Common Riding is an annual event celebrated in Scottish Border towns and in some other places, to commemorate the times of the past when local men risked their lives in order to protect their town and people.

The Hawick Common-Riding is the first and biggest of the Border festivals and celebrates the ancient custom of riding the boundaries of the parish/marches and the capture of an English Flag in 1514.

A broch is an Iron Age drystone hollow-walled structure of a type found only in Scotland. Brochs include some of the most sophisticated examples of drystone architecture ever created, and belong to the classification "complex Atlantic Roundhouse"

There are some 500 brochs scattered across Scotland, especially across the north and west of the country. Built from 200BC-200AD. They combine features of fort, fortified house, and status symbol, and could easily have served different purposes in different places and at different times.

Callanish Stones
Construction of the site took place between 2900 and 2600 BC, though there were possibly earlier buildings before 3000 BC.

The Falkirk Wheel is a rotating boat lift in Scotland. It connects the Forth and Clyde Canal with the Union Canal. The lift opened in 2002.

It takes just 22.5kW to power the electric motors, which consume 1.5kWh of energy in four minutes, roughly the same as boiling eight kettles of water.

The wheel is the only rotating boat lift of its kind in the world, and is regarded as a Scottish engineering landmark.

New Lanark - The village was built from 1785 in a previously inaccessible gorge of the River Clyde a mile south west of Lanark. Here it could take advantage of the tremendous power of the fast flowing river. The village's cotton mills, for much of their life the largest in Scotland, continued to operate for nearly two hundred years until their closure in 1968.

Some of New Lanark's earliest workers were orphans from Glasgow and Edinburgh's poorhouses.

The Highlanders at New Lanark
Many people were leaving the Highland in search of work in the towns and decided to try and encourage them to come to New Lanark. Many of them accepted, and settled in New Lanark. Caithness Row in the village is named after the large number of people who came from that part of Scotland to live in New Lanark.

I know that the Fishing industry is huge to Scotland and most Uk catches are from Scotland's seas. Other than that don't know. Salmon Fishing is big on the mainland.

Ignore that link Elizabeth. Don't know but the website got it from is safe. :)

Hamilton Mausoleum

It was the resting place of the family of the Dukes of Hamilton. Built in the grounds of the now-demolished Hamilton Palace, its high stone vault reputedly gives this building the longest lasting echo of any man-made structure in the world.

"Organised" football was being played in castle courtyards in Scotland more than 500 years ago

The Foot-Ball Club (active 1824–41) of Edinburgh, Scotland, is the first documented club dedicated to football, and the first to describe itself as a football club. The only surviving club rules forbade tripping, but allowed pushing and holding and the picking up of the ball.

The first association game in Scotland in 1868 was between Queens Park and The Thistle. It also lasted two hours but was 20-a-side.

The world's oldest surviving football dates back to 1540 and was found behind panelling in Stirling Castle.

Did the discoverers have scientists X-ray the ball to see if there is anything hidden inside of it?

Calton Hill is great. That's to the point Edinburgh ran out of money. Hense the bulding behind your Husband was never built.

You know why the money ran out after looking over Edinburgh from that point. :)

My Grandad is an expert on Edinburgh, he done the tour buses there after working a few decades at the Balmoral and Caledonian hotels.

Ben Bhraggie dominates and is visible from many parts of east Sutherland.

The 100 foot tall statue which is perched on top is that of George Leveson-Gower first Duke of Sutherland who became notorious through the part he played in the Highland clearances.

Sutherland and his wife remain controversial figures for their role in carrying out the Highland Clearances. Described by some commentators as a form of ethnic cleansing

The Mannie
There have been calls for the statue to be removed or demolished. Graffiti has been sprayed across the plinth several times and the word "monster" was sprayed across it in green paint

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-O1RAEMRazUk/TgXXyZmXIlI/AAAAAAAAAoQ/rsjKsAMQrUM/s1600/sutherland+statue.jpghttp://www.donaldfordimages.com/gallery/ProdImages/Caithness053-1.JPGhttp://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/4/48/Duke_of_Sutherland%27s_Monument_-_geograph.org.uk_-_573545.jpg/493px-Duke_of_Sutherland%27s_Monument_-_geograph.org.uk_-_573545.jpg

The Leveson-Gower family owned extensive lands in Staffordshire, Shropshire and Yorkshire. In 1803 Sutherland also succeeded to the vast estates of his maternal uncle Francis Egerton, 3rd Duke of Bridgewater, which included the Bridgewater Canal and a major art collection including much of the Orleans Collection; both Gower and his uncle had been members of the consortium which brought it to London for dispersal.

