"Today Šajkaška is the part of BAčka from the place where the Tisa river flows into the Danube all the way to the KAĆ, and next to Tisa river to Čurug, and *inwards* towars villages Nadalj and Gospođinci.

When ŠAJKAŠKA was formed, the rivers Tisa and Danube were not where they are today, and some of the villages, that are today on dry land, were back then on the river banks and small creeks.

ŠAJKAŠKA was named after special branch of soldiers called ŠAJKAŠI. They were a specific order of Austrian military, who moved in long boats called ŠAJKA. These military units operated on Danube, Tisa and Moriš.

The ŠAJKAŠ REGIMENT, formed as part of the MILITARY FRONTIER region in 1763.

(Military Frontier: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/M... )

At first, the area was populated by Serbs only, who were brave and skilled fighters. They took part in many battles agains the Ottomans.

This military unit was dismantled when the Military Frontier province was abolished in 1873, and today the area is agricultural mostly, but its inhabitants have not forgottern their proud history."

Interesting thing is the name of the villages are the same as ones from which they settled in 17th century from western Serbia. For example Kovilj -Kovilje near Ivanjica and Vilovo-Vilovi Nova Varoš .

Alot also settled in Shumadija,Pomoravlje(Tribalia) from Vojvodina after independence bringing with them the famous Serb folk hat of today, shajkacha.
