Santo Domingo.- You want love and peace? Head to the ice...land that is, the chillin’ nation has just been tapped the most peaceful country on the planet for the second straight year, by the 2012 Global Peace Index (GPI).

But tropical Dominican Republic doesn’t rate even close, ranked 90th among the 158 nations rated by the GPI, remaining relatively stagnant at 92 of 153 countries in 2011, and 81 of 148 in 2010.

New Zealand and Denmark tied for second place, Canada came in fourth and Japan fifth, with the United States ranked No. 88 of the 158 in the Index, with Somalia dubbed the "least peaceful" at 155 with Iraq 156, Sudan and Afghanistan’s 157.

The figures are an annual attempt by the nonprofit Institute for Economics and Peace to examine more than 20 criteria -- including access to weapons, jailed population and violent crime figures in each country -- to create a global peace map.

Well its not really a surprise if you look at how few of immigrants there are in Iceland, and how homogenous the whole population is relatively speaking, so I think Iceland would lose its title as least Violent country if any Caribbeans decided to settle in it.

Population: 317,398

I would say compare it to new york.. but now I think compare it to Florida where they just try to eat you.

Not just Caribbeans, but North Americans and even mainland Europeans themselves, is more about their consistent harmonious culture then anything I believe.

Outside of countries like Iceland, Norway, Japan etc. We all seem to be living about this selfish mentality and sick as well. While these types of countries seem to preserve their own unique mentality. But I would like to say that there are Caribbeans or people who immigrate from other parts of the world who would easily stand up as more civilize then the native of the country they have immigrated to, my family from both sides is a good example.

Notice Russia ranks at 153 and it's very white country as compare to DR or Brazil meaning that culture has a tremendous implication when it comes to peaceful societies..

Is more about the actual culture then the population itself, but yeah you have to give some credit to Iceland for maintaining such a small and stable population.

Guys, here's a very interesting map... 2012 Global Peace Index

No wonder, since it's such a small country.

Homogenous population and an aboove average IQ are needed for a peaceful country.

I also think a sense of social stability plays a part, if Icelanders were a extremely poor population and most of them immigrated to a country and ended up in some multi-ethnic city slum, many would most likely end up just as violent and criminal as any other ethnic group in a similar situation. Like the Irish in Five Points, New York in the late 19th century.

Malaysia is ranked No20, it doesn't have a homogenous population. Somalia is homogenous, but it's the lowest ranking of all the countries with the data available. Overall it seems that European countries dominate.

According to statics Botswana has an average IQ of 72 and they still rank at position 31 plus their HDI (Human Development Index) is one of the fastest growing in Sub-Sahara Africa.

Nurture affects attitudes tremendously. A guetto Dominican or Puerto Rican born in NYC will act differently then one raised in his/her parents native land , born with neighbor and family support and good traditions.

Europe dominates due to its socioeconomic stability, countries like UK may become less stable due its influx of immigrants from countries like India, Pakistan and others which rank way above in the peace index chart as less peaceful.

Hopefully is Iceland if ever decides to bring in immigrants in the future they do so by bringing in people with good education and behavior, for their sake.

True, nobody today think of the Irish or Dutch as criminals and gangster. ;)

In 17th century in Norway, some Dutch immigrants formed gangs to fight Scottish and German immigrants for a better position at the docks in Bergen, they also sat fire to warehouses and did acts of vandalization.

Preached by a German priest in Bergen:

”Rotten, Skotten, Hollender und Zegen verderben`s allerwegen; da die seyn, kan nichts gedeien.”

Also poor Swedish immigrants were accused of being behind most of the crime in the captital Oslo during the 19th century.(accusing a foreign immigrant populations of being the root of all societies ills is nothing new.)

Immigrants in Iceland are 13% of the population.

It's a breautiful southern city, very pictoresque and with great food and nice people, but some districts are worse than some NYC ones like Lower Bronx, Brighton Beach or East Harlem.

A few individuals aren't a good example of collective society, but society itself (millions of people in such country) build together its present country to success. It's amazing how some people bash SSA countries, even the successful one with pity excuses on how they obtained their success, instead of just admitted they did it because they worked together to make it work and broke the chains of their retrogressive ancestral culture, because as humans everything can be achieved when the vicious retrogressive cultural circle is broken, pretty much.

This can be attributed to the difficulty of being anonymous in a sparsely populated country and more importantly the high standard of living. In historic times this country was well-known for it's violence.

We may want you to believe differently but Icelanders are a rather unpleasant people, overly-reserved, self-involved, rude and sulky. We have all of the ingredients needed for berserk, we're just kept occupied by modern distractions. Take away facebook and our flat screen TVs and you'll get some violence.

china is monoracial and they have almost same violence as USA

it has to do with many other things than Race

mostly that people from historically and genetically from uncivilized societies find it hard to cope to city life because it is not within their nature.

but also most likely it is a cultural thing and population.

You can't compare countries to iceland.. berlin has a larger population iceland.

Northern Europe got a history of violence, it's a wonder we are so peaceful these days.