According to the will of the Duke of Bridgewater, these passed on the death of the first Duke of Sutherland to his third son Lord Francis Leveson-Gower. This inheritance and his marriage to Elizabeth Sutherland, 19th Countess of Sutherland, who owned most of Sutherland, brought him great wealth.

Sutherland is estimated to have been the wealthiest man of the 19th-century, surpassing even that of Nathan Rothschild. The precise value of his estate at death is unknown, as it was simply classed as 'upper value'. He was described by Charles Greville as a "leviathan of wealth" and "...the richest individual who ever died".

I have to visit Scotland some time in the near future, it's the most fascinating part of the UK for me.

I think Scotland is the most beautiful country in the Isles. The terrain in some of the photos looks just like Norway :)

Imagine going out for a walk one day and discovering this lot buried down a rabbit hole! That’s exactly what happened to Orcadian schoolboy David Linklater in March 1858, when he stumbled upon one of the finest hoards of Viking silver ever found in Britain.

The fabulous Skaill hoard has been loaned to Shetland Museum and Archives for a new exhibition, open until 31 January 2014.

Haha. The weather is not that important. ^^
Scotland has a great culture, beautiful and diverse landscapes, a lot of great castles, etc...
Nonetheless, the end of my trip was quite hot and sunny (early october).
For sure, the more you go to the north, the more it's getting colder. :p

I nearly missed the sun before I had a chance to take the photo, it went down so quickly!

Yeah, it was boiling in Plockton that day- I was very sad my car air con was broken. It was that afternoon I drove on to Skye and swam in the ridiculously warm sea and then barbecued some haggis. :)

It tis. Clouds hitting hills are extremely common. You go down parts like the 'rest and be thankful' down Argyll or other valley areas like up to Skye on a wet day, plenty of burns/waterfalls running down.

Having sunshine is perfect too, lay about some of the Lochs or beaches like you did.

Yes, for camping, sun over rain was definitely preferable! Especially as my tent was a bit lightweight. It was chilly at night as it was. I had to use all my towels as extra blankets, and even a friend's old curtain I randomly happened to have in my car :P

In this video from June 2018, I take a joyride on Caledonian Sleeper's Fort William to London train - the Deerstalker. Next summer, these old trains will be history, as Caledonian Sleeper usher in brand new, class-leading trains on this route. Come with me and enjoy the ride down to London from the Scottish Highlands via the iconic West Highland Line. (Sorry about the weather - nothing is guaranteed in Scotland even in the middle of summer!)

Tour Scotland video of a beautiful morning drive through Glen Quaich in the Scottish Highlands. This is the narrow road from Amulree to Kenmore and Loch Tay. Amulree was at the junction of three major droves. It formed part of the route Highland drovers would use to bring their livestock to the cattle market at Crieff and Falkirk. Amulree parish church contains copies of records of the large number of people who stayed in the area prior to mass emigration, mostly to North Easthope, Canada, in the early 19th Century. The Celtic place name was Ath Maol Ruibhe meaning Maol Rubha's ford.

I love those pics and videos of European countries in the 50s, 60s and 70s.

But very sadly, corrupt/shitty politicians like Merkel, Macron and the likes are working hard to make sure that that that beautiful homogeneity of European countries be a thing of the past.

Back in the 1750s, the old Julian calendar was reformed and the Gregorian calendar was brought in, but the residents of Burghead have continued to celebrate the ‘old Hogmanay’ on the 11th January to this very day with the Burning of the Clavie. The clavie, traditionally a wooden barrel filled with staves, is paraded through the town and up to the top of a local hill where it will burn well in to the next day.

In the far north of Scotland, among the rugged Highlands, is an inlet of the North Sea where half a dozen giant oil rigs are parked. Some have a skeleton crew still on board, others are left rusting. But what are they doing there? I went to the Cromarty Firth to find out..

Found myself at Innotrans 2018, where the new train that will come to the Glasgow Subway in 2020 was on display, and it seemed rude not to make a quick video about it! The trains will be fully wheelchair accessible (using St Enoch and Govan stations), have 4 cars instead of 3, oh and you can look right out of the front of them due to a lack of driver ... Inchmurrin, Scotland
https://www.stylist.co.uk/images/app/uploads/2013/04/18110234/gettyimages-188102004-1120x1120.jpg?w=1200&h=1&fit=max&auto=format%2Ccompress

A 30-minute hop, skip and a ferry ride from Glasgow, Inchmurrin is the largest of Loch Lomond’s islands and offers plenty of water-based activities: from Loch cruises and canoeing, to windsurfing or fishing. Plus, the nearby Inchcallioch Nature Reserve and Balmaha Forest mean there’s stuff to keep landlubbers busy too.

