I didn't realise they were releasing a Thor film. Can't wait for that to come out.

Waiting for the movie hammer to fall, Thor (http://marvel.com/universe/Thor_%28Thor_Odinson%29) fans? So are we! Verily!

And we're getting so much closer because now we know who Thor will be facing off against and that's Tom Hiddleston as the trickster Loki (http://marvel.com/universe/Loki)!

Marvel Studios announced today Hiddleston has been cast as the villain Loki in the highly anticipated movie "Thor." Kenneth Branagh will direct the film penned by Mark Protosevich and Ashley Miller & Zak Stentz.

Marvel Studios' Kevin Feige will produce the film. The film will be released in the U.S. on May 20, 2011 and distributed by Paramount Pictures.

Marvel Studios expands its film universe with a new type of super hero: "Thor." This epic adventure spans the Marvel Universe; from present day Earth to the realm of Asgard. At the center of the story is The Mighty Thor, a powerful but arrogant warrior whose reckless actions reignite an ancient war. Thor is cast down to Earth and forced to live among humans as punishment. Once here, Thor learns what it takes to be a true hero when the most dangerous villain of his world sends the darkest forces of Asgard to invade Earth.

"Thor" reunites Hiddleston with Branagh, with whom he worked on the London production of Chekhov's "Ivanov." The talented actor and Branagh also starred together in the BBC miniseries "Wallander."

Hiddleston's credits also include "Othello," in which he starred with Chiwetel Ejiofor and Ewan McGregor at the Donmar Warehouse, and he played Winston Churchill's son in HBO's "The Gathering Storm."

In 2008, Hiddleston was nominated twice for the Laurence Olivier Award for Best Newcomer – for his role in Othello" and for his role in "Cymbeline." He won the award for the latter.

In addition to "Thor," Marvel Studios is also scheduled to release a slate of films based on the Marvel characters including "Iron Man 2 (http://marvel.com/movies/Iron_Man.Iron_Man_2)" on May 7, 2010, "The First Avenger: Captain America" on July 22, 2011, and "The Avengers (http://marvel.com/universe/Avengers)" on May 4, 2012.

Norse in Hollywood.

I'm now prepering myself for a wave of spotty teenagers who dont know the first thing about Thor to be walking round calling themselfs heathens and wearing thors hammers around there neck after seeing this.

I'm all for exposure but the big screen is the last thing heathenry needs.

So, gods would be the new superheroes like Batman, Spiderman, Superman...What a disgrace, really...

Okay, it's just the comic book version, as long as Hollywood isn't adapting novels we'll be fine.

To be fair, the Thor comics aren't that bad. I've got a huge crate of them around here somewhere. I'll go see the movie in the theaters, but I won't hope for much.

I agree. But, on the other hand, I'd rather that white American teenagers pretend to be heathens than pretend to be black, which is what they've been doing for the last couple of decades.

Oh great....now you will also know what it feels like when Hollywood pisses on your mythology and History with stupid movies like Troy, Alexander, 300, etc... :D

Alexander was awful. I haven't seen Troy. But how is 300 pissing on Greek mythology and history? It was a good movie and the Spartans were portrayed as brave and skilled warriors.

300 was a comic book parody of History, not a vaguely historical movie. The fact that Spartans were portrayed in a positive way has nothing to do with its accuracy...

I was really not impressed with 300, I expected a whole lot more.

You mean to tell me that the people of Troy never had American accents; Alexander and his closest aides weren't Irish and that the king of Persia wasn't a ten foot tall effeminate with monsters in his army?

All I got from that movie was interesting Greek jokes. Friends say things like:

"Don't kick me into a hole, Will."
"Can you grow a beard like Leonidas?"
"Please shout 'This is Sparta' "

Oh boy, oh boy...:eusa_doh:

The Thor comics are utter and complete crap. If they really want a viking comic movie in Hollywood, base it on Northlanders. IMO one of the best ... oh wait, scrap that ... the only decent ... commercial comics ever about the Vikings. :p

It was based on a graphic novel. It wasn't meant to be completely historically accurate in every way.

Black Hawk Down wasn't completely historically accurate, but it wasn't pissing on America's military.

Well, should things get too bad, I have my alternative lined up.

Though I can't say I find find films based on graphic novels/comic books to be particular cause for concern.

Edit: I did enjoy 300.
