Northern Territory Police are looking for three men who allegedly raped two European tourists at gunpoint in Alice Springs yesterday.
Police say the Aboriginal men broke into the women's car at about 4:00am on Wednesday.
The women, aged 21 and 28, were sleeping in the vehicle opposite the Alice Springs Convention Centre.
Police say the men, aged in their 20s, held the women hostage for about an hour and sexually assaulted them.
One of the men was armed with a rifle.
Police say the men then stole cigarettes from the women before speeding off in another car.
After the attack, the women waved down a police car near the Heavitree Gap Caravan Park to seek help.
Police say the men are armed and dangerous and are asking the public not to approach them.
They conducted an aerial search for the car yesterday afternoon, but it has not been found.
Commander Michael Murphy says the vehicle was last seen leaving the town and heading towards the McDonnell ranges. He has urged the men to surrender.
"It's very cruel it's very aggressive. It's on two innocent females visiting our country. They're both international tourists aged 21 and 28 from Europe and obviously very traumatised by the event," he said.
"What I urge is all members of the public to please keep their eye out for this vehicle.
"I would urge the people involved in this horrendous incident to surrender themselves to the police station."
Police say they are looking for a green Toyota Ascent sedan with a South Australian registration plate, WXD 617.