Bute, Scotland
https://www.stylist.co.uk/images/app/uploads/2013/04/18103423/gettyimages-596974499.jpg?w=1200&h=1&fit=max&auto=format%2Ccompress

With five beautiful beaches to choose from (Stravannan Bay is particularly peaceful), it wouldn’t be hard to spend all your time by the sea when visiting Bute. However, accommodating more than 8,000 years of civilisation has brought plenty of man-made sights too: from the gothic splendor of Mount Stuart House to the pretty Ascog Hall Gardens.

Jura, Scotland
https://www.stylist.co.uk/images/app/uploads/2013/04/18104815/gettyimages-949526490-1120x1120.jpg?w=1200&h=1&fit=max&auto=format%2Ccompress

Found off the west coast of Scotland, Jura is one of Scotland’s last unspoilt wilderness islands: more than 5000 deer outnumber its teeny 200 inhabitants. Visit Jura’s ancient landmarks or take a walking tour of the Paps of Jura. Or, why not just enjoy all that peace and quiet with a wee dram of single malt whisky from the local distillery?

Isle of Coll, Scotland
https://www.stylist.co.uk/images/app/uploads/2013/04/18105118/gettyimages-975829252-1120x1120.jpg?w=1200&h=1&fit=max&auto=format%2Ccompress

While the Isle of Coll has plenty to attract – including a surprising number of virtually untouched beaches – the island certainly doesn’t pander to tourists: there are no information points, few road signs and very little mobile phone coverage here. However, if you really want to ‘get away from it all’, Coll is the place for you. Just watch out for the ever-changing weather.

Isle of Tiree, Scotland
https://www.stylist.co.uk/images/app/uploads/2013/04/18105551/gettyimages-651580296.jpg?w=1200&h=1&fit=max&auto=format%2Ccompress

The Isle of Tiree is postively balmy (well, for the Hebrides!) at most times during the year. In fact, it has some of the highest levels of sunshine recorded anywhere in the British Isles, making its fine white-sand beaches a must-visit. Thrill-seekers should take advantage of its consistent Atlantic winds and try surfing, body-boarding or windsurfing.

Isle of Gigha, Scotland
https://www.stylist.co.uk/images/app/uploads/2013/04/18110339/gettyimages-97246215-1120x1120.jpg?w=1200&h=1&fit=max&auto=format%2Ccompress

Known as ‘The Good Isle’ (could that be because it gets higher than average sunshine hours?), Gigha is one of the most beautiful islands in the Hebrides with stunning views, breathtaking sunsets, and a host of birds and wildlife. The flat landscape makes it ideal for walkers and cyclists too.

Isle of Iona, Scotland
https://www.stylist.co.uk/images/app/uploads/2013/04/18110447/gettyimages-531200653-1120x1120.jpg?w=1200&h=1&fit=max&auto=format%2Ccompress

Like so many of the islands in the Hebrides, peaceful Iona is no different in offering a welcome break from the stresses and strains of modern life. It’s steeped in history – Iona is seen as the birthplace of Christianity in Scotland – great for walking, and is home to a collection of handsome and quiet white-sand beaches.

North Uist, Scotland
https://www.stylist.co.uk/images/app/uploads/2013/04/18110733/gettyimages-1050844012-1120x1120.jpg?w=1200&h=1&fit=max&auto=format%2Ccompress

You’re certain to become a bird-spotting expert after a visit to North Uist: the RSPB Balranald nature reserve on the West Coast of the island is bursting with coastal wading and diving birds, while the beautiful small Isle of Vallay on the same coast is a must-visit at low-tide. Otherwise, follow in Prince Charles’ footsteps and explore North Uist’s stunning blend of beaches, scenic landscape and freshwater lochs.

South Uist, Scotland
https://www.stylist.co.uk/images/app/uploads/2013/04/18110908/gettyimages-874395018-1120x1120.jpg?w=1200&h=1&fit=max&auto=format%2Ccompress

With fjordic inlets and bays on the east coast and over 20 miles of beautiful white shell beaches running down the west coast, South Uist is a truly special place. Even on a crisp winter’s day, the Loch Druidibeg Nature reserve is recommended.

Isle of Arran, Scotland
https://www.stylist.co.uk/images/app/uploads/2013/04/18111528/gettyimages-587832110-1120x1120.jpg?w=1200&h=1&fit=max&auto=format%2Ccompress

Sandwiched between Aryshire and Kintyre and located in the Firth of Clyde, the Isle of Arran has often been called Scotland in miniature because of its diverse landscape which takes in rugged rocky mountains, pretty villages, a beautiful coastline and rolling greenery and woodland. Perfect for both relaxed and action-packed breaks.

