I used to lift weights in the late 1950's. Unfortunately, my joints objected to the tensional stress and I developed tendinitis. In later years, I used to take long walks until my feet began to pain me owing to hammer toes. Nowadays, I rarely walk more than about 1/4 mile (0.4 KM.)

No, and certain weight training exercises I cannot do, such as leg press because of lovely sciatica. However, I can do yoga every day, and could train with weights, but people who do yoga daily don't want to do anything other than a weights, swimming, cycling, or climbing, and running is out of the question. No, no and never. It's the anti-yoga which makes the knees disintegrate!

It would be a shame if you didn't. Different times of life are for different things, but my yoga contemporaries from ten years ago are now teaching teachers. I wish I had not let it go. It's a switch which one needs to somehow flick! Certain genes need to be activated or we simply wither, and it really should be done six days a week, rather than the stress and recover pattern, which is not for longevity.

Since you are mentioning yoga. If you train strength you have to pay attention to your joints, and tendons and stay flexible. Yoga is a no no when you strength train, because some of the stretches in yoga go beyond the full range of motion of the joint and when you do that you are stretching ligaments. Stretched ligaments are a big disadvantage to joint strength and stability, they cause joint to be loose, weak and prone to injuries. In my opinion a better way to go is to do joint mobility exercises and western style stretching. You want you joints flexible but at the same time strong and tight. Stretching ligaments is a bad idea all around. Never go beyond joint's range of motion.

Wow, that's impressive stuff!

I've only really dabbled in beginner yoga, to be honest--most of what I do is Western-style stretching, and it works well for me. I'm definitely not against exploring yoga further, however; are there any resources that you'd recommend as a jumping-off point?

If you just stick to sun salutations, then it shouldn't disrupt what you are doing, but augment it.

I am curious about what arcticwolf said about stretched ligaments being a danger to those who weight train. I suppose the same would be true of some gymnastics, and on reflection I would be cautious.

Surya namaskara wouldn't be that. It is so basic, so simple, but wonderful for keeping the spine flexible. It would be the very first lesson and the best place to start, and you could take months to perfect it, meanwhile you would become quite strong and flexible.

It's really important to start off slowly. In the beginning, I would power walk for 20 minutes, three days a week. After a couple of weeks of that, I started jogging for five minute intervals.

Now, I'm able to jog steadily for about 20 minutes before I need to take a walk break. When I do break to walk, I only walk for a minute or so before I start jogging again. My pace is only fast enough to keep my heart rate a bit elevated; I'm not really interested in sprinting. Endurance is more important to me.

I started losing weight after two or three weeks. The only dieting I do is portion control. The only meat I eat is fish. I never eat fast food. Everyone is so different. What your body needs to maintain a healthy weight will be different from what my body needs. I recommend cutting out processed sugar and white flour.

I go to the gym as I can, I try for three days a week, but it's completely dependent as to when I can have someone watch the baby, If it's been a couple of days since I've been to the gym, then I do a kettle bell workout video. And if I still can't go to the gym but my legs are too sore from kettle bells, then I do pushups instead.

Pullups and dips are two of the greatest exercises known to man (I'm especially partial to pullups). :thumbs up

Based on the way you've laid your sets out, it looks like you complete all ten of your pullup sets before moving on to dips. Have you ever tried supersetting the two? The combination is extremely muscularly taxing, gets your cardiovascular system working a but harder, and gives a pump like no other?

Since the thread is sort of moving in this direction, I might as well run my latest workout idea by you guys (in fact, I plan on starting this up tomorrow). The principle is simple: begin the week with a three-day period of pure volume and hypertrophy work, take a day to recover, and then set aside two days to help my strength progress before finishing up the week with another rest day.

Day One

5 sets, 8-12 reps: BB Incline Press/BB Row Superset
3 sets, 6-10 reps: Pullup/Dip Superset
3 sets, 8-12 reps: DB Chest Press/Lat Pulldown Superset

That's remarkable progress; nicely done!

