Marco Doria, elected major of Genoa yesterday, is a descendent of the ancient noble house of Doria, that ruled the Republic of Genoa several times during the Middle Ages and the Early Modern Period. His ancestor Andrea (lived in the Carl V age, 16th century) was titled "pater patriae" of Genoa (father of the homeland). A huge statue of his was destroyed during the revolutionary uprising of 1797.
