The grove and stream bordering my back yard:

A stroll in the real forest. It will look more cheerful in a couple of weeks:

And finally, this amazing forest! The ground was completely covered with Ramsløg (Allium ursinum) spreading an intoxicating scent of garlic, and the white trees were beautifully crooked. It had a sort of magical ambience. I could have stayed there the whole day.

Moors Valley Country Park, (officially Moors Valley Country Park and Forest,)
is a Country Park situated in Ashley Heath, Dorset, ten miles north of Bournemouth,
on the border with Hampshire, in the south of England.

The park has adventure play equipment, a tree top walkway, a 'Go Ape!' high ropes course
a visitor centre and restaurant.
There is also a narrow gauge steam railway (the Moors Valley Railway), a golf course,
lakes, cycle hire, waymarked walks and cycle routes.
A ranger service provides a wide range of events and an educational programme.

The Moors Valley Railway is a 71⁄4 inch narrow gauge passenger railway,
in the Moors Valley Country Park at Ashley Heath, Dorset, England near Ringwood in Hampshire.

There are 17 steam engines and 2 diesel engines.
The railway is fully signalled, with two signal boxes,
one in a Great Western Railway style and one in a British Rail Southern Region style.

The latter box also contains a mini lever frame and push button panel, for the control of the Lakeside area.
The railway was constructed at its present location in 1985/86 and opened to the public in July 1986,
after the closure in 1985 of its predecessor at Tucktonia in nearby Christchurch, which had run since 1979.

There's also a mini childrens steam train encircling Poole Park in Dorset too,
which has mini golf, mini boats, mini cars, childrens science learning centre, swans,
and plenty more there.

Finally, behind this house, there's a grass road. Go up 50 metres and my neighbour's house is there. To the left, a gate, and the rest of the road turns to soil. That's the beginning of our property:

I forgot to mention in this post that the top pictures are of where I grew up in Bournemouth, the hotels overlooking the beach, (there's 7 miles of clean sand there and award-winning gardens,) plus the Jurassic Coastline between Dorset and Devon which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and shows proof of life dating to over 185 million years via the continuous fossil finds there. Compton Acres in Dorset has Italian villas and Italian gardens in it. It's in south-west England. The top pictures are mostly of Bournemouth gardens, the Winter Gardens, (there's some palm trees in Bournemouth too,) and the other pictures are of the Lake District in Cumbria of north-west England and the Norfolk Broads in Anglia, East England.

Something I like about the nature of my country is that being a small island, we're never far from the countryside or the seas. The main island is surrounded by the Celtic Sea, the English Channel Sea, the North Sea, the Irish Sea, and the North Atlantic Ocean waves off the coast of Cornwall is nice for surfing.

The weather is mostly mild (I love the rain and dislike the sun, so the weather is actually something I like a lot, but it doesn't rain so much in the south as in the north.) We have 4 different seasons without having very severely cold winters or overly-baking hot summers/droughts (although we do still have heatwaves sometimes which last for about a week or two during the summer,) and sometimes the winters can be very cold and snowy, but in general, it's not as hot or cold as some other countries.

We don't get massive earthquakes, or big tornadoes, fire tornadoes, huge bush fires, massive thunderstorms, massive hurricanes, avalanches, and the British wildlife is mostly tame; even the spiders here are harmless and squirrels won't hunt you down in packs. :P

Also I love the mixture of old and new architecture; lots of National Trust places, preserved ancient sites, some preserved romantic steam trains, countryside cottages and pretty and charming villages, and lots of historic cultural sites, but also 21st century architecture and parks in cities like London.

Wales (a country with more castles than any other country) and Scotland (see Grahams video posted earlier) have lots of naturally beautiful scenery in these countries on our main island too.

UK's 'oldest oak tree', Pontfadog Oak in North Wales was blown over by winds.

A 1,200-year-old oak tree, thought to be the UK's oldest,
was blown over by strong winds in April, 2013.

The Pontfadog Oak had been growing near Chirk in Wrexham, north Wales, since the year 802!

But gusts of around 60mph toppled the old oak,
with locals reporting an "almighty crash and a bang".

Its trunk measured nearly 13m around,
was hollow and was big enough to fit six people sat around a table!

The Pontfadog Oak before it was blown over

The tree is believed to have been a point for Welsh princes to rally their troops.

Tree hunter Rob McBride, who measures trees and records them,
said there was talk of trying to put the tree back up:
"they would have to take the top off and then re-erect it, which can be done."

The Woodland Trust said that better protection is needed for ancient trees.