Isle of Mull, Scotland
https://www.stylist.co.uk/images/app/uploads/2013/04/18111617/gettyimages-909639450-1120x1120.jpg?w=1200&h=1&fit=max&auto=format%2Ccompress

Boasting more than 300 miles of incredible coastline, it’s best to view the Isle of Mull from up on high. Luckily the 966-metre-high Ben More mountain (the highest on the island) offers a spectacular panorama: on a clear day every island in the southern Hebrides is visble. Both Duart Castle and Torosay castle also offer amazing, yet slightly less vertigo-inducing, scenes too.

Luing, Scotland
https://www.stylist.co.uk/images/app/uploads/2013/04/18111953/gettyimages-1097827982-681x681.jpg?w=1200&h=1&fit=max&auto=format%2Ccompress

The Isle of Luing has barely changed over the past two hundred years, so you can expect to find a charming Scottish paradise – weather permitting – complete with white-washed quarriers cottages and an abundance of floral and fauna when you exit the ferry from Oban.

Colonsay, Scotland
https://www.stylist.co.uk/images/app/uploads/2013/04/18114137/gettyimages-685032263-1120x1120.jpg?w=1200&h=1&fit=max&auto=format%2Ccompress

It may take just over two hours from Oban in North Argyll to get to the island of Colonsay, but the ferry trip is definitely one worth making, not least for the beautiful views along the way. Packed with natural beauty – from unspoilt sandy beaches to seal colonies and wooded areas teeming with wildlife – Colonsay is the place to go for rest, relaxation and tranquillity.

Whisky lovers should certainly add a trip to the Isle of Islay (pronounced Eye-La) to their list of must-visit destinations: the nicknamed ‘Queen of the Hebrides’ has eight distilleries from which to try the local tipple. But with a mild climate, beautiful scenery and wildlife and a number of quiet, sandy beaches on offer, you won’t want to be inside for long.

Isle of Eriska, Scotland
https://www.stylist.co.uk/images/app/uploads/2013/04/18114038/gettyimages-690079850-1120x1120.jpg?w=1200&h=1&fit=max&auto=format%2Ccompress

Not to be confused with the western Hebrides island, Eriskay, the Isle of Eriska is a private island located two hours north of Glasgow. Accommodating the five-star Isle of Eriska Hotel & Spa (think plush suites and award-winning food), the 300-acre island sits at the mouth of Loch Creran and nestles into the eastern side of one of the world’s most celebrated rift valleys.

Orkney Islands, Scotland
https://www.stylist.co.uk/images/app/uploads/2013/04/18114431/gettyimages-1074278554-1120x1120.jpg?w=1200&h=1&fit=max&auto=format%2Ccompress

Made up of around 70 small islands off the coast of northern Scotland, the Orkney Islands are a delightful place to visit, not least because of the gently rolling landscape of green fields, heather moorlands and lakes. Highlights include the Neolithic heartland in the West Mainland, Kirkwall Cathedral and the Old Man of Hoy, Britain’s tallest sea stack.

Lismore, Scotland
https://www.stylist.co.uk/images/app/uploads/2013/04/18114522/gettyimages-1035045290-1120x1120.jpg?w=1200&h=1&fit=max&auto=format%2Ccompress

Birdsong, clean air and stunning mountain views: no, you’re not in the Alps, you’re in Lismore. The Argyll island’s natural beauty (it’s surrounded on all sides by mountains, including Ben Neavis and the Glencoe hills), is enough to have you bursting into song.

Eriskay Island
https://www.stylist.co.uk/images/app/uploads/2013/04/18114635/gettyimages-542198496-1120x1120.jpg?w=1200&h=1&fit=max&auto=format%2Ccompress

No trip to the Hebrides would be complete without a trip to Eriskay, now made more accessible by the opening of the causeway from South Uist in 2000. Climb up into the hills for amazing panoramic views of the island (look out for the native Eriskay ponies) and across to Barra, or go for a dip down at Prince’s Beach, where Bonnie Prince Charlie came ashore in Scotland for the first time in 1745.

Kerrera, Scotland
https://www.stylist.co.uk/images/app/uploads/2013/04/18114803/gettyimages-1046053006-1120x1120.jpg?w=1200&h=1&fit=max&auto=format%2Ccompress

It’s a shame that the Isle of Kerrera is so often overlooked: the island is just a short ferry ride from the mainland of Oban and its scenic, low-lying landscape makes it perfect for hiking and exploring on foot (plus, cars are banned for non-residents).

