View Full Version : Who has a better fashion sense - Eastern Europeans or Western Europeans?

After posting in this (http://www.theapricity.com/forum/showthread.php?t=50854) thread, I was wondering what the general consensus is on this? I thought it was quite unanimous, but it seems some people are disagreeing with me. In my opinion, it's no question that western European women, on average, dress in a much classier manner then those in the east. The one exception here would be a certain group of lower class Brits that seem to enjoy dressing in a way that would be more common in Russia than northwestern Europe.

This is the map that correlates with what I consider "east" and "west" in this context, though I think Poland and Czech Republic are borderline and I'm not really sure how Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia fit in. I'm not really familiar with their dressing habits or fashion.

I made a comment about not being sure if Estonia, Latvia or Lithuania fit in with the "east".

And definitely the southern Europeans had better fashion sense in the past and they still has the better today.

That wouldn't make any sense. NW Europeans don't dress anything like NE Europeans. There is a more uniform "Western" look and "Eastern" look if one has to make the divide. Greece is Southern Europe (and perhaps a few other Balkan countries depending on whose definition of "Southern" you want to use) and while it is definitely not as bad as some Slavic countries, it has certainly inherited some bad fashion sense from the Balkans that doesn't exist in other Southern European countries.

Thanks to Aces High's kinsmen Eastern Euro have a solid chance of winning:p

BTW it should be smth like Former USSR Europe + Balkans than all of Eastern Europe. Slovack and Czech girls were dressed fine. Not many Polish girls I've seen so it's hard for me to generalize in their case.

Eastern Ukraine is unbeatable champ when it comes to badly dressed girls.

Yeah after I thought about it for a second I made a comment excluding most of those (though I'm not familiar with Slovaks). I'm also too lazy to make a map of my own and besides, what I said still applies to the bulk of the Balkans and Eastern Europe.

No offense, but for me it looks VERY Eastern European... Of course, it's better than some of Slavs come up with, but still...

I'd say it's hard to generalize, but I generally like how the Swedes, Austrians, Swiss, North Italians, French dress like. The Dutch would probably fit into that category as well. People in these countries wear quality clothes, know how to match colours and fabrics, usually have some knowledge about the latest trends and develop their own styles as well.

As for Lithuania, I think there are a lot of people who dress well here, but it also depends a lot on city/social status, things like that.

I think those differences like between Greece and other slavic countries are because of commie regime. The ex-commie countries didn't have any proper fashion sense because they were just simple proletarians while Greece was never under this kind of regime.

So, i say the central and southern Europeans have the best fashion sense excluding the ex-commie ones.

Of course, this happens in Lithuania as well, sometimes you can tell who's Lithuanian and who's Russian/Polish (of course it depends which social status the person has) but I wouldn't exclude Estonians from the whole 'Eastern European' pond.

Even though Estonians have some distinct style preferences (I've noticed, that, f.e., girls in Estonia like: bleaching their hair to the max (even if they're beautifully blonde naturally), smokey-eye effect, heavy black eyeliner, very contrasting clothing colours (black top, white/fair bottom), bright colours (pink, bright yellow, etc.), I would still never mix them with Western Europeans. Maybe in Germany girls dress a bit similar to that, idk.

I am talking about men. Italian men often = big brown belly sometimes with an undershirt, sometimes without it, young men just without the big belly and therefore with big chains and tons of mousse in their hair. I am not saying Germans are better, btw, I was talking about Estonians and Italians/French and I just said Italians arenīt better, not worse than Estonians. But ok, I bow before the greatness of southern food, looks, everything, as the Southern members have made it quite clear that everyone who lives not on the med coast is a pale, fat blonde swine without taste.

What you described is something that girls who want to be "babes" do. Its the same all over the world. Babes want to be blonde and wear pink, those who want to be goth dye their hair black etc... Most Estonians dont like very bright colours. Which unfortunately is a fashion right now, the stores are full of ugly neon things.

it's a bit of an exaggeration, but it's not uncommon to see a Balkan or ex-Soviet female walking around like that in the middle of the day just to run errands.

It's one thing to dress bad, it's another to lack class.

