20 years after the declaration of independence Macedonia has done nothing to get back its cultural heritage, comments Deutsche Welle Radio in its programme for Macedonia.

“When will the process of returning Macedonia’s cultural heritage start – instead of just receiving copies of valuable objects, which are being kept at the museums in Belgrade and Sofia? Director of the Macedonian Cultural Heritage Protection Office, Pasko Kuzman, said that few years ago the Macedonian authorities have started working out a catalogue with the items exported from Macedonia,” the radio comments further.

According to Kuzman, there is no concrete information about the objects that have left the territory of the country.

“The biggest part of the cultural-historical valuables has been exported to neighbouring Serbia and Bulgaria when Macedonia was part of their territory. More than 20,000 iconographic pieces of arts from Macedonian churches and monasteries are now in the collections of foreign countries,” Kuzman said.

Anonymous source from the Macedonian Interior Ministry recently remarked that Macedonia should try to get back its cultural heritage, since neither Egypt nor Greece were legal parties when their cultural heritage was stolen but yet they launched initiatives to get it back.
