A new study finds that Hormone-Replacement therapy (HRT) places menopausal women at an increased risk of dying from lung cancer.

Previous studies had reported that hormones positively influence non-small cell lung cancer -- the most common form of the disease -- as women have higher survival rates and respond better to certain therapies.

The new study, however, represents the latest black mark against HRT-- a menopause treatment whose use has declined after being linked by several notable studies to heart attack, stroke, ovarian and breast cancer.

According to the study presented at a meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the use of HRT in menopausal women increases the risk of contracting lung cancer and is also associated with a 60 percent higher risk of death from lung cancer where the patient has already been diagnosed with the disease.

Among smokers, the use of HRT is reported to be more challenging as they already have an increased risk of developing lung cancer.

Harbor-UCLA Medical Center scientists conclude that female smokers should not take combined estrogen/progestin hormone therapy for menopause symptoms.
