The United Nations, Controller of the Internet?

The United Nations will meet in Dubai this December to make a decision that could carry significant consequences for the future of all web users: Should the UN be granted more control over the Internet?

With the high-profile meeting looming at the end of this year’s calendar, key members of the U.S. government and private sector firms will meet with lawmakers Thursday to argue that the U.S. should work to defeat the proposal, which they consider a dangerous breach of existing norms.

No this is wrong. Freedom of speech between people world wide is paramount to any kind of real freedom.

Was the U.N originally intended for the purpose of a global government? That's what this is starting seem like. The internet is fine how it is, don't mess with it.

I have always been suspicious of this so called UN vs US rivalry when in fact they have the same goal. A New World Order under one government. The UN being headquartered in NYC is not by chance.

It's funny listening to Americans acting as though the UN is some threat to our sovereignty, when it's the US government that bullies the UN and gets it's way most of the time.

I have always been suspicious of this so called UN vs US rivalry when in fact they have the same goal. A New World Order under one government.

Is that goal recognized by the American people? I certainly do not wish for the world to become 'Americanized.' It is the strong competition with other countries that really maintains the greatness of the U.S and a one-world government would give no motivation for that. This, among other things, such as preservation of races and cultures really puts me off from such an idea becoming reality. If that is truly the goal of our government, then I strongly oppose the government on that matter, in addition to the UN. Seemingly, as you've stated in the post in the "Game of Thrones" thread it seems as if that is the only foreseeable progression for many.

Regardless, giving China more control in the affairs of the internet certainly isn't a good idea. I don't think it is a matter of UN vs US, but for them, US vs their country of choice. They want more control, and that is the only way they can gain it, via the UN. Hopefully if such a matter did occur, the US government (among others) would use its power within the UN to oppose anything restrictive on these other nations' terms.

Where there be a will there is a way. Internet and IT communications would be more erroneously costly to police and stay ahead of technology as the military. 100's of billions spent to police then a couple of smart ass teenagers find the back door making it obsolete. Be a good way to run attrition against a totalitarian state.

When the internet is switched off you know you have won.
