View Full Version : Difference between Eastern and Western European sense of dress

Somebody else made a similar thread recently which got me thinking.

What are differences in style of dress between Western and Eastern Euros?

Is there a particular style, a preference of certain clothes?

Please feel free to post pics!

I was thinking more in terms of favouring certain items or combinations.

I have read quite a lot about Eastern women going to buy milk dressed in a cocktail dress. I would assume that this is not the rule? Or is it?

What is fashionable in the East which is not fashionable in the West? Or vice versa.

Please post pics!

Easterners love showoffs. I don't know why, but In urban Romania, they spend 2 months salary in advance for a pair of shoes, for some designer sunglasses or some trendy perfume. Sometimes is not the good taste that prevails, but the price. They go straight for the most exotic designer clothes and accessories, from government representatives to students, professionals and clubbers. Nothing is too expensive for them, especially high-maintenance milf's, the quintessence of western civilization in their perception. Maybe a reminiscence of "behind the iron curtain" inferiority complex.

Well as said in that other thread:
EEs have less money that's why they can't afford to buy the most fashionable and quality clothes, fashion trends in general come later.

I agree with Cyrus that people feel the need to show off. Middle class (real middle class, not what people here might consider as having average income) layer in thinner here, so there is this bigger (also psychologically) gap between the rich and the poor layers of society. While middle class can afford to buy a designer item from time to time in the west here most people really can't afford it. So, this showing off basically means "look, I have money".

Also, here there are more people who dress like it's 90s, so perhaps others try to look more modern and avoid these "old" looks and follow fashion trends in order to not look like the people I mentioned. I'm comparing it to what I've seen in foreign online street style blogs. Perhaps these styles aren't very common nowhere but i indeed got a feeling that people here avoid certain trends of 90s or 80s for that reason.

This is how average Eastern Europeans dress like:

Without trying to generalize and put them all in the same boat, americans are probably the last in line. They don't really care about the way they dress. A hunter camouflage t shirt form walmart should be good enough for a man and woman alike, besides blue jeans and tennis shoes. Blacks and I mean afro americans spend a lot more on clothing, hair and nails beauty salons, probably because "they can too". Russians in my opinion are first in line, big time spenders, and everything about the way they dress screams lavish.

:thumb001:Absolutely right.
And along with this, goes the enormous amount of make up they put on their faces.I've seen 10 years old girls,"painted" like a women at at least 40/in the meaning if you want to hide the wrinkles and age changes/
Here,in Bulgaria also it doesn't matter how much it costs-the most important is the dress to be bought from a famous brand, and to be shown off everywhere no matter of location, situation or shapes of the body.Though everyone has the right to choose his clothes the way he likes, some girls just look ridiculous to me.

Average Western European dressing style

http://blog.musikexpress.de/wp-content/uploads/2008/03/stil_in_berlin_07.jpg

Casual, comfortable, subtly sexy, chic, impossible to tell whether the outfit is expensive or not. Emphasis on the oversized handbag which indicates that this woman spends a lot of time away from home due to her professional obligations ;)

Average Eastern European dressing style:

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_MwIUnmXlVOQ/SbUoPUjUxUI/AAAAAAAAACg/dZh5u2jD6Yw/s400/serbian_girl.jpg

Uncomfortable, attention-seeking, ridiculously over the top for the occasion, usually with designer tag in a visible spot so that everyone can tell this woman has a sugar daddy :D

Now - humour aside - :D

I guess in Eastern Europe and especially post-communist countries there is a tendency towards eccentricity and the showing off of newly acquired wealth.

Whereas in Western Europe where everyone has been well off financially for quite some time now, there's no need for competition on such a level (who's wearing the most expensive clothes). So the emphasis shifts to practicality.

No matter what era, or what country, the general style of the West is always usually plain, solid colours. Eastern dress (Middle East, India, China, East Europe and Russia) dress in very rich rainbow colours with decourations and patterns in different colours.

So far I've mostly seen pictures from "the sartorialist" (fashion and photography blog that I like to visit; the photographer and a lot of his subjects work in the fashion industry) as examples of "common" W.E. sense of style, contrasted with pictures of lower-class people in the country side, as representative of Eastern Europe.
Not quite fair:p

In urban areas and well to do people tend to dress tasteful all over Europe, I'd say. The differences disappear.

We have to define what is Eastern vs Western; European vs non-European. And I noticed folk costumes being put up here. There is a difference between a country's national folk costume and the way they commonly dress.
I don't think people in Eastern Europe are going around with this dress style:

Here, tracksuits are often associated with the ćefur subculture (troublemakers who refuse to integrate, often of southern origin, but not necessarily), even though everyone owns a few such clothes. But some people always wear it - to work, cinema, nightclub, opera... most of them do ofcourse also have more appropriate clothing for the occasion in their closets, but refuse to wear it to grab attention :picard1:

Jogging suits are easy to wash and if you gain or lose weight you can still wear them because of the elasticized waist bands and stretchy material. You can also mix and match the jackets and the pants. So in the long run they are cheaper to have.

I think fashion, like most art, has gone down the drain pretty much everywhere. I am a woman and a feminist, and all that, but I LOATHE seeing women dress up in stupid geometric cuts, army boots, fishnet stockings, dark/bland colors, and wearing pearcings and tattoos and really heavy makeup. Totally gross.
I hate vulgarity.
I live in Western Romania, which is supposed to be more "civilized", somewhat, and dunnoo..I see people in all kinds of styles. Some nice, some, really trashy and cheap-looking.
A lot of girls here seem to prefer spending money on cheap brightly-colored fabrics, rather than discreet-colored quality fabrics.
To me, it's all about fabric. I'd rather spend money on a dress that's 100% linnen, and has a simple/classic cut, rather than some super-colored, super-gaudy looking polyester crap.
I did see one women a couple of months ago that really impressed me in a positive way, and made me think maybe civilization hasn't ended just yet..she was maybe around 50, tastefully made-up(a touch of lipstick, nice dark hair, wavy), and she was wearing a lovely white summer dress, covered in some lace patterns, with a wide summer hat, also white, and shoes and bag to match. She looked amazing. I thought to myself "finally, a woman who's proud to be a woman".

Linen can make an outfit look old and wrinkled looking. Polyester is more feminine and beautiful and flows nicely. I think people should wear colors and prints according to their coloring. Unfortunately people are picking styles that don't suit them. Don't waste your money! Also some styles should never have been made and look like they come straight from Bangladesh.

It does not look old. If you saw the dress, you'd know what I mean. I have one, in dark green, with embroydery. Plus, it feel great in the summer, during this fabulous heat. It keeps me cool.

Linen is mostly worn in summer because it lets your skin breathe.

Polyester and other syntehtic fabrics make you sweat more.

If you want to maintain linen clothes, you have to know how to do it. It's the same with all natural fabrics such as silk, cashmire, wool etc.