One option to consider in lieu of adding distance without changing any other variables is to start including some walk/sprint intervals. A typical cycle could be something like this: after warming up, jog 5 minutes, walk 30 seconds, sprint 30 seconds, walk 30 seconds, sprint 30 seconds, jog 5 minutes...ad infinitum (or, at least until you're tired!).

This will add an interesting new dimension to your routine, and the sprint intervals are great for burning calories and getting the heart rate up. Be warned, however: you might look a bit insane to passers-by while randomly breaking into a sprint directly from a walking pace. :D

4 sets, 12-15 reps: Cable Chest Fly/One-Armed Cable Row Superset

Day Two

4 sets, 8-12 reps: BB Military Press/Trap Bar Shrug Superset
3 sets, 12-15 reps: DB Front Raise/Lateral Raise/Rear Delt Raise Superset
4 sets, 6-10 reps: BB Biceps Curl/EZ Bar Skullcrushers Superset
4 sets, 8-12 reps: Seated DB Hammer Curls/Seated Cable Triceps Extension Superset

Day Three

4 sets, 6-10 reps: Romanian Deadlift/Hack Squat Superset
4 sets, 8-12 reps: Leg Extension/Leg Curl Superset
2 sets, 15-20 reps: Abbductor/Adductor Superset
5 sets, 12-20 reps: Standing Calf Raise/Seated Calf Raise Superset

Day Four: Rest

Day Five

4 sets, 3-5 reps: BB Bench Press
4 sets, 3-5 reps: Plate-Loaded Row (chest supported)
4 sets, 3-5 reps: Hammer Strength Shoulder Press
4 sets, 3-5 reps: Weighted Pullups

Day Six

4 sets, 3-5 reps: Back Squats
4 sets, 3-5 reps: Leg Press (feet high)
2 sets, 3-5 reps: DB Weighted Lunges
2 sets, failure: Glute-Ham Raise
4 sets, 8-12: Standing Calf Raise

Nice. There are conflicting schools of thought on training to failure.

Have you read anything by Pavel Tsatsouline? He is Russian American a former Spetsnaz trainer, who now lives in California I think and it's married to an American lady. He is now training US special forces. His stuff is worth reading.

Well, just to be clear, on my hypertrophy days I'm not going to failure (near failure, for sure, but not quite there). If I went to failure on each of those supersets, I think I'd fall down dead halfway through the workout. :D Besides, staying away from failure will allow me to keep the rest between sets to a minimum on hypertrophy days (ideally around 1 minute).

As to Pavel, the name absolutely rings a bell, but I can't say that I'm overly familiar with his training philosophies. What does he typically advocate?

Never training to failure, finishing fresher than starting, more energized. Mastering full body/local tension to maximize strength, power breathing, loaded stretching for strength etc. His books "Beyond Bodybuilding", "Naked Warrior" and others are well worth reading. His stretching and kettlebell abilities are amazing. Check his stuff out, it's well worth it.

My bad. That's exactly what I do. And I used to do the dips with a swing(with a vertical motion in each end of the amplitude), but I got a shoulder injury and am doing it the conventional way for now.

No lean. Body is straight vertical. Elbows close to the trunk.

The swing dips (mokri kofichki as we call it here:)), I intend to get back to as soon as possible, look like this:

Only I go up and down in both ends of the amplitude.

This is high intensity interval training. :thumbs up What's great about it is that it burns fat like crazy. This is what I do, and I've lost 15 pounds since mid-March. HIIT causes you to release growth hormones, and that burns fat, especially abdominal fat. I do the intervals on the treadmill, for a session that is about 20 minutes, and then I do 40 minutes of weight training, concentrating on my postural muscle groups, with ab work and bench presses and leg work. I'm very happy with my progress, it's the best I've done in years. :D

However I still manage to do a full days work, you don't have to work 8hours to do a full days work.
So I guess the answer is yes I do, only not in the conventional way I do however have a yoga mat not to be sniffed at, at £50 per mat but they do have a life long garrentee.
It helps keep me fit, people say Oh yea I can do 1,000 push ups, well I would like to see that person do 10 sun salutations.