Isle of Rasaay, Scotland
https://www.stylist.co.uk/images/app/uploads/2013/04/18115112/gettyimages-1006629432.jpg?w=1200&h=1&fit=max&auto=format%2Ccompress

Another one of Scotland’s pretty inner Hebridean islands, the Isle of Rasaay is characterised by the unique flat-topped peak known as Dun Caan. It may take all day to leisurely walk the 1,456 feet up and down Dun Caan, but the views make it worth it. For less active visitors, a beach or lakeside stroll, a spot of fresh-water trout fishing or bird-spotting should satisfy.

Isle of Barra, Scotland
https://www.stylist.co.uk/images/app/uploads/2013/04/18115234/gettyimages-167800649-1120x1120.jpg?w=1200&h=1&fit=max&auto=format%2Ccompress

White sandy beaches and beautiful scenery typify the Isles of Barra and Vatersay in the Outer Hebrides. On a lovely sunny day there are few better places to be, and a hike up Heaval hill will be rewarded with unbeatable views of the island’s amazing stretches of wildflower-backed beaches. The picturesque Kisimul Castle, located just offshore at Castlebay, is worth a look, too.

Lewis and Harris, Scotland
https://www.stylist.co.uk/images/app/uploads/2013/04/18115408/gettyimages-675261774-1120x1120.jpg?w=1200&h=1&fit=max&auto=format%2Ccompress

Say hello to the largest island in Scotland. While Harris is famous for its tweed, Lewis is also steeped in history and Gaelic culture – from Lews Castle to the Carloway Broch, which dates back to the Iron Age. There are also plenty of secluded beaches to discover, too.

Isle of Skye, Scotland
https://www.stylist.co.uk/images/app/uploads/2013/04/18115532/gettyimages-977165060-1120x1120.jpg?w=1200&h=1&fit=max&auto=format%2Ccompress

The Isle of Skye has a little something for everyone, from the imposing Cuillin ridge mountain, to white-sand beaches, and pretty bays and inlets. Plus, like so many places in Scotland, there’s an abundance of history: head to Eilean Donan castle on its rocky promontory in Lochalsh, or Armadale or Dunvegan Castle to discover more.

Isle of Rum, Scotland
https://www.stylist.co.uk/images/app/uploads/2013/04/18115853/gettyimages-676777245-1120x1120.jpg?w=1200&h=1&fit=max&auto=format%2Ccompress

Shaped like a rough diamond, the Isle of Rum is a real jewel in the Inner Hebrides crown. It’s got it all: think stunning mountain and coastal scenery, wonderful beaches and the imposing Kinloch Castle. Plus, Rum is famous for its Manx Shearwater bird colony, as well as Golden Eagles, so it’s great for bird-spotting too.

Taransay, Scotland
https://www.stylist.co.uk/images/app/uploads/2013/04/18120055/gettyimages-1134519113-1120x1120.jpg?w=1200&h=1&fit=max&auto=format%2Ccompress

As featured in the BBC reality TV series Castaway, Taransay is one of the most beautiful and least spoilt islands in the Hebrides. It is so beautiful, in fact, that Castaway Ben Fogle even tried to buy it when Taransay was put up for sale a couple of years ago. After getting the ferry from Harris, be sure to explore the island and its idyllic beaches on foot.

Torsa, Scotland
https://www.stylist.co.uk/images/app/uploads/2013/04/18120619/gettyimages-131965175-1120x1120.jpg?w=1200&h=1&fit=max&auto=format%2Ccompress

With the six-bedroomed Torsa House being the only property on the island to rent out, if you’ve ever dreamed about owning your own private idyll then Torsa Island could be for place for you. There’s little to do beyond explore neighbouring bays and islands by motor boat (lessons provided), discover some amazing wildlife or go for long walks in the hills, but if you want a real break, that’s all you’ll want to do.

Isle of Eigg, Scotland
https://www.stylist.co.uk/images/app/uploads/2013/04/18120753/gettyimages-575478497-1120x1120.jpg?w=1200&h=1&fit=max&auto=format%2Ccompress

With a thriving eco-conscious community (the locals clubbed together and bought the island), you can certainly expect something a little different on the Isle of Eigg. Orchid-rich grasslands, lush meadows and loch-studded moors are a haven for a variety of wildlife, while dolphins and Minke whales frequent its surrounding sparkling waters.

