage municipalities into the metropolitan area, the city's population, which was 536,000 in 2000, was 845,000 in 2011. Kayseri is located at the foot of the extinct volcano Mount Erciyes that towers 3916 m over the city.

Its inhabitants (Kayserili) are renowned for their alertness, entrepreneurial spirit and a strict understanding regarding the management of economies, the last point having been the subject of more than a few legends in Turkey.wealth of the city itself is a blend of modernity and conservatism.

The city is often cited in the first ranks among Turkey's cities that fit the definition of Anatolian Tigers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anatolian_Tigers).[3]

Etymology

Kayseri was originally called Mazaka or Mazaca by the Hattians.

It was changed to Eusebia after Ariarathes V Eusebes, King of Cappadocia (163–130 BCE). It was changed again by Archelaus (d. 17 CE), last King of Cappadocia (36 BCE–14 CE) and a Roman vassal, to "Caesarea in Cappadocia" (to distinguish it from other cities with the name Caesarea in the Roman Empire) in honour of Caesar Augustus, upon his death in 14 CE.

When the Muslim Arabs arrived, they slightly modified the name into Kaisariyah, and this eventually became Kayseri when the Seljuk Turks took control of the city in circa 1080 CE, remaining as such ever since.

History of Kayseri

The Arab general (and later the first Umayyad Caliph) Muawiyah invaded Cappadocia and took Caesarea from the Byzantines temporarily in 647.[8] The city was called Kaisariyah by the Arabs and later Kayseri[6] when it was captured shortly by the Seljuk sultan Alp Arslan in 1064.

It became one of the most prominent centers of initially the Danishmendids (1074–1178), and later the Anatolian Seljuk Sultanate (1178–1243), until it fell to the Mongols in 1243.

Within the walls lies the greater part of Kayseri rebuilt between the 13th and 16th centuries. The city became Ottoman in the 15th century.
Thus, there were three golden-age periods for Kayseri. The first, dating back to 2000 BCE, was when the city was a trade post between the Assyrians and the Hittites.

The second golden age came during the Roman rule (200 - 300). The third golden age was during the reign of Seljuks (1178–1243), when the city was the second capital of the state.

The 1500-year-old castle, built initially by the Byzantines and expanded by the Seljuks and Ottomans, is still standing in good condition in the central square of the city.

Pre-Turkic Sivas

Excavations at a mound known as Topraktepe indicate Hittite settlement in the area as early as 2600 BC, though little is known of Sivas' history prior to its emergence in the Roman period. In 64 B.C. as part of his reorganization of Asia Minor after the Third Mithridatic War, Pompey the Great founded a city on the site called "Megalopolis". Numismatic evidence suggests that Megalopolis changed its name in the last years of the 1st century B.C. to "Sebasteia" in honor of the emperor Augustus: Σεβάστεια is the feminine form of the usual Greek translation of Augustus. The name "Sivas" is the Turkish version deriving from the name Sebasteia.

Danishmend (Turk) - Seljuk (Turk) - Ilkhanate (Mongol) - Eretna (Uygur/Turk) - Timurid (Chagatai/Turk) - Ottoman (Turk) Era

The city came under the domain of Turkmen Danishmend dynasty after the Battle of Manzikert in 1071. After the death of Danişmend Gazi, Sivas passed to Nizamettin Yağıbasan who won it after a struggle with Danişmend Gazi's successors. In 1174, the city was captured by Seljuk ruler Kilij Arslan II and periodically served as capital of the Seljuk empire along with Konya. Under Seljuk rule, Sivas was an important center of trade along the silk road and site of a citadel, along with mosques and madrasahs (Islamic educational institutions), four of which survive today and one of which houses the Sivas Museum. Then it passed to the Ilkhanids and Eretna

