The political center of ancient Russia

The year 862. The first year of mentioning Ladoga in the “Notes of the past years”.
These chronicles speak of a highborn Scandinavian prince Ruirik who was invited to Ladoga together with his brothers and his array. In the Novgorod chronicles of the XIII century the reference to Ladoga was missed, it claimed that Ruirik came to Novgorod. Modern scientific data disprove it. The archeological finds evidence that Ladoga is 2-3 centuries older than Novgorod, therefore Ruirik could not pass it by.

Rurik – a Danish feudal lord, who is usually identified in history with Riurik from Jutland, mentioned in western chronicles. His father from Skjeldung clan was outcast from Jutland and got vassalage from Charles the Great; about the year 782 Charles granted him Freesland in his domain. About 800 Ruirik was born. His father and after that his older brother constantly fought with the sovereigns who had taken over Jutland.

“The notes of the past times” tells that Rurik came to Russia with two brothers Syneus and Truvor. Theses names are absent in western chronicles. There’s a theory that names Syneus and Truvor should not be interpreted as proper names but as epithets given them by Rurik himself. In Scandinavian Signiotr means “triumphant” and Thruwar translates like “trustworthy”. In mediaeval legendry a legend about three brothers founding a city was a popular plot. According to “Notes of the past years” after Riurik had come to Russia he settled in Ladoga, Syneus took over Beloozero and Truvor got Izborsk. Most probably the new Prince appointed his relatives to another towns to be his vassals and vicegerents. (G. Vernadsky Ancient Russia. Tver-M., 2000. Pp. 341-344)

Professor A. Kirpichnikov reckons that prince Rurik was invited to Russia along and came to Northwestern lands with his court and his array. Anyhow Ladoga became a political center of ancient Russia not because there was a throne of Varangian or Slavic prince but due to the trade, the crafts, the arts constantly developing in the city , that was an essential link in the general development of the European states.
