Wien ist vieles auf einmal: wunderbar altmodisch und hochmodern. Welche Metropole hat schon eine Stadtbahn mit Stationen, die welterbewürdig sind und mittlerweile von U-Bahnen angefahren werden. Und da gibt es ja auch noch den neuen Hauptbahnhof, mit dem Wien endlich das heiß ersehnte Drehkreuz für den Eisenbahnverkehr bekam. Wie einst zu Kaisers Zeiten zuckelt die Straßenbahn durch enge Gassen und über dieselben Gleise kurvt „Ulf“, eine Tram, die Maßstäbe setzte. Längst pilgern auch Verkehrsexperten in die Stadt an der Donau. Die Metropole zählt inzwischen mehr Besitzer von Jahreskarten für die „Öffis“ als von Autos. Wien ist vorne dran, weil die Stadt nicht immer gleich auf jeden Zug aufspringt, nicht in Hektik verfällt, sondern es ruhig angehen lässt. Ein Film von Helmut Frei (Folge 913 vom 28.10.2017)

Hallstatt, eponymous site where that famous phenotype was discovered (or something). I visited this place in spring 2015, long before that ever held any significance to me, but I was still able to appreciate how beautiful it was. Shame there were so many Chinese tourists pushing and shoving all over the place, but I'd definitely recommend it to anyone else.

Achensee in Tyrol. The scenery in this photo is so dramatic it could be mistaken for a Norwegian fjord. Beautiful place, when I went there in person it was very cloudy and overcast though - it looks much more beautiful in the sun.

Veel van deze lijntjes rijden met stoom en zijn voorzien van een tandradsysteem en bestaan vaak nog bij de gratie van museumverenigingen. Wij bezoeken de Bregenzerwaldbahn, Ybbstalbahn, Waldviertelbahn, Feistritztalbahn, Murtalbahn, Schneebergbahn, Steyertalbahn, Mariazellerbahn, Achenseebahn en de Zillertalbahn.

The narrow gauge (760 mm) Höllental Railway situated in Lower Austria starts from the (ÖBB) Semmering Railway station of “Payerbach Reichenau” running for approximately 5 kilometres to “Hirschwang” via the attractive market town of “Reichenau an der Rax”. Trains operate from a 550 volt overhead power supply. Opened in 1918 to serve a paper mill, passenger and general goods traffic commenced in 1926. Local commuter traffic was augmented by tourists visiting the Rax Cable Car, also opened in 1926. In the early 60’s the line required substantial investment, leading to post office buses replacing trains in 1963 with goods traffic to the Hirschwang paper mill ceasing in 1982. In 1979 the Austrian Society for Local Railways (ÖGLB) began operating passenger trains for tourists on summer weekends. As the only operator after 1982, ÖGLB assumed responsibly for maintaining the railway, although Payerbach Hirschwang GmbH, is still the legal owner of the line. The railway was constructed between 1848 and 1854 by some 20,000 workers featuring 14 tunnels (among them the 1,431 m summit tunnel), 16 viaducts (several two-storey), along with numerous attractive stone bridges. Our train has to tackle 2.5% gradients and negotiate curves as tight as 190m radius, a real challenge for any train. ühtai has already achieved legendary status in Tirol's local road bike scene and features in many races such as the Tour of Austria. Every year it is also the first of four major climbs which make up the Ötztal Bike Marathon. The ride from Innsbruck to the Ötztal Valley, up to Kühtai and back down through the Sellraintal Valley to Innsbruck is an absolute classic. With 110km of riding and 1,720 vertical metres of ascent it is a challenging route which rewards riders with magnificent views of the Ötztal and Stubai Alps. "Hallstatt is a small town in the district of Gmunden, in the Austrian state of Upper Austria. Situated between the southwestern shore of Hallstätter See and the steep slopes of the Dachstein massif, the town lies in the Salzkammergut region, on the national road linking Salzburg and Graz. Hallstatt is known for its production of salt, dating back to prehistoric times, and gave its name to the Hallstatt culture, the archaeological culture linked to Proto-Celtic and early Celtic people of the Early Iron Age in Europe, c. 800-450 BC. Die Urlaubsreise auf der Schiene erfreut sich nach Jahren auf dem Abstellgleis wieder wachsender Beliebtheit. Zwar hat die Deutsche Bahn bereits 2016 den letzten Nachtzug eingestellt, aber die Österreichischen Bundesbahnen und einige Privatanbieter locken nun auch hierzulande wieder in frisch modernisierten Zügen auf vielen neuen Strecken.

Einer der Hauptverkehrsknotenpunkte im ausgebauten Streckenplan ist Hamburg, das "Tor zur Welt". Von dort geht es über Nacht mit dem Zug unter anderem nach Wien, Zürich und erstmals seit 28 Jahren auch wieder nach Stockholm. Wie kommen die rollenden Hotels bei der Kundschaft an?

Neue Reiselust auf der Schiene: "Die Nordreportage" begleitet Schaffner, Logistiker und Housekeeper während ihrer kräftezehrenden Nachtschicht. Sie müssen sieben Waggons voller Touristen und Businessreisenden bedienen. Erstmals an Bord im Nightjet von Hamburg nach Innsbruck: Milena (29) und ihr Mann Matthias (32) mit ihrer zwei Monate alten Tochter Cleo. Die Familie ist Bahn-Fan, hat kein eigenes Auto und fliegt auch nicht. Milena und Matthias waren mit dem Zug bereits in Spanien, Dänemark, Portugal, Polen, Italien und Frankreich, oft auch per Nachtzug. Wie nehmen sie den Service im modernisierten Zug wahr und welche Herausforderungen lauern auf der Strecke?