The city was acquired by Ottoman Sultan Bayezid I (1389–1402). In 1398, Tamerlane swept into the area and his forces destroyed the city in 1400, after which it was recaptured by the Ottomans in 1408.[2] Under the Ottomans, Sivas served as the administrative center of the province of Rum until about the late nineteenth century.

traditional Turkish horseback game "cirit" - Sivas

Jereed (also jerreed, jerid, or jerrid; Turkish: Cirit) is a traditional Turkish equestrian team sport played outdoors on horseback in which the objective is to score points by throwing a blunt wooden javelin at opposing team's horsemen. Played by Turkish people in Central Asia as the essential sporting and ceremonial game, it was brought to Anatolia during the westward migration in the beginning of the 11th century. In the Ottoman Empire, the game became very popular and widespread throughout the Ottoman territories.

^Is that spinach or semizotu?
no, it's "madımak otu", (similar looking to spinach)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polygonum_cognatum

Polygonum cognatum, commonly called Madimak (from Turkish madımak) or Indian knotgrass, is an edible (by people of Turkey) weedy creeping perennial herb in the genus Polygonum. It has distinct large leaves (compared with other Polygonums)

Description
Perennial, prostrate or ascending branched herb, 15-30 cm long with a thick stout root stock. Stems prostrate, green like the leaves. Leaves oblong-elliptic, petiolate, often slightly mucronate. Flowers in fascicles in the leaf axils. Perianth pinkish, 4-5 mm, hardening and accrescent in fruit. Nut glossy, included in the perianth[2].

Habitat
Irano-Turanian Region or Iran-Turan Plant Geography Region element, grows between 3000-5600 m on rocky and drier slopes; distribution: Central to Western Asia, Turkey, Caucasia (Georgia), Iran, Afghanistan and Pakistan[3]. The madimak is a weed found in both agricultural and non-agricultural areas.

Cuisine
The madimak is one of the widely known traditional edible plants in Turkey particularly Central Anatolia Region. To be able compensate increasing demand easily and supply the plant to the markets, farmers started cultivating madimak in Central Anatolia[4].

My paternal part is originating from Mersin and yeah let's talk about Mersin :thumb001:

http://fle135-turkiye.pbworks.com/f/mersin_haritas.jpg

History:

In subsequent centuries, the city became a part of many states and civilizations including the Hittites, Assyrians, Persians, Greeks, Seleucids and Lagids.

During the Ancient Greek period, the city bore the name Zephyrion (Greek: Ζεφύριον[4]) and was mentioned by numerous ancient authors.

Apart from its natural harbor and strategic position along the trade routes of southern Anatolia, the city profited from trade in molybdenum (white lead) from the neighbouring mines of Coreyra. Ancient sources attributed the best molybdenum to the city, which also minted its own coins.

... came the Arabs, Egyptian Tulunids, Seljuk Turks, Mongol Empire, Crusaders, Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia, Mamluks, Anatolian beyliks, and finally the city was conquered by the Ottomans from the Ramadanid Principality in 1473 and formally annexed by Selim I in 1517.

Konya is considered as one of the first inhabited areas in the world dating back to the 7th millennium in the Prehistoric Period. Archaeological studies carried out in Çatalhöyük demonstrate that the area was inhabited in that time.

Hittites inhabited at Karahoyuk in the outskirts of the city in the 2nd millennium and called the city Kuwanna.

Then came the Phrygians from the Thracia and the city was named Kowania.

Then Persians, Iskenderuns, Bergamans, Romans and Byzantines governed the city.

During the Roman Times the city was called Iconium and included in the province of Galatia in 25BC. Around 372 AD the city was raised to the status of colony and became the capital of the province of Lycaonia in 372 AD. The Christian saints St. Paul and St. Barnabas visited the city and preached there.

When the Seljuks defeated the Byzantines in the battle of Malazgirt a large part of Anatolia was captured including Iconium. Iconium was renamed to Konya and declared as the capital of the Seljuk Sultanate of Rum in 1076 by the Sultan of Anatolian Seljuks, Suleyman Shah. In 1080 Iznik was declared the capital city but in 1097 Kilic Aslan I, declared once the city of Konya as the capital city. Konya was the capital of Selujks until 1277.