The Eden Project, Cornwall

The Eden Project (Cornish: Edenva) is a visitor attraction in Cornwall, England, United Kingdom.
Inside the artificial biodomes are plants that are collected from all around the world.
The project is located in a reclaimed Kaolinite pit, located 2 km (1.2 mi) from the town of St Blazey
and 5 kilometres (3 mi) from the larger town of St Austell, Cornwall.

The complex is dominated by two huge enclosures consisting of adjoining domes that house thousands of plant species,
and each enclosure emulates a natural biome.
The domes consist of hundreds of hexagonal and pentagonal, inflated, plastic cells supported by steel frames.
The first dome simulates a tropical environment, and the second a Mediterranean environment.

The name Eden Project stems from the 1994 TV series Earth 2.

Once into the attraction, there is a meandering path with views of the two biomes,
planted landscapes, including vegetable gardens,
and sculptures that include a giant bee and towering robot created from old electrical appliances.

The Tropical Biome, covers 1.56 hectares (3.9 acres) and measures 55 metres (180 ft) high,
100 metres (328 ft) wide and 200 metres (656 ft) long.
It is used for tropical plants, such as fruiting banana trees, coffee, rubber and giant bamboo,
and is kept at a tropical temperature and moisture level.

The Mediterranean Biome covers 0.654 hectares (1.6 acres) and measures 35 metres (115 ft) high,
65 metres (213 ft) wide and 135 metres (443 ft) long.
It houses familiar warm temperate and arid plants such as olives and grape vines and various sculptures.

The Outdoor Biome (which is not covered) represents the temperate regions of the world
with plants such as tea, lavender, hops, hemp and sunflowers.

The domes provide diverse growing conditions, and many plants are on display.

The Eden Project includes environmental education
focusing on the interdependence of plants and people;
plants are labelled with their medicinal uses.

The massive amounts of water required to create the humid conditions of the Tropical Biome,
and to serve the toilet facilities, are all sanitised rain water
that would otherwise collect at the bottom of the quarry.

The only mains water used is for hand washing and for cooking.

The complex also uses Green Tariff Electricity – the energy comes from one
of the many wind turbines in Cornwall, which were among the first in Europe.

Controversially, one of the companies the Eden Project currently partners
with is the British mining company Rio Tinto Group.

In December 2010 the Eden Project received permission to build a geothermal
electricity plant which will generate approx 4MWe,
enough to supply Eden and about 5000 households.

Old Harry Rocks and The Needles, Dorset.

http://www.rgs.org/OurWork/Schools/Fieldwork+and+local+learning/Planning+your+fieldtrip/Fieldwork+locations/Jurassic+Coast+of+Dorset+and+East+Devon/Old+Harry+Rocks.htm

Old Harry Rocks is the first major point of interest along the UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Jurassic Coast
which covers the coast of Dorset and East Devon to Orcombe Point near Exmouth.

http://i.picasion.com/resize80/257e2ea1e26f93937dd6ca1f11e99347.jpg

Old Harry and his wife are chalk stacks and stumps respectively
and were at one time part of a chalk seam
that stretched from Purbeck to the Isle of Wight which included the Needles.

With the rise of water after the last Ice Age the sea took its toll on the chalk cliffs.

http://i.picasion.com/resize80/ffc5b96c5ff0033fcd959fa753766e08.jpg

The chalk itself is a soft, white, porous sedimentary rock,
a form of limestone composed of the mineral calcite.

It forms under relatively deep marine conditions from the gradual accumulation
of minute calcite plates (coccoliths) shed from trillions of micro-organisms called coccolithophores.

It is common to find flint nodules embedded in chalk
which are thought to be the silicon remains of sponge beds.
The appearance of the chalk from the promontory at Old Harry
is quite regular with the bedding planes and joints almost looking like laid breeze blocks.

http://i.picasion.com/resize80/39bb1da73fadd8cb3e07b1172c6dd5b4.jpg

The chalk strata at Old Harry are on a horizontal plane as clearly shown
by the the sand and grit line that runs through No Mans Land,
Old Harry and on through the Needles,
whilst within two kilometres south the chalk strata flows on a vertical plane at Ballard fault.

The cause of this fault is in dispute but it is probaly the result of the African and European plate collision
some 30 million years age that also caused the Lulworth Crumple.

http://i.picasion.com/resize80/ee8b3829808c50ac4a4b9266d99b9c10.jpg

The creation of Old Harry starts at a headland with the sea exploiting a crack
in the chalk joints and slowly creating a cave.

