Moffat is the great-great-granddaughter of the actor-manager and RADA founder Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree. Her great grandfather was the artist, photographer and designer Curtis Moffat, and her great grandmother was the actress and poet Iris Tree.[4][9] Her grandfather was the screenwriter and producer Ivan Moffat.[1][4]
Her paternal grandmother was the hon. Katharine Smith, who was married to Ivan Moffat from 1961 to 1972.[10][11] Katharine Smith was the daughter of businessman William Henry Smith, 3rd Viscount Hambleden (of the W H Smith family), and his wife Patricia (daughter of the 15th Earl of Pembroke and lady-in-waiting to Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother).[12][11] Through the Pembroke family, Moffat descends from Countess Catherine Vorontsov, sister of Prince Mikhail Semyonovich Vorontsov, Viceroy of New Russia and Caucasus.[13]
Moffat's maternal grandfather is Laurie Sawle, a former Australian cricketer and chairman of selectors for the Australian national cricket team