I just need to be careful how much weight I lift. I have the body type that can very easily build muscle, and I would look like a beef bot dyke in no time with no steroids! Back in 2008, I was doing heavy duty strength training and I was able to squat 200 pounds (on a free standing machine) and arm curl 20 pounds. And that was only after a couple of months. I would see men rack down after me sometimes! But I wasn't losing weight, and my fat loss had very slow progress. So, when I had gotten sick for a week, I had lost my motivation, and didn't get it back for another year... and that cycle has happened a lot over the years.......:o

But now I do higher reps, I try for at least 12, and on certain exercises, I do as many as 20. Like on my squats, I do 150 pounds with 2-3 sets of 20 reps. It doesn't feel like I'm bulking up as much with that method. Now I just need to remember to fully stretch out more.... :D

You have to develop a routine. Training has to be an integral part of your life.
But don`t break it up when you miss one day. This is not that important. It is enough when you do it 5 times a week. So you can allow yourself two random days without training.

I do the same with swimming now, I try it 5 times a week 500m.
It has always been my weak point, because I have not been able to swim only 100m since a couple of month. Now I start to like it and break personal records :)

Dude to develop pushing power of the upper body dips are far superior to push-ups. Dips and pull-ups are all you need to develop powerful upper body. Add breathing squats and dead lift, and you've got a killer routine that covers everything. Keep it simple. ;)

I've started doing HIIT every other day. I try to do full body calisthenics 2x a week but have been slacking on that since I don't have enough free time. I used to be in perfect shape 185lbs 5% BF before I crushed discs in my back from an old accident. Just have to do what I can..

If you do more than 12-16 pushups in a set you aren't really doing much for strength but endurance instead. I only do 3 sets of 16 pushups and switch from incline and diamond pushups. I do weightless squats and lunges as well. I used to do the same squats with 400lbs and lunges with 50lbs in each hand so it's sucks I can only do calisthenics now. Still probably better than the majority of people my age though.

currently I do three days of resistance training (weights, kettlebells, body weight exercises) and 3 cardio days. For cardio I prefer to hike, snowshoe or do some heavy bag work. I also use a heart rate monitor to measure my cardio intensity. Every few weeksI switch my routine up.

I put early my comments about work-out in the wrong section for this thing (in "Sport"). Sorry. This place definitely more appropriate for the personal physical activity.

My job can be physically demanding, so just going to work is almost like weight training. I'm also a mountain biker.

It's a must to take a break of 1-2 weeks once in a while.

I get very tense if I don't at least get out of the house for a walk, and I'm not running 10k everyday or anything. Sometimes it's just a 10 minute jog.

2-3 times a week. Mostly because then you sleep like a baby and are up to anything in mornings, rather than becoming an headless torso.

Yesss...though nowhere near as much as I used to...when I was a student I was 3 times a week / 4 times a week alternate, protein shakes, varying cardio and weights...now I am lucky if I go 3 times a week and I basically don't do cardio.

I am an easy-gainer so my muscles have stayed ok (mainly chest/shoulder/upper back and lesser extent triceps). But my fitness is now 0, I used to play regular 90 minutes football now I would puke up on the side of the pitch after 10 minutes. :lmao

of course this is the price of working 10-12 hours in a day...which I would not exchange for being a bit fitter.

When I lifted heavy, I was pretty big for my frame...I lost substantial bit of muscle from just being sedentary this summer and am down to my lowest weight.

I also have broad shoulders and a natural v-taper so when I put on muscle I look bigger than my actual weight:

I look really skinniy when clothed though

Even going the whole week you still have rest days. You don't train the same muscle groups in a row.

Yeah but you shouldn't do cardio 7 days a week.

Not even 10 minutes for warm up? I'm not able to do more than 15 pull-ups if I don't warm up first.