Fair Isle, Scotland
https://www.stylist.co.uk/images/app/uploads/2013/04/18124259/gettyimages-1041318978.jpg?w=1200&h=1&fit=max&auto=format%2Ccompress

Last winter you couldn’t move without seeing Fair Isle jumpers everywhere, so what better time to discover the origins of the distinctive knit than now? Beyond woollens, there’s the Fair Isle Bird Observatory where you can watch out for native puffins, razorbills and guillemots, while whales, dolphins and grey seals are regularly spotted close to shore.

St Kilda, Scotland
https://www.stylist.co.uk/images/app/uploads/2013/04/18125727/gettyimages-169968799-996x996.jpg?w=1200&h=1&fit=max&auto=format%2Ccompress

Its last inhabitants may have left back in the Thirties, but the spectacular archipelago of St Kilda, the remotest part of the British Isles, is worth a visit if you can get there. It’s not easy to get to the World Heritage Site, and you can only camp there, so contact National Trust for Scotland for details.

Isle of Canna, Scotland
https://www.stylist.co.uk/images/app/uploads/2013/04/18134234/gettyimages-820949874-1120x1120.jpg?w=1200&h=1&fit=max&auto=format%2Ccompress

With only 12 permanent inhabitants, the Isle of Canna is small to say the least. However, the entire island (except farmland) has been designated a Site of Specific Interest, so there’s stunning views of the countryside, beautiful sandy beaches and rare wildlife a-plenty. And, most importantly, it’s oh-so quiet. Shh!

Tanera Mór, Scotland
https://www.stylist.co.uk/images/app/uploads/2013/04/18134747/gettyimages-961102666-1120x1120.jpg?w=1200&h=1&fit=max&auto=format%2Ccompress

Tanera Mór is the largest and only inhabited island of Scotland’s collection of Summer Isles. This rugged beauty has a wealth of wildlife and history, which stretches back to the Viking times, and is best explored on foot, by boat or by kayak. Breathe in the fresh sea air and enjoy one of the most relaxing places in the UK.

The block was dynamited in 1993 amidst controversy and the death of a spectator. It is mentioned is Pevsner's Notable Buildings of Britain. This film was shown on BBC Scotland's Ex-S strand in 1993. This vitrified fort lies on top a headland which commands extensive views of the Moray Firth. Originally believed to be Ptolemy's 'Ptoroton' and the 'Torffness' of the Orkneyinga Saga it is now known to be of Pictish origin. It encloses 3 hectares and is three times as large as any other fort of the same period in Scotland and is thought to be the oldest Pictish Fort. It was defended on the landward side by three banks and ditches which were destroyed during the creation of the harbour and modern village, their age is therefore uncertain. Six striking carved slabs known as the Burghead Bulls were discovered during excavations. Four of the originals are held locally in Burghead Library and Elgin Museum and one each in the Royal Museum, Edinburgh, and in the British Museum, London. Much of the fort was destroyed during the re-building of the village from 1805-09. The Doorie Hill (see below), which marked the junction of the citadel and the bailey, is the only remaining piece of the southern ramparts. Lengths of the eastern and northern ramparts are also still visible.

The Jacobite, crossing Glenfinnan viaduct

Departing a short distance away from Ben Nevis, the Jacobite encounters some of the UK's most dramatic scenery. As the steam locomotive chugs along the 67km track, mountainous hillsides pierce the skyline and lakes glimmer in the distance. The route’s extension to Mallaig was constructed over a century ago, with the intention to make the remote area more accessible, and it has successfully continued its service to the Scottish Atlantic coast since.

Perhaps the most recognisable part of the journey is the Glenfinnan viaduct, which featured in the Harry Potter film series. Beyond this, the train stops at Britain's westernmost mainland railway station and passes the shortest river in the UK, before arriving at Loch Nevis – the deepest seawater loch in Europe.

Starts and ends: Fort William to Mallaig, Scotland

Duration: 1 hour 25 minutes

Best known for: Featured in the Harry Potter movies

The island of Stronsay in the Orkney's:

There are many stories of strange sea creatures having been washed up on shores all over the world. These discoveries often excite us, because we want to believe that there are long forgotten creatures living in our oceans, or even creatures we haven't even heard of before. But more often than not, science tells us otherwise. The case of the Stronsay Beast, however, after 200 years of research, has an element of mystery about it, even to this day.

