In an innovative approach, genetically modified viruses are used to kill tumor cells as a third pillar in the fight against cancer.

A UK study shows that injected cancer-killing viruses can kill tumor cells while doing no harm to healthy tissues.

The virus is coated with a special polymer which allows it to spread in the bloodstream. Therefore it can get to tumors without being destroyed by the body's immune system.

Cancer weakens the body's local immune system, providing excellent conditions for viruses to reside in the tumor and start replication.

Numerous copies are made in a process which eventually burst the cells and infect the tumor. The whole process is propagated cell by cell and destroys the whole mass of tumor.

New copies are not protected once they leak out, and the body's immune system will mop them up.

The new technique works well in tumors which are resistant to chemotherapy.