Well, I don't necessarily agree with this. Northwestern countries are currently superior in terms of economy, quality of life, organization, productivity, all sort of things, but it doesn't mean that southern countries aren't superior in others. Acknowledging that doesn't mean it comes out of jealously, sometimes it's just true.

I think it is a dumb stereotyp that Germans in general don`t dress adequatly.
I have seen enough of them who are very conscious about what to wear and show some great instict of choice when it comes to this matter.

No, this fashion is not bad at all.
Those German tourists are humble to know cultures of other countries.
At least they don't speak loud or drink a lot like Easterners. ;)

I was just joking with you people. I don't expect these tourists to look like that in everyday life. Well I hope not.........

I can't answer for them, I can only assume that because it's known and acknowledged that NW Europe/Germany is more advanced in many aspects, so they are oversensitive to NW Europeans/Germans taking credit where they feel it's not due. (though a boring or "bad" dressing NW European still looks better than a Slav wearing a cheap-looking miniskirt with heels)

Germans tend to dress casually and sober, they don't like to flaunt their bodies nor brand clothes. They don't dress good nor bad... Except for the white socks+sandals many of them use especially abroad, which is really bad taste. Southern Euros in comparison dress much better when they go abroad.

My opinion is that classic Italian and English upper-class clothing styles are the best.

In terms of Fashion Houses I can think of none in Eastern Europe of any noteriety. Most people with money go to Chanel, D&G, Loius Vuitton, Versace, etc....

I will say though it most be cheaper to buy over their because most upper-middle class looking tourists (French/Germans) dress in labels, but then I see them buy GAP and Abercrombie and Fitch and I'm like  So I guess its only expensive because of the import taxes...

Oh and looking at the pretty Ukranian and Russian nannies in the Jewish neighborhood I would say the sterotypical look still exists.

As for Lithuania, I think there are a lot of people who dress well here, but it also depends a lot on city/social status, things like that.

Fashion sense in Lithuania has changed a lot during the last ~ 6 years. Much more less tacky clothing, less very bleached hair.

More comfortable and at the same time more stylish, imo. At least among young people.

I remember in my school everyone dressed kind of the way I described. There was one girl ho wore pink high heels with pointy noses but she got comments about it. Apparently such clothing wasn't very outstanding in her previous school. My school was a bit better, btw.

I've seen one girl with those tacky high heels with pointy noses and tacky purse several months ago. Looked rather exceptional today. She had such a a beautiful face, it just felt wrong.

Anyway, I think that this comfortable, stylish and perhaps "earthy" fashion of clothing is ok. at least it corresponds better to our historical fashion and the feel of aesthetics which is nowhere close to tacky, imho.

Sartorial anguish awaits me as I have a holiday planned in Northern Italy. Brits wear suits suits and more suits in London, but our smart casual simply looks ragged next to Italian style. What ever to wear?

However, there is Essex, where girls go to the supermarket dressed like this:

I think Westerners have better a better sense of fasion than Eastern Europeans. It's not always the case though. In the Balkans they tend to emulate Western European clothing, especially Italian fashion, which is probably the best. It's definitely the case for Albania. Putting Eastern Europe against Western Europe is also a very simplistic and too broad grouping as there are very clear and large differences inside those groups.

And in general, I think the negative aspects of Eastern European sense of fashion is characterized of being cheap, tacky and distasteful; their sense of fashion is affected by their socio-economic status, being relatively new to the world of fashion and capitalism. The negative aspects of Western European is characterized by silly fashion trends, trying too hard and apathy towards fashion (something which I'm not against).

This comes from a guy who dresses in anything that incorporates socks, shoes, boxer-shorts, jeans, belt, shirt, etc. and doesn't think of it much beyond that. I might not be the most reliable person on this issue.

You shouldn't all pose supermodels here :D and catalogue photos... we all know people in everyday life, while going to work, on average(I'm talking in terms of average age, shape and financial state) don't really wear all that stuff. And mind you... I'm not even bringing into discussion religion, because that would also have an impact on the individual and how they dress.

The Western tend to go for the more "comfortable", paying attention to the "practical", and the East chooses to rebel against restriction(a clean connection of past events, political if I might add).