During the Seljuks period the Moslem mystic MEVLANA CELALEDDIN (Jalaluddin) RUMI founded the sect of Whirling Dervishes and established a centre for the teaching of mystic philosophy and Sufi practice.

TThe Ottomans took the city in 1442 and felt under the power of the Sultan Murad II. During the Ottoman period Konya continued with its reputation and enjoyed many years of esteem. After the declination of the Ottoman reign, Konya grew larger and developed rapidly in the new republic era.

Now let's see some random pictures from Konya:

Then came the Phrygians from the Thracia and the city was named Kowania.

Kowania? Sounds very Slavic. More evidence that Thracians were indeed Slavs. ;)

I covered the topic a bit about Thracians being possible Slavs a while ago. It could be the reason why there is no evidence of a Thracian language... because Bulgarian is the language Thracian spoke! It's an interesting hypothesis if you ask me. :P

What are these hollows in the caves called, SometimesYes?

We call them Peri Bacalari (Fairy Chimneys rock formation)

The interesting rock formations, known as "fairy chimneys", have been formed as the result of the erosion of this tufa layer, sculpted by wind and flood water, running down on the slopes of the valleys. Water has found its way through the valleys creating cracks and ruptures in the hard rock. The softer, easily erodable material underneath has been gradually swept away receding the slopes and in this way, conical formations protected with basalt caps have been created.

The fairy chimneys with caps, mainly found in the vicinity of Urgup, have a conical shaped body and a boulder on top of it. The cone is constructed from tufa and volcanic ash, while the cap is of hard, more resistant rock such as lahar or ignimbrite. Various types of fairy chimneys are found in Cappadocia. Among these are those with caps, cones, mushroom like forms, columns and pointed rocks.

Fairy chimneys are generally found in the valleys of the Uchisar- Ürgüp-Avanos triangle, between Urgup and Sahinefendi, around the town of Cat in Nevsehir, in the Sogani valley in Kayseri, and in the village of Selime in Aksaray.

Aksaray is in the Capadocia region, where human habitation can be traced back to 8th century BC. The first settlements were from the Neolithic period, evidence of which can be found from the remains of Asikli Tumulus. Between 2000-3000 BC, it became an important trade center. Various civilizations have since left their mark on Aksaray, which subsequently came under the Hittite, Roman, Byzantine, Selcuklu and Ottoman influences. From the 1st century AD, Christianity began to spread in the Anatolian region with the coming of St. Paul and his disciples.

The population of the city is somewhat 376,000 according to http://tr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aksaray_%28il%29 .

Unfortunately I spent 12 years in this small, conservative and boring city :( But soon I'll move to İstanbul and educate in Koç University with %100 maintenance grant it seems :) I'm waiting for ÖSYM's response...

Anyway,I'll criticise this thread a little bit :P

Except Kalburabastı,none of those dishes are Aksaray's unique ones.

All are general Central Anatolian dishes(and some like Kadınbudu aren't even Central Anatolian IMHO).

Yunus Emre isn't from Aksaray but a not famous Sufi,Yusuf Hakiki Baba is from Aksaray.

Another famous "Aksaraylı" I know are Sadi Somuncuoğlu:

Also porn star Şahin K is from Aksaray/Ortaköy :p

I think people from Niğde are kindest and most educated ones in the region...

I like Niğde more than Konya(where my mom is from) or Aksaray(where I grow up).

Unfortunately I can't.Because of being between cities with better cultures(Konya,Niğde,Kayseri,Ankara etc.) Aksaraylılar generally copy other cities' foods.Only Kalburabastı is unique.

Nice city,nice architecture,nice culture,nice cuisine,nice history but...

