Some important points:

-unlike Lybia, the rebels don't have a stronghold for western powers to supply weapons. Answer: "humanitarian zones" for refugees, real purpose is a safe place to arm rebels.

- Assad is a Shia. As a Shia he has defended the rights of minorities like him. Sunni government will mean another Islamic government like Egypt.

- Being a Shia government, its looks for support from Iran. If a Sunni governmetn comes to power, it will be under the influcne of the west.

- Are the west "concerns" for the Syrian people genuine or is this about power and influence in the middle east? I think the latter.

Assad is always condemed for human rights abuses and Tyranny, and America wants to topple him, but the other Tyrant country in the region, gets american support and a blind eye:

A state security tribunal in Saudi Arabia has sentenced a prominent human rights campaigner to four years in prison, Amnesty International has said.

Maybe its time to bomb Saudi Arabia, they have oil to top it off.
