Gunman, Guard Shot at Holocaust Museum

WASHINGTON - An elderly gunman exchanged fire with security guards inside the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum on Wednesday. One security guard and the gunman were taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Law enforcement officials identified the suspect as James Wenneker von Brunn, 88, from the Eastern Shore of Maryland, NBC News reported. NBC said he may have had connections to hate groups or anti-government groups.

D.C. police spokeswoman Traci Hughes said the suspect walked into the museum at about 12:50 p.m. ET with a rifle and shot a guard. U.S. Park Police Sgt. David Schlosser says one or more guards at the museum returned fire, hitting the suspect.

D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier said the suspect immediately began shooting his rifle as he entered the museum. The FBI said it had no earlier reports of threats against the museum.

Authorities said the gunman was in critical condition and the security guard was in grave condition. Both were taken to George Washington University Hospital.

A third person reportedly was hurt after being cut by broken glass.

Von Brunn is believed to have had contact with law enforcement in the past, according to NBC. A D.C. Superior Court jury convicted a man by the same name in 1983 of attempting to kidnap members of the Federal Reserve Board.

The case involved a 1981 incident in which police arrested Von Brunn at the board's headquarters carrying several weapons. He was convicted and later released from federal prison in 1989, records show.

White House reaction
The White House said President Barack Obama was saddened by the shooting and concerned about a guard who was reportedly injured.

White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said he told Obama about the shooting on Wednesday afternoon. Gibbs later told reporters that he gave Obama the facts as they were known at the time, shortly after shots were fired.

Gibbs says White House officials are receiving regular updates from the FBI, the Homeland Security Council and the White House Situation Room.

The museum normally has a heavy security presence with guards positioned both inside and outside. All visitors are required to pass through metal detectors at the entrance, and bags are screened.

It was not immediately known whether the gunman made it through the detectors before opening fire.

The museum, located just off the National Mall near the Washington Monument, is a popular tourist attraction. It draws about 1.7 million visitors each year.

Roads surrounding the museum have been closed and blocked off with yellow tape. Several police cars and officers on horses surround the area.

Schlosser said park police SWAT teams are doing a secondary sweep of the building, but they don't believe there is another gunman.

Students heard several shots
Sandy Perkins of Massachusetts said her daughter, Abigail, called her shortly after the shooting. The teen was on a school trip to the museum and told her mother students heard several shots before they were told to leave the building.

Abigail said some of her friends were very shaken, but all were otherwise fine, Sandy Perkins said.

The teens did not see where the shots were coming from.

Linda Elston, who is visiting the museum from Nevada City, Calif., says she was on the lower level of the museum watching a film when she and others were told to evacuate.

"It was totally full of people," Elston said. "It took us awhile to get out."

She said she didn't hear any shots and didn't immediately know why there was an evacuation leaving her feeling "a little anxious."

The Embassy of Israel in Washington said it was "shocked and saddened" by the shooting in a statement.

I caught this, but the initial reports that I heard said he was acting alone. I wonder if, even now, the media is scrambling to connect him to white nationalism or white preservationism. The Jews always get the benefit of the doubt because of the successful media campaign of decades to present them as a persecuted minority. Certainly no violence ought to be taken against them, but I feel that, at times, the interests of Israel have been put above and beyond the interests of the United States.

Anyways, this is an isolated case of an obvious fruitloop who has a long record of encounters with the law. His lack of self-control and his inability to use any other form of expression except violence point to a mental patient and not a true representative of the white race of people. Criminal acts by those on the right, however, are given a disproportionate amount of attention by every news outlet. There's a fascinating snippet in today's Washington Post that sheds some light on the BNP's close relationship with neo-Nazis on the other side of the Atlantic.

In gathering details about Von Brunn, who was deeply involved in American neo-Nazi groups, the Post spoke to one Todd Blodgett (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/06/10/AR2009061003495_2.html?sid=ST2009061101157), a former Reagan White House aide who went on to mix and associate with a variety of far-right groups. He met regularly with Von Brunn throughout the 1990s and early 2000s.

At the time the BNP were forging close links with a variety of US white supremacists and the party's leader Nick Griffin remains close friends with powerful American neo-Nazis such as David Duke, a former Klu Klux Klan leader and Don Black, another KKK chap who went on to found Stormfront and was placed on the UK's banned list (http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/britains-least-wanted-the-16-barred-from-the-uk-1679719.html) two months ago. According to the Post, Von Brunn and Blodgett would regularly attend meetings in Arlington County of the American Friends of the BNP, which raised funds for the British white supremacist group.

The American Friends was wound up by Coterill in 2001 after the Southern Poverty Law Centre, which investigates American white supremacists, started looking into its fundrasing (http://www.searchlightmagazine.com/index.php?link=template&story=109) - but the links between the BNP and their sympathisers stateside remain strong.

Obviously there is little the BNP can do to stop someone attending their meetings in the US but the very fact that someone like Von Brunn - who used to say he fought on the wrong side during World War Two - was a fan reveals the kind of company these people keep.

Yet what seems to be missing from all accounts of Copeland being a BNP member is the glaring fact that he was not a BNP member when he carried out his attacks and in his own words: "I must admit that I was a member for a few months and didn’t take it seriously."

At his trial, the psychiatric report even went on to state: “He went to some of its [the BNP’s] meetings but did not like their adherence to democracy.”There's a lot more to the whole Copeland terror campaign (worthy of a new thread perhaps?) but you will never hear the actual facts coming from the media or the rank and file of the "anti-Fascists".

WASHINGTON – Child pornography was found on a computer belonging to the white supremacist charged with shooting and killing a security guard at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, the FBI said in court documents. Agents found the material on a desktop computer seized from the Annapolis, Md., apartment where 88-year-old James von Brunn lived with his son and son's finacee, FBI Special Agent Ronald Farnsworth said in an affidavit filed Wednesday in support of a search warrant. Investigators searched the home last Thursday, taking more than 30 items, including ammunition, computers, thumb drives, CDs, memory cards, cell phones and videos.
Authorities will analyze who had access to the computer to determine whether the pornography was von Brunn's, or if it could have belonged to someone else, prosecutors said. No decisions on charges have been made.
The documents didn't say what form the pornography was in, or how much of it was there.
In separate documents filed on Wednesday, the FBI said it found 35 rounds of .22-caliber ammunition in a search last Thursday of von Brunn's car, which was parked outside of the Washington, D.C., museum during the shooting a day earlier.
Investigators said they also found a notebook in the car with handwritten notes saying, "The Holocaust is a lie. Obama was created by Jews. Obama does what his Jew owners tell him to do. Jews captured America's money. Jews control the mass media."
Von Brunn faces murder charges in the death of Stephen T. Johns and remains hospitalized after being hit in the face by guards who returned fire.
The FBI has said he is likely to survive. A hearing is set for Monday for an update on his condition. No date has been set for von Brunn's initial court appearance.
