There's no way I could understand, or defend killing innocent people, but I understand his political views, but one would have to be cold blooded to do what he did, but there are a lot of people capable of committing such a crime, depending on the situation. There were millions of killers and rapists during WW2. Many of them were like us, from normal backgrounds with no prior history of violence.
