Zagreb, Croatia is a city with a rich history, dating from Roman times to the present day. The oldest settlement in the urban area of the city is Andautonia, a Roman settlement in the place of today's Šćitarjevo. The name "Zagreb" is mentioned for the first time in 1094 at the founding of the Zagreb diocese of Kaptol, and Zagreb becomes a free royal town in 1242. In 1851 Zagreb had its first mayor, Janko Kamauf, and in 1945 it was made the capital of Croatia. According to the 2001 Croatian census Zagreb has 779,145 inhabitants and is the biggest city of Croatia by area and population.

Zagreb Cathedral on Kaptol is the most famous building in Zagreb. It is dedicated to the Assumption of Mary and to kings Saint Stephen and Saint Ladislaus. The cathedral is typically Gothic, as is its sacristy, which is of great architectonic value. Its spires can be seen from many locations in the city.

The building of the cathedral started in the 11th century (1093), although the building was razed to the ground by the Tatars in 1242. At the end of the 15th century, the Ottoman Empire invaded Bosnia and Croatia, triggering the construction of fortification walls around the cathedral. Some of these fortifications are still intact. In the 17th century, a fortified renaissance watchtower was erected on the south side, and was used as a military observation point, because of the Ottoman threat.
In 1880, the cathedral was severely damaged in an earthquake. The main nave collapsed and the tower was damaged beyond repair. The restoration of the cathedral in the neo-gothic style was made by Hermann Bollé, bringing the cathedral to its present form. As part of that restoration, two spires of 108 m (354 ft) height were raised on the western side, both of which are now in the process of being restored during a massive general restoration of the cathedral.
The cathedral is depicted on the reverse of the Croatian 1000 kuna banknote issued in 1993.
The building is, by its horizontal view when facing the portal, 46 meters long in width, 77 metres vertically and 108 metres in height. The cathedral contains a relief of Cardinal Aloysius Stepinac with Christ done by the Croatian sculptor Ivan Meštrović.

A short walk from the main square along Ilica is Britanski trg, where diplomats' wives buy their fruit and vegetables during the week. On Sundays, the stalls are cleared and an attractive bric-a-brac and antique market is laid out, with some 100 stallholders trading goods from first thing in the morning. Paintings, jewellery, old currency, badges, glass bottles, posters, crockery, silver, old farming tools, religious icons, all on display on wooden trestle tables - but few bargains. Gone are the days when you could find a gem going for a song. Still, some beautiful unique pieces will be on offer at prices far less than you'd pay at an Islington design shop.

Even if you don't find anything you want it's a convivial place for a potter around and a coffee afterwards - although finding a spot on a busy Sunday morning may prove difficult.

Just off the first square as you walk up from the station, the Bacchus Jazz Bar is an ideal place to meet friends, listen to jazz and either have a civilised party evening or get revved up for what's to come. Relaunched as a jazz bar in 2008 after several years on the social margins, the bar exudes a homely Dalmatian feel: the owner is from Split, and there's a fig tree next to the terrace, which is tucked into a passage off the street. Inside you'll find a hodgepodge of wooden furniture - a 1960s-era television and telephone, and wooden-plank floors under a brick ceiling. It's almost always busy, so tables will be at a premium. Wines, mainly Dalmatian, have been chosen to suit the mood. There are cocktails too, but few seem to be paying them much attention. Live poetry or spoken-word on Wednesday nights, jazz jams from Thursday through Saturday.

Medvednica or Zagreb mountain is a mountain in central Croatia, just north of Zagreb and marking the southern border of the historic region of Zagorje. The highest peak, at 1,035 m, is Sljeme. Most of the area of Medvednica is a nature park (park prirode), a type of preservation lesser than a national park. The area of the park is 228.26 square kilometers and about 63% is covered with forest.

The Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb, commonly referred to as HNK Zagreb, is a theatre, opera and ballet house located in Zagreb, owned and operated by the Ministry of Culture.

The theatre evolved out of the first city theatre built in 1836 housed in the present-day Old City Hall. The theatre was first established as the Croatian National Theatre in 1860, and in 1861 it gained government support putting it on par with many other European national theatres. In 1870 an opera company was added to the theatre and in 1895 it moved to the new purpose-built building on Marshal Tito Square in Zagreb's Lower Town, where it is based today.

Austro-Hungarian emperor Franz Joseph I was at the unveiling of this new building. The building itself was the project of famed Viennese architects Ferdinand Fellner and Herman Helmer, whose firm had built several theatres in Vienna. Celebrations marking the 100th anniversary of the building were held on October 14, 1995.

