British scientists are working on a seed vaccine strain of H1N1 which may later be used to mass produce the vaccine.

Researchers at National Institute for Biological Standards and Control (NIBSC), based in Britain's Hertfordshire county, are cultivating the seed stock of virus needed for a swine flu vaccine.

Although this is a crucial step in vaccine production, swine flu vaccines are not expected to be available before the autumn.

Drilling a hole in a hen's egg and injecting a small amount of the virus into each one of them is the first step in the production of the vaccine.

They are then incubated for a few days so that enough virus is produced for the next stage.

Two different techniques are used in vaccine production, both of which trick the immune system into producing antigens against H1N1 virus.

Some 13,000 people in 50 countries have been confirmed as infected with H1N1 flu. It has been estimated that 120 million doses are needed to vaccinate Britons only.

NIBSC, which is a non-departmental public body of the British government, is collaborating with the World Health Organization (WHO) and other international agencies in developing a candidate vaccine virus and associated reagents that are required by the vaccine manufacturing industry to produce swine flu vaccine.
