The Power of Art - Rembrandt

Considered one of the greatest painters and printmakers in European art history and the most important in Dutch history. His contributions to art came in a period that historians call the Dutch Golden Age.

Rembrandt's success in his early years was as a portrait painter to the rich denizens of Amsterdam at a time when the city was being transformed from a small nondescript port into the economic capital of the world. His historical and religious paintings also gave him wide acclaim.

Despite being known as a portrait painter Rembrandt used his talent to push the boundaries of painting. This direction made him unpopular in the later years of his career as he shifted from being the talk of the town to becoming adrift in the Amsterdam art scene and criticised by his peers.

The Power of Art - Van Gogh

The Dutch Post-Impressionist master.
Van Gogh spent his early life as an art dealer, teacher and preacher in England, Holland and Belgium. His period as an artist began in 1881 when he chose to study art in Brussels, starting with watercolours and moving quickly on to oils. The French countryside was a major influence on his life and his early work was dominated by sombre, earthy colours depicting peasant workers, the most famous of which is The Potato Eaters, 1885.

It was during Van Gogh's studies in Paris (1886-8) that he developed the individual style of brushwork and use of colour that made his name. In 1888 he moved to Arles where the Provençal landscape provided his best-known subject matter. However, it also marked the start of his mental crisis following an argument with his contemporary Paul Gauguin. Van Gogh was committed to a mental asylum in 1889 where he continued to paint, but he committed suicide in 1890.

Only Dutch/ FLEMISH painters can rival Italians in quality and quantity.. ( Arts = wealth and money )

In Spain there is Velasquez.. and in Germany Albrecht Dürer.... but not many Others..

The Great Artists - Van Gogh (https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x23th7x)

Vincent Willem van Gogh
(30 March 1853 - 29 July 1890) was a Dutch Post-Impressionist artist. Some of his paintings are now among the world's best known, most popular and expensive works of art.

Van Gogh spent his early adult life working for a firm of art dealers. After a brief spell as a teacher, he became a missionary worker in a very poor mining region. He did not embark upon a career as an artist until 1880. Initially, Van Gogh worked only with sombre colours, until he encountered Impressionism and Neo-Impressionism in Paris. He incorporated their brighter colours and style of painting into a uniquely recognizable style, which was fully developed during the time he spent at Arles, France. He produced more than 2,000 works, including around 900 paintings and 1,100 drawings and sketches, during the last ten years of his life. Most of his best-known works were produced in the final two years of his life, during which time he suffered recurrent bouts of mental illness, which led to his suicide.

Willem Claeszoon Heda (1593/1594 – c. 1680/1682) was a Dutch Golden Age artist from the city of Haarlem devoted exclusively to the painting of still lifes.

He is known for his innovation of the late breakfast genre of still life painting.

Balthasar van der Ast (1593/94 – 7 March 1657) was a Dutch Golden Age painter who specialised in still lifes of flowers and fruit, as well as painting a number of remarkable shell still lifes; he is considered to be a pioneer in the genre of shell painting. His still lifes often contain insects and lizards.

He was born in Middelburg and died in Delft.

His lifetime of works was once summarised by an Amsterdam doctor who said, "In flowers, shells and lizards, beautiful".

'The Netherlands brought oil painting to Europe, and renowned Dutch artists run from the Hieronymus Bosch (1400s) through artists like Vermeer, Rembrandt and van Gogh to modern artists and designers like MC Escher and the creator of Miffy.'

A vanitas is a symbolic work of art showing the transience of life, the futility of pleasure, and the certainty of death, often contrasting symbols of wealth and symbols of ephemerality and death. Best-known are vanitas still lifes, a common genre in Netherlandish art of the 16th and 17th centuries; they have also been created at other times and in other media and genres.

Documentary on the materials of Rembrandt

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IH0r9LmL-nM

For years no one knew if it was genuine - but now after eight months of intensive study, experts have declared an obscure portrait to be a genuine Rembrandt. Painted by Rembrandt in 1635, the authenticity of the portrait had previously been thrown into doubt by Rembrandt specialist Horst Gerson and the Rembrandt Research Project in 1968. But after fresh study, using methods not available in the 1960s, another member of the Research Project, Ernst van de Wetering, has declared that it is genuine after all. The painting now hangs in the collection at the National Trust's Buckland Abbey in Devon where visitors can see it for themselves. or find out more at https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/buck... And you can see him in all his glory in a stunning new exhibition at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. It is called "Rembrandt's Journey: Painter, Draftsman, Etcher." Above a long train of Indians is approaching, led by a Dutch trumpeter and banner carriers with Dutch flags, in the middle of the procession two Dutchmen let themselves be carried in a litter. To right of this is an encampment with an Indian dignitary in a tent, horses, cows, elephants and dromedaries. On the right side of the image a graveyard. Bottom right on a stele the marshaled arms of Pieter Sterthemius and Maria Calandrini.