At the entrance of the theatre is located the famed wall fountain The Source of Life, designed by Croatian artist and sculptor Ivan Meštrović in 1905.

Many of Croatia's finest artist have worked at the Theatre. Its first manager and dramatist was the Greek-Croatian poet Dimitrija Demeter, a leading activist of the Croatian national revival movement, with Ivan Zajc as first conductor. Jakov Gotovac was the Theatre's opera conductor from 1923 to 1958. The famous Croatian theatre director Branko Gavella began his career here, as did the first Croatian prima ballerina Mia Čorak Slavenska.

The theatre has also seen many international artists including Franz Liszt, Sarah Bernhardt, Franz Lehár, Richard Strauss, Gerard Philipe, Vivien Leigh, Laurence Olivier, Jean-Louis Barrault, Peter Brook, Mario del Monaco, José Carreras.

This is sculpture Povijest Hrvata - History of Croatians by Ivan Meštrović. But this is copy, original is in Belgrade.
About it of flickr:

Usually people know this bronze cast of the History of the Croats or Povijest Hrvata (1932., Zagreb, actually it is indeed Mestrovic's mother Marta ). The real ched'oeuvre is the marble sculpture Povijest Hrvata which is in Belgrade in Dedinje ( in the Royal palace) as property of King Aleksandar I Karađorđević, who paid for it . Originally this statue was made for the future museum of Croatian Antiquities in Knin.
You can have a glimpse at www.globus.com.hr/Clanak.aspx?BrojID=38&ClanakID=545&... .

Thanks for the additional information. I found his art nouveau style pretty attractive and saw more works. Good!

A symbol of what is the sculpture ? Do you know why it's not in a croatian museum ?

Obviously this is proprietry of Karadjordjevic family, now Rebublic of Serbia. In the village Vrpolje, region Slavonia exist his house and gallery. And in Zagreb exist his atelier in Mletačka street, he has donated his atelier to Croatia.

I said wrong information about Ivan Mestrovich, I am not sure if they had a house in Vrpolje. Ivan Meštrović was born in the wagon train, he and his parents lived there when they came to Vrpolje from Drniš (Dalmatia), his parents were farmers and picked the corn. They lived in the wagon. But in Vrpolje is small gallery of him.

Mirogoj cemetery inters members of all religious groups: Catholic, Orthodox, Muslim, Jewish, Protestant, Latter Day Saints and irreligious graves can all be found. In the arcades are the last resting places of many famous Croatians. It is located today in the Gornji Grad - Medveščak city district. It's easy to get to the cemetery--a 10 minute bus ride from Kaptol Square brings you there.

I read an article what tourists like in Zagreb -this is Mirogoj cemetery. It says a lot about what kind of city it is, very boring. Interesting is museum of broken relationships, the botanical garden, the upper and lower town. Zagreb is a city with many secret entrances on Upper town, but tourists do not know this because it is not allowed to visit.

I miss Zagreb already :S I had such a great time there, me and my german girl walking at night in the old part of Zagreb watching it from the top and the park in front of train station. The party in History club and in one restaurant in center which was owned by an albanian and which I found out from his name in the receit :)

And I also love the upper town. New Zagreb neighborhood do not like because it looks like North Korea. But for residents of Zagreb it is the most beautiful place in the world, they do not see how it's ugly. Also, I like to ride on Sljeme, there are benches where you can sit and see the whole city from the hill. Young people like to go there at night.

The thing I like about Zagreb is that it has every advantage of capitol and big city, while it is not too big and dangerous. Plus, it is pretty ethnically homogenous, but lately there are some Arab asilants in one neighbourhood...

I love about Zagreb feeling that this barbie house when you walk through the city.

One of the most important Zagreb monuments of industrial architecture - Zagreb Paromlin. It was built from 1906 – 1908th.

During all the historical, political and ownership changes Paromlin building functioned as an industrial building until the eighties of the 20th century.

Well, it is snowing without break, there'll be 40-50 centimeters of snow for you tomorrow :)

It was one of the best apples i ate. Sweet but with dose of bitter taste. Snow is fine, but winds are unbearable. Specially here where there are no Mountains to shield us.

I like center of Zagreb and I like how much is happening there and also prices in restaurants and bars :D But I don't like other parts that much because they are not cohesive, not planned. It looks like everything was allowed to be build with no regulations. Some houses are too big but they are not completely built. Waste of money. But still Zagreb it's not bad. I feel generally very safe when I'm there and it has relaxed atmosphere.