Who is better? Well... I'm no fashion mogul, and this whole industry if analyzed can turn out quite impressive and sophisticated, no matter the region. "Better" is what I'd say... whatever suits each and every person. "Better" is according to one's likes/dislikes, education and background. The answer can greatly vary.

From my point of view, best is some blend of the two :).

Well, in Germany and England people dress really ugly (on average), but in Spain, Italy and France they have a very good sense how to dress.

If you are talking about Parisians I agree. But Paris =/= Western Europe. Everywhere else in the West there's a mixture of elegant, tacky, hipstery and dowright trashy.

The one exception here would be a certain group of lower class Brits that seem to enjoy dressing in a way that would be more common in Russia than northwestern Europe.

LOOOOOOOOOOOL "a certain group",. You get the award of "understatement of the week". You are talking about the entire working class which, in a country with one of the wider economic gaps of the entire west, composes an important chunk of the population. At least 40% in the city I live in, which is one of the most better-off and educated in the nation, and famous for being "chic" and "stilysh" (in the British sense, that is)

British "classy" girls tend to overdress and generally look more "funny" (in the "silly/impractical/try-too-hard way) than "elegant". Just because the obsess about clothing and they spend craploads of cash on styling and are very self-aware about their sense of fashion, doesn't mean their sense of fashion is really any better. It is the same with food. Just because UK is obsessed now with food and people are a lot more aware and tehre are a lot more good restaurants than it used to, it doesn't mean that Britons eat any better than their neighbours. They still pretty much "don't know what they're doing" like that funny dogue meme. Also male's hairstyles in the UK are all stupid. ALL.OF.THEM

Warsaw "classy" gals dress a lot better. The Spanish and Italian "classy" people dress a lot better too (yet still far from Parisians, and of course the sense of style of the majority of the Spanish and Italian population is more than "dubious" and in many senses not very aestheticaly pleasing. It just so happens that better weather and better looking people, allows for more simplicity and that somehow camouflages the lack of taste).

And let's not even start with German or Scandinavians (ROLLOLOLL) , specially the Scando guys are an authentic laughing stock. As an average, educated people from Eastern countries have a better sense of style than average westerners. It's just that the majority of Easterners that we see in the west are either working class or newly rich, which is pretty much the same people but with more money.

You can see everyday people there. Not just models, not just people ready to be photographed.
I think a shopping street and an airport is more representative of over all fashionsense.

With that , we agree :thumb001:

And yeah, I don't like either western or Eastern. Eastern tend to overdress, trying too much to look sexy and most of times look 2nd class.Girls don't really know the difference of feminime and tacky.
On the other hand, in west, its either very androgynous and plain (seriously, you can see so many women wearing this boy-line jeans, not hugging their ass and stuff), or very very low-slutty (British girls night out).
And yes, of course there are good examples in both sides, I'm talking about average though.

Do not forget that the models often use fashion brands at work. In everyday life, they dress normally. With models having their own style

Portuguese, Spaniards and French.
Eastern Europeans, Germans and British dress too trashy/informal, white socks with sandals, jackets with shorts, t-shirts with ironic lines, etc....
Swedes and Italians are on the opposite end, fashion divas, they try too hard too look good.

Eastern Europeans these days dress much better than people might think.

Western Europeans being bigger status whores try more and end up looking all the same. EE all look the same with less pretense and more flip flops.

I couldn't do that. I wore high heels once and it killed my feet.

Lol. And if I don't wear heels then i feel like im standing slanted or walking like that haha. Well I wear flip flop too. They're cute so for summer i can wear them sometimes. The most I wore sneakers was for p.e. In school that's it. I just got used to heels. I wore them since I was ten so now it's a habit and my feet are used to them.

How can one compare a diverse group of people?

Some western Europeans have a good sense of fashion. Milan is the capital of fashion. But so do east Europeans have a good sense of fashion despite Italians and French put on fashion trends. I've seen English and French wearing clothes that our people would not wear taking rubbish outside. I have seen dressed up English and French in fashion who are so much ahead than our ordinary people. Without counting a number of people who dress up in fashion it's difficult to tell. So, I voted both.

It is not necessarily a good thing in my eyes. Some of the men who dress fashionably looks faggish imo.