The Golden Age of the book of hours in Europe took place from 1350–1480. The Très Riches Heures du Duc de Berry or Très Riches Heures, (The Very Rich Hours of the Duke of Berry), is the most famous and possibly the best surviving example of French Gothic manuscript illumination, showing the late International Gothic phase of the style. It is a book of hours: a collection of prayers to be said at the canonical hours. It was created between c. 1412 and 1416 for the extravagant royal bibliophile and patron John, Duke of Berry, by the Limbourg brothers. When the three painters and their sponsor died in 1416, possibly victims of plague, the manuscript was left unfinished. It was further embellished in the 1440s by an anonymous painter, who many art historians believe was Barthélemy d'Eyck. In 1485–1489, it was brought to its present state by the painter Jean Colombe on behalf of the Duke of Savoy. Acquired by the Duc d'Aumale in 1856, the book is now MS 65 in the Musée Condé, Chantilly, France. Consisting of a total of 206 leaves of very fine quality parchment, 30 cm (12 in) in height by 21.5 cm (8 1⁄2 in) in width, the manuscript contains 66 large miniatures and 65 small. The design of the book, which is long and complex, has undergone many changes and reversals. Many artists contributed to its miniatures, calligraphy, initials, and marginal decorations, but determining their precise number and identity remains a matter of debate. Painted largely by artists from the Low Countries, often using rare and costly pigments and gold,[3] and with an unusually large number of illustrations, the book is one of the most lavish late medieval illuminated manuscripts. The Limbourg brothers (Dutch: Gebroeders van Limburg; fl. 1385 – 1416) were famous Dutch miniature painters (Herman, Paul, and Johan) from the city of Nijmegen. They were active in the early 15th century in France and Burgundy, working in the style known as International Gothic. They created what is certainly the best-known late medieval illuminated manuscript, the Très Riches Heures du Duc de Berry. After three centuries in obscurity, the Très Riches Heures gained wide recognition in the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries, despite having only very limited public exposure at the Musée Condé. Its miniatures helped to shape an ideal image of the Middle Ages in the collective imagination. This is particularly true for the calendar images, which are the most commonly reproduced. They offer vivid representations of peasants performing agricultural work as well as aristocrats in formal attire, against a background of remarkable medieval architecture. (wikipedia)

No one can agree. She’s the subject of Dutch Master Johannes Vermeer’s "Girl with the Pearl Earring," a painting often referred to as the ‘Mona Lisa of the North.’ But what makes this painting so captivating? James Earle explains how this work represents the birth of a modern perspective on economics, politics, and love. Lesson by James Earle, animation by Tess Martin.

Johannes Vermeer (c. 1632–c. 1675) is one of the most highly regarded Dutch artists of all time. His works have been a source of inspiration and fascination for centuries, but much of his life remains a mystery. Vermeer was a Dutch Baroque Period painter who specialized in domestic interior scenes of middle class life. Vermeer worked slowly and with great care, and frequently used very expensive pigments. He is particularly renowned for his masterly treatment and use of light in his work. Vermeer painted mostly domestic interior scenes. "Almost all his paintings are apparently set in two smallish rooms in his house in Delft; they show the same furniture and decorations in various arrangements and they often portray the same people, mostly women."

List of works: The Allegory of Faith. The Art of Painting. The Astronomer. Christ in the House of Martha and Mary. The Concert. Diana and Her Companions. The Geographer. A Girl Asleep. Girl Interrupted at Her Music. Girl Reading a Letter at an Open Window. Girl with a Flute. Girl with a Pearl Earring. Girl with a Red Hat. The Girl with the Wine Glass. The Guitar Player. Sunflowers (original title, in French: Tournesols) is the name of two series of still life paintings by the Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh. The first series, executed in Paris in 1887, depicts the flowers lying on the ground, while the second set, executed a year later in Arles, shows a bouquet of sunflowers in a vase. (wikipedia)

Pieter Jansz. Saenredam (9 June 1597 - buried 31 May 1665) was a painter of the Dutch Golden Age, known for his distinctive paintings of whitewashed church interiors such as Interior of St Bavo's Church in Haarlem and Interior of the Sint-Odulphuskerk in Assendelft.