The RAF Montrose in Angus, Scotland was the oldest British military air base before it closed in the 1950s. 35 miles northeast of Dundee, Montrose was the site for both training operations for young pilots and all out aerial combat in both the First and Second World Wars between British and German planes. Many men have lost their lives over the skies of Montrose, in the surrounding fields and off Scotland’s east coast. At least one of these lost souls are said to have remained at Montrose for decades, and at one point sightings of a long dead pilot were so common and struck so much fear into some of the pilots stationed here, that the British government was forced to officially recognise the problem. In this two-part series, I take a look at the stories behind the hauntings which span more than 100 years.

In part one I told the tale of a phantom pilot who once wandered the old Montrose Airfield in Angus, Scotland, and I briefly touched upon the life of the pilot it was thought to be. However, There is a second story linked to Montrose. Many believe that the apparition in this story is also Desmond Arthur, but others say that this is a completely separate case.

Welcome to my channel! Here you'll find folklore from across the British isles. This video isn't so much a folklore video as I usually put out, but is an interesting piece of history with a legend attached to it. Ninestane Rig is a Stone Circle found in Liddesdale (Roxburghshire, Scotland) that could date from around 2000 BC. The legend says that the Lord De Soulis, a rumoured necromancer, was executed here by being boiled alive within the circle. He had lived at Hermitage castle with his servant, a redcap goblin. Insider’s Claudia Romeo traveled to Edinburgh, Scotland to meet with James Macsween, a third-generation haggis producer who has turned his grandfather’s butcher shop into one of the most successful haggis companies in the UK. Haggis is spiced meat encased in animal intestines with salt, spices, and a few other ingredients depending on the recipe. Macsween’s haggis is made using lamb lungs, beef fat and a secret mixture of spices from a 67-year-old recipe. Editor's note: Filmed on February 28, 2020.

Local landowner Johnny Noble and marine biologist Andy Lane started the Loch Fyne Oyster Farm in 1978. Since then, they've grown it into a global business. They export internationally to Barbados, South Africa, and Hong Kong, as well as stocking in prestigious London retailers. But what makes these oysters so special? Loch Fyne farms Pacific oysters, which can be found at various locations on the Scottish coast. These oysters are harvested all around the world, including France, Australia, and New Zealand. Pacific oysters constitute 80% of the global oyster trade and were introduced to the UK in 1964 to replace low stocks of the British native oysters. The native variety can be more expensive and rare, but also riskier to consume. The Scottish lochs have unparalleled water quality. And this loch, in particular, is of class A purity at least six months of the year.Safety here is paramount. Loch Fyne monitors the water constantly for toxins, as do the local authorities. To eliminate viruses, each oyster undergoes a series of checks, starting the moment it arrives from the hatchery.

Nearly 30 years ago, Trees for Life Founder, Alan Watson-Featherstone stood in the Universal Hall and in front of 300 people made a life-long commitment to restore the ancient Caledonian Forest. He started with no resources, no knowledge, no access to land, no funds, but his passion and inspiration have carried him forward and now Trees for Life not only helps nature to restore the Scottish Highlands - it also helps people reconnect with their spirit, with hope and with the land. Alan's talk also includes a wide range of his photography illustrating both the damage to the land and the difference our work makes. One of Glasgow's many urban myths:

During the late 1970’s, the inhabitants of Scotland’s largest city were subjected to a series of terrifying encounters with a hideous nocturnal entity, whose incessant twitching and animalistic grunting put the fear of God into those who encountered him. This week, we take a look at the Gurning Man of Glasgow.

Railroads played a critical role for the United Kingdom in the Great War. But the increased burden on the nation's railways had its cost. In the early morning hours of May 22, 1915, a crowded schedule resulted in the 1915 Quintinshill Rail Disaster, the worst railway disaster in British history. Its victims, mostly men of the 1/7 Royal Scots regiment, deserve to be remembered.

Single Malt whisky is one of the most revered spirits in the world. It is exclusively made from barley, which is quite a cheap product. A bottle of The Macallan 1926 60-year-old recently sold for $1,512,000 in auction, marking the largest single sale ever for a bottle. Over the past 50 years, single malts have become increasingly popular. Scottish single malt exports grew by 14.2% in 2017 to reach nearly $1.5 billion.

Glenfiddich distillery in Scotland is the world's largest exporter of single malt. Started in Dufftown in 1886, it ships 1.2 million 9-liter cases each year. Making single malt is a difficult and lengthy process. Barley is ground down and added to spring water. Heated to 64°C, it turns to sugar, dissolving into a fine sweet, tangy liquid called wort. The wort is drained, cooled, and passed into wash-backs. This is heated and condensed in copper wash stills for its first distillation, and a second time in spirit stills. This spirit trickles into the spirit safe, ready for maturation, and then is batched in casks with spring water.

