I saw a show from him recently where he mentioned Gaspar Frutuoso and his book "Saudades da Terra" from 1586. It's about the islands in general, the colonization and everything about them.

The other one is good because it's older. I never read it, but after seeing it being mentioned i felt like reading it to be honest. The professor of the video spoke very well of this book.

In terms of the Azores, this series (http://www.amazon.com/Arquivo-A%C3%A7ores-Volume-Portuguese-Edition/dp/1146041640/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1335147058&sr=8-1)is probably the most important to the islands. If anyone wants to read it, it's here. (http://arquivodigital.uac.pt/yii/arquivodigital/index.php?r=site/page&view=aa)