Bigot people! :(

Well,my mother's side is from Konya but my mom's dad is "Muhacir" from Selanik.I generally say I'm from Artvin(because of daddy) or Selanik since I don't like Gonyalılar at all...

However,my mom's Goca Gonyalı(they say that to old families of Konya,Konya'nın yerlisi gibi bir şey) grandpa was nothing but a bigot,I think Konya became more conservative later...

History of Nigde (Magida)

Niğde Province for a summary of the history of the region, which goes back a long way. This is rich famland near a number of ancient trade routes, particularly the road from Kayseri (ancient Caesarea) to the Cilician Gates. Settlers throughout history include Hittites, Assyrians, Greeks, Romans, Byzantines and finally Turks from 1166 onwards. In the early Middle Ages, it was known as Magida, and was settled by the remaining inhabitants of nearby Tyana after the latter fell to the Arabs in 708/709. By the early 13th century Niğde was one of the largest cities in Anatolia. After the fall of the Sultanate of Rûm (of which it had been one of the principal cities), Niğde became independent, and, according to Ibn Battuta, ruinous, and did not pass into Ottoman hands till the time of Mehmet II.

More recent immigrants include Turkish people from Bulgaria and other Balkan countries, who were settled here by the Turkish authorities in the 1950s and 60s.

This sort of dogs are very common in this city as far as I know:http://galeri.uludagsozluk.com/29/aksaray-malakli-kopegi_6428_m.jpg

This one is actually a bit more rare, a Turkish mastiff, all mastiff dogs in the world come from these dogs.

Turkey reminds me a little bit of America because of large highways and spread-out city planning... certainly making good use of plentiful open spaces in Anatolia.

Heybeliada, one of the Princes' Islands in the Marmara Sea, in which my father was born and grew up. This place is full of nostalgia and strongly secures its historical heritage, motorized vehicles are not allowed (except ambulances, police cars etc.). The transportation is only made by horse-drawn carriage or bicycles. From what my father told me; the island was highly multicultural; Greeks, Armenians, Jews, Turks have lived side by side. My father told me he dated girls from all ethnicities out there but eventually married a Turk. :D

Offers a description of life in Byzantine Constantinople:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p8mTOatKEVQ

This is the third in our series on the relationship between China and the Roman Empire - in this case the Eastern Roman Empire (Byzantine Empire). Here we have an extract from the Old Book of Tang, the first history compiled of the Tang Dynasty in 945 AD. It is a compilation of earlier annals, dating from the 7th century up until the 10th, which shine light on the Chinese opinion of the Byzantine empire and the various embassies between the two states. Thanks again to the Seattle Silk Road website - a great resource: https://depts.washington.edu/silkroad... İstanbul (Halkalı) - Ankara high-speed train journey via Marmaray Tunnel by TCDD's (Turkish State Railways) HT 65000 (CAF) high-speed train set. Train has 250 km/h maximum operating speed on high-speed line. Total travel time is too much for a high-speed train because of uncompleted sections of high-speed line and speed restrictions in urban areas.

Relaxing Binaural ferry ride from Kadikoy to Karakoy and back while feeding bread to seagulls. This trip was made possible by GoTürkiye. I wanted to capture some cool views of Istanbul as well as show off how cool it is to feed the seagulls as the catch the food in mid air as you throw it. This Ferry ride goes from the Asian side of Istanbul to the European side. I had to make sure that I included the Maidens Tower. I've never done a boat ride video before, but I hope you find the white noise from the boat as well as the sea waves and bird sounds relaxing. Enjoy!

The tram system of Istanbul (İstanbul Tramvayı) is a modern system, which has been built since the 1990s, after disappearing completely for 24 years. Nowadays it is a well-used network, where one line even carries 138.6 million passengers a year.

This video is the 20th episode of the series Urban Transport, with full-on descriptions of various urban public transport networks (mostly in Europe).

