Minister of Information Society and Administration, Ivo Ivanovski met Friday in Helsinki with Nokia's Vice President Erkki Ormala to present to him the investment opportunities offered by Macedonia.

"At a meeting with Nokia officials, the opening of a regional center for mobile application development in Macedonia was formally agreed. It will be the first of its kind in the region with a direct cooperation with the Faculty of Information Sciences and Computer Engineering - FINKI. The opening is planned for early June 2012," the Ministry of Information Society and Administration has announced.

The initiative for opening such center was launched recently by the ministry and the Microsoft local office in Macedonia.

"The cooperation between Nokia and FINKI will enable modern applications for the citizens of Macedonia and the region to be designed. It is of great importance for the local IT industry for closer cooperation with one of the most famous manufacturers of mobile phones," stated the press release.

In the course of his visit to Finland, Ivo Ivanovski also met with the Minister of Public Administration and Local Government, Henna Virkkunen.

This move might help stabilize Nokia which is not in its best shape recently.

Healthy Nokia is good for European balance of trade, so it's a beneficial arrangement for both parties, imo.

I think the new center will be only responsible for the programming of new applications, not a manufacturing center. It seems like Nokia wants a regional office in Macedonia where applications designed for the Balkan market can be created. This is a good thing since this sort of job is high-paying and leans more on the side of advanced information technology jobs. We don't have too many of these type of jobs and if Macedonia can evolve into a technological center in the Balkans that would be nothing but good.