Der ÖBB-Nightjet fährt mit bis zu 230 km/h in rund zwölf Stunden von Hamburg bis nach Innsbruck. Die Reisenden haben die Wahl zwischen Sitz-, Liege- oder Schlafwagen, ob im Privatabteil oder gemeinsam mit bis zu fünf weiteren Mitfahrenden. Die Tickets sind heiß begehrt und die Züge oft auf Monate hinaus ausgebucht. Die Fahrt von Hamburg nach Innsbruck kostet pro Person zwischen 30 Euro in der Sparschiene und 270 Euro im eigenen Schlafabteil mit WC und Dusche, inklusivse Frühstück sowie persönlicher Weckservice.

Die Nachtreise auf der Schiene entwickelt sich immer mehr zur klimafreundlichen Alternative zum sogenannten Billigflieger. Laut Umweltbundesamt stößt beispielsweise eine Reise von Hamburg nach Innsbruck im Nachtzug pro Person 50-mal weniger CO2 aus als im Flugzeug und rund 30-mal weniger als im Auto. Die Bahnfahrer umgehen zudem Securitychecks, kilometerlange Staus und die derzeit steigenden Hotelkosten. Sie schätzen das "romantische Reisegefühl auf der Schiene" und fühlen sich häufig auch an ihre Kindheit und Jugend erinnert, zum Beispiel an die Europa-Rundreisen per Interrail-Ticket. Hält das Comeback des Nachtzuges das, was es verspricht?

Wonderful film footage of Vienna, the capital of Austria, well before both World Wars! The original B&W film has been motion-stabilized, slightly speed corrected, enhanced and colorized by means of sophisticated A.I. video software.
The film takes us by tram through the streets of Vienna and shows many of its beautiful buildings. As of today, most of these buildings still exist.

In this film we visit Vienna (officially called "Wien"), the capital of Austria, before or around WW-I. The source of the B&W film states that this was filmed around 1920, but many viewers have now commented that it must be earlier in view of the fashion, uniforms and lack of cars. So the title has now been amended to show "between ca. 1905 and 1915".
The film shows Vienna's beautiful city center with its magnificent buildings, daily life, its characteristic old trams, a floral parade by vintage cars and beautiful horse-drawn carriages, parks and streets as it was over a century ago. At the end of the film we also visit Vienna's famous race course ("Trabfahren") and witness a parade by the local garrison.

This very old film has been motion-stabilized, speed-corrected, restored to best ability, enhanced and colorized. For this purpose, sophisticated modern video software was used, based on Artificial Intelligence. Please note that the original B&W film footage was not of the best quality. The original film is very dark, so we used a special "histogram" filter to retrieve more details. Overall the results are very good but this filter has occasionally caused more artefacts to be visible. So it is a compromise.

This is a very high quality film that shows Austria's capital Vienna (Wien) just after World War II. It consists of raw footage, probably made for a post-war American movie.

Similar to Berlin, Wien was also divided into four zones that were each controlled by the allied forces of the United States, the Soviet Union, the United Kingdom and France. This occupation lasted from 1945 to 1955 after which Austria regained self-control.

This short documentary was made from the Red Army's archive footage on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the liberation of Vienna, the capital of Austria, i.e. in 1955 (which is also the year the Soviet Army left Austria).

It must have been shown in Austria at the time, seeing as it has a German title and German subtitles and all.

This film is the first footage ever recorded of Vienna. The footage was restored and colorized using AI and the ambient sound effects were manually added. The inventors of the cinema camera, the brothers Lumière, recorded this footage in June 1896, when they travelled to Vienna to demonstrate their invention, the Cinématographe.

A baroque palace designed by J.B. Fischer von Erlach. It was situated in Vienna/ Alsergrund and was demolished in 1869.

This palace was built ca. 1729-1732 by architect Josef Emanuel Fischer von Erlach. It was demolished in the 1840s.
In fact, this was the second Althan Palace. Since the early 1690s, another Althan Palace existed, which was built following plans by Josef Emanuel’s father Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach, in the Alsergrund District. This very original building was torn down in 1869.

Driving in Austria from Kötschach to Panzendorf on 11/03/2023, the weather was rainy, then the rain stopped, so I took a video of the drone, then I continued on the road, and the snow started to fall, then it increased to the point that the car skidded (there is no video because the camera was covered in snow) I left the camera indoors (situation Jamil loves video documentation. The Krimml Waterfalls (in German: Krimmler Wasserfälle) are the highest in Austria with a total height of 380 metres (1,247 feet). The falls are on the Krimmler Ache river, located near the village of Krimml in the High Tauern National Park (State of Salzburg)
Krimmler Waterfalls is a tiered waterfall which begins at the top of the Krimmler Ache valley, and plunges downward in three stages. The upper stage has a drop of 140 metres, the middle of 100 metres, and the lowest a drop of 140 metres. The highest point of the waterfall is 1,470 metres above sea level.