Join me on this three dimensional binaural ambience walk in Istanbul, Turkey. In nice weather you'll walk from the metro station to the Grand Bazaar, one of the largest and oldest markets in the world - it covers 61 streets and over 4.000 shops. Along the way you'll percieve the busy street ambience and the calls to prayer in 3D audio. For this soundwalk, the use of headphones is recommended for the best listening experience. This way you get the feeling of really being immersed in the atmosphere. Enjoy!

My personal favourite moments during the walk are at:

02:45
You can hear the tarp banging against the scaffold, the muslim prayers (which are 5 times a day) begin and various people and vehicles passing which results in a really good spatial perception

03:47
Shortly after you get surpassed by two moto drivers and a guy closes a gate really close to the right behind you

09:38
A lot of people surrounding you which results in a dense atmosphere. Some moto drivers try to pass through the group of people

20:40
The ambience is a completely different due to the specific acoustical characteristics from inside the Bazar

27:46
A guy is singing next to your left ear

Süleymaniye Mosque Morning Walk at Sunrise in Istanbul, Turkey. I was lucky enough and got the opportunity to spend a few months traveling the beautiful country of Turkey. The Süleymaniye Mosque is located on the Third Hill of Istanbul, Turkey and one of the most beautiful structures on Earth. It's is one of the most important structures from the Ottoman era. The Süleymaniye Mosque started it's construction in 1550 and ended in 1557.

Süleymaniye Mosque is the largest and most magnificent mosque of the city, built by Mimar Sinan, located in the district of the same name in Istanbul. The most important example of classical Ottoman architecture. Completed in 1557, the mosque has suffered countless earthquakes ever since, but no cracks have formed on one of its walls. Simple but technically rich in terms of decoration ... The mosque was built in accordance with the air flow to clean the oil works inside.

Minarets and domes adorn the silhouette of Istanbul. It fascinates by watching its external and internal aesthetics, exceptionally uniform, eye-catching proportions. Suleymaniye Mosque is an architectural masterpiece. It is a period in which the 16th century Ottoman Empire developed and advanced in every respect. Among the 36 Ottoman Sultans, the longest reigning with 47 years is Suleiman the Magnificent. This famous Sultan had referred to the mosque Koca Mimar Sinan to be built on his behalf. Mimar Sinan, a genius of the architectural world, completed the mosque and the large complex surrounding it between 1550-1557. Mimar Sinan, the founder and developer of the classical period of Turkish art, proved the superiority of his art here. The large complex surrounding the courtyard of the mosque includes schools, a library, a bathhouse, a soup kitchen, a caravanserai, a hospital and shops. It is necessary to be away from the building in order to watch the outer beauty of Süleymaniye. From the Galata Tower or the Galata section of the Golden Horn, this imperial work can be seen with all its majesty. A large dome covers the main space of the mosque, which has four minarets. The main entrance of the mosque is surrounded by porches, with an inner courtyard in the middle. The openness, integrity and measured decoration in the interior strengthens the majestic effect of this place. The height of 53 meters is 26.50 m. The central dome in diameter carries four large pillars called elephant feet. All the elements of the space are in harmony. In terms of static, the balance of the structure is perfect. Earthquakes that shook the city of Istanbul in time did not cause a single crack here. The interior of the dome is a baroque-effect decoration made in the last century.

This film presents Turkey's history and contribution to Western defence and the Atlantic Community.

"Introducing Turkey" is part of a series originally designed as "Know your Allies", and finally titled "the Atlantic Community Series". Its objectives were to familiarise public opinion in each member country with the other Alliance members and to emphasise national contributions to Western culture and political traditions, economic reconstruction and defence in the framework of NATO.

The series was produced between 1954 and 1956 and financed by the US government in the context of the Marshall Plan, with the cooperation of the Information Service of NATO, and distributed by NATO. The films in the Atlantic Community Series received large non-theatrical distribution and, in some cases, were shown in cinemas and on TV.