Biography
One of the great Old Masters known for his distinctive paintings of whitewashed church interiors, Pieter Jansz Saenredam edges out his younger contemporary Emanuel de Witte (1615-1692) as the greatest architectural painter during the Golden Age of Dutch Baroque Painting (c.1600-80). Active mainly in the city of Haarlem, he was the first artist to produce architecturally faithful depictions of buildings, rather than the more imaginative inventions championed by Mannerism, which had been the dominant style of the late 16th century. In this sense he was one of the purest of Dutch Realist artists, whose down-to-earth Protestant art contrasted with the more dramatic and flamboyant Catholic Counter-Reformation Art (1560-1700). His particular style of Dutch Realism with its focus on architectural truthfulness distinguishes him from de Witte, whose church interiors were sometimes augmented (effectively but fancifully) with elements from other buildings. A master of drawing, Saenredam relied heavily on preparatory sketching to achieve the exactitude of perspective and proportion he sought, and it was this professional approach that made him so influential in Baroque Painting throughout the Low Countries. In his particular brand of Christian art, he achieved what Rembrandt (1606-1669), Jan Vermeer (1632-1675) and Harmen van Steenwyck (1612-56) did for portraiture, genre painting and vanitas still lifes, respectively. Among his best known oil paintings are a matching pair both titled "Interior of the Buurkerk, Utrecht" (1644). One is displayed in the National Gallery, London; the other is part of the collection of the Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth, Texas.

Education and Training
Pieter Jansz Saenredam acquired the rudiments of sketching and painting from his father, an engraver, before being apprenticed at the age of 15 to Frans Pietersz de Grebber (1573-1649), the landscape and portrait specialist. Sadly, although exceptionally talented as an artist, Saenredam suffered both from his short stature and a spinal deformity (he was a dwarf and hunchbacked). In 1622, he joined the Guild of St Luke in Haarlem, and in 1626 produced his first serious example of Biblical art, entitled: "Christ Expelling the Merchants from the Temple".

Career as a Painter
Despite this early experimentation with religious art and his occasional contributions to the school of Dutch Realist genre painting, Saenredam is known chiefly for his paintings of churches. And his knowledge of Baroque architecture gleaned through his friendship with Dutch Baroque architects like Jacob van Campen (1596-1657), Salomon de Bray (1597-1664) and Pieter Post (1608-69), may explain the austerity and severe lines of these works. His fifty-six known paintings are of a mathematical precision, and were usually preceded by elaborate sketches and very accurate drawings, with the perspective projection fully worked out. About 140 of these are known at the present time. (visual-arts-cork)

The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the Netherlands is a huge world-famous collection presented in 80 galleries, exhibiting 8,000 objects that tell the story of 800 years of Dutch art and history. This collection focuses primarily on Dutch paintings of the 16th and 17th centuries, rather than trying to present a complete sample of the entire world of art. The museum has a lot to show, thanks especially to the extreme genius of great native painters, Frans Hals, Vermeer, van Ruisdael, Jan Steen, and most-famously, Rembrandt. Don’t miss out on the absolute highlights, like Vermeer’s Milkmaid, Van Gogh’s Self-portrait and a gorgeous collection of Delft Blue pottery ranging from tea sets to vases.

The total archive includes 1 million objects from the years 1200–2000, with more than 2,000 paintings from the Dutch Golden Age. Some 30 galleries are dedicated to the glory of the Golden Age, when the young mercantile republic led the world in trade, science, shipping and the arts. Many objects from Dutch history tell the story with Paintings, prints, drawings, photographs, silver, porcelain, delftware, furniture, jewellery, costumes and more. There are also dozens of rooms with medieval arts and later decorative pieces of the 19th century, 17th century miniature house models, along with a sampling of minor Italian Renaissance paintings.

The building itself is a major work of art, designed in neo-Gothic and Renaissance styles by Pierre Cuypers, who also designed the similar-looking Central Train Station, both completed in the 1880s. The red terra-cotta façade is adorned with many statues, decorative stripes, reliefs and ceramic plaques, using a mix of medieval and 19th century styles.

Grote namen waren o.a. Henk Wouda, Cor Alons en Jan Wils).

Nederland middeleeuwen