Casks spend years in the warehouse, maturing into a single malt. An aged 30-year maturation can have 30% to 40% of the alcohol evaporated in the barrel, or over 1% each year of the whisky’s life. This is because of "Angel's Share" — the natural evaporation of the liquid into the atmosphere over time. So older whiskies are expensive not because they’re old, but because they are rare. Fashion, and the collector's market, also have something to do with the rise in popularity.

Christie's Director of Wine Tim Tiptree oversaw the sale in 2018 of The Macallan 1926 60-Year-Old, which sold for $1,512,000 to a private buyer. According to Tim, the collector's market will continue to grow. India, China, and Japan, are now main players in the single malt market. Particularly successful is the Yamazaki distillery in Osaka prefecture. Rare whiskies from their collection of single malts now sell for thousands of dollars. We tried a 12 year-old single malt worth $36, and the 50 year-old bottle worth $30,000.

Photograph by Alexander Hutchison (1890). St. Kilda is situated 100 miles west of Scotland's Outer Hebrides. Its inhabitants existed in isolation up until the 1880s when regular summer cruise steamers began to visit the island. Tempted by what they saw of the mainland's wealth, the people of St. Kilda, pictured here in front of one of their traditional straw-covered huts, began to leave in ever increasing numbers. In 1930 the island was finally evacuated.

Aberdeen to Lerwick can be one of the stormiest ferry crossings anywhere in the world - I certainly felt the full force of the sea on this night. Not one to normally feel sea sick, I was in for a rough sailing, but how was it?

Lynx have long been absent from Scottish landscapes, but with the rise of rewilding, momentum is growing for their return. But is there enough space, enough habitat and prey? What would it mean for Scotlands ecology and for its people? In this video we explore these ideas, interviewing key stakeholders to find how the Lynx can return to Scotland.

I must admit until I saw a recent Tom Scott video featuring Hebridean Air Services, I didn't even know about this awesome little airline. But once I did, I just had to book a seat on their bright yellow Britten-Norman BN-2B-26 Islander!

They fly scheduled services out of Oban to the islands of Coll, Islay, Colonsay and Tiree, as well offering sightseeing and charter flights. There is a little hack to get the return flight straight back again like I do in the video. If you'd like to know how, just give me a shout :) They are a great airline to deal with by the way - they even offered me use of the GoPro mount on the planes dashboard (but alas I turned up with the wrong mount)

I took a Friday afternoon scholar flight on Friday 25th June 2021 with 15 minutes on Coll before flying back to Oban. The return flight cost me a grand total of £69.17 and was booked only a couple of weeks in advance. Flight time was under 30 minutes each way. We dropped the school pupils off on the island and then headed back to the mainland.

We had a few days off together and put out the question on the YouTube Community page for ideas of where to go and boy did some incredible suggestions come back! I get the feeling we'll be working through that list forever, but here is episode one :) Many thanks to Tom, John and JSM for the inspiration.

Alicja has never been to Orkney before and I've only been there briefly. We made our choice at the last minute and to be honest more than anything we were following the weather - typically for when you put in for time off work the dark clouds appear, but we did alright!

Please bear in mind, this video was filmed during our holiday, so we weren't really focussed too much on a narrative, so it's more just clips of our time there, but of course I hope you still enjoy what I've been able to pull together in the edit. If nothing else it'll give you an impression of this wonderful group of islands off the northern tip of the mainland.

We travelled by ferry via Northlink's Scrabster - Stromness route. This was the cheapest option for going with the van (which is also our accommodation), but did involve a longggg drive to get to the top of the mainland first! There is a ferry from Aberdeen too, but we couldn't afford it. This ferry journey was around £200 return including van, so that was our only big expense to make the trip.

Music features a little more on this video that I would like, but unfortunately that was down to the fierce wind blowing almost constantly over the islands!

Enjoy the video.

Where did Rudolf Hess stay in Scotland?

Shortly before midnight on 10 May 1941, Hess landed at Floors Farm, by Waterfoot, south of Glasgow, where he was discovered still struggling with his parachute by local ploughman David McLean. Identifying himself as "Hauptmann Alfred Horn", Hess said he had an important message for the Duke of Hamilton.

A stunning video, based on research by the University of Aberdeen, has revealed what one of the earliest known Pictish forts may have looked like.

Archaeologists investigating a substantially eroded sea stack near the site of the ruined Dunnotar Castle, which itself was a later Pictish power centre, uncovered evidence of a third or fourth century promontory fort.

The new video, funded by Historic Environment Scotland, illustrates how the fort may have looked if the sea stack, called Dunnicaer, was still connected to the mainland.