As the sea gradually eroded along the joints and bedding planes the cave
eventually created an arch which then collapsed to leave the stack of Old Harry,
No Mans Land and the gap of St Lucas' Leap.

In the 1770's, people could still walk from the headland of Handfast Point to Old Harry.
Old Harry's wife was still a stack until her eventual collapse in 1896 to render her a stump.
Due to the horizontal strata the wave cut platforms still provide a footing
for the stack and stump at low tide and to a lesser extent the two pinnacles to the south.

Looking south towards Peveril Point in the distance.
In the foreground are the Pinacles known as the haystack and wedge respectively.

http://i.picasion.com/resize80/865515fd4f71adceb0989ba28a00d966.jpghttp://i.picasion.com/resize80/e50c8cbba132e7f5ebed3508b0f67f07.jpg

Due to the isolation of the stacks and the steep cliffs they have been colonised
by breeding sea birds and also by peregrine falcons.
The geology of the area gives rise to chalk grassland and associated plants, flowers,
insects and rare birds such as the skylark.

The area is managed by the National Trust to encourage species diversity by mowing and grazing.
The names of the areas owe themselves to tales of smugglers, the devil,
greyhounds and even pre-Roman weddings.

The Needles (Natural Wonders)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Needles

The Needles is a row of three distinctive stacks of chalk that rise out of the sea
off the western extremity of the Isle of Wight, UK, close to Alum Bay.

The Needles Lighthouse stands at the outer, western end of the formation.
Built in 1859, the lighthouse has been automated since 1994.

The Needles from the cliffs inshore at The Needles Battery showing the Needles Lighthouse

The formation takes its name from a fourth needle-shaped pillar
called Lot's Wife that collapsed in a storm in 1764.
The remaining rocks are not at all needle-like, but the name has stuck.

http://i.picasion.com/resize80/7414712ab46949e1d0dc4ed175f6d98c.jpg

The Needles were featured on the 2005 TV programme Seven Natural Wonders
as one of the wonders of Southern England.

http://i.picasion.com/resize80/7f838a796a905cf0ffe56d90202b033c.jpg
The Needles – View from the experimental rocket launching station

Some controversy has been raised about the actual shape
of the "Lot's Wife" stone column, that allegedly collapsed in 1764.

A drawing of The Needles by Dutch landscape artist Lambert Doomer (1624–1700)
made in 1646 depicts a rock formation with much stouter shape than that
shown in Isaac Taylor's 1759 "one inch" map of Hampshire.

The Doomer etching is contained in Atlas Blaeu-Van der Hem (published ca. 1662),
which is in the Austrian National Library in Vienna.
It is not clear from these drawings what transpired.

The World Heritage Jurassic Coast Showing 185 Million Years Of History

http://i.picasion.com/resize80/454d897a5a0c964e3fbeaded61470f85.jpg

The Jurassic Coast is England's first natural World Heritage Site.
Covering 95 miles of coastline from East Devon to Dorset in south west England,
displaying 185 million years of the Earth's history.

Durdle Door (below)
http://i.picasion.com/resize80/0741f0e9d87537631e0486b21fc6ce16.jpg

World Heritage status was achieved because the Jurassic Coast
provides a unique insight into Earth Sciences.
It shows a geological ‘walk through time’ spanning
the Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous periods.
World Heritage Sites are places of ‘outstanding universal value’ selected by UNESCO.

The Jurassic Coast is a World Heritage Site
on the English Channel coast of southern England.
It stretches from Orcombe Point near Exmouth in East Devon
to Old Harry Rocks near Swanage in East Dorset, a distance of 155 kilometres (96 mi).

Chartered in 2001, the Jurassic coast was the second wholly natural
World Heritage Site to be designated in the United Kingdom.

Its entire length can be walked on the South West Coast Path.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Icaq4b31cIE

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2rkmhrIpYP8

The site was featured on the television programme Seven Natural Wonders
as one of the wonders of the South West (of the UK),
and in a 2005 poll of Radio Times readers,
the Jurassic Coast was named as the fifth-greatest natural wonder in Britain.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3eMUdqSu2Kc

The Jurassic Coast consists of Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous cliffs,
spanning the Mesozoic Era, documenting 180 million years of geological history.

The site shows excellent examples of landforms,
including the natural arch at Durdle Door,
the cove and limestone folding at Lulworth Cove and an island, the Isle of Portland.

Chesil Beach is a fine example of both a tombolo
(a deposition landform in which an island is attached to the mainland
by a narrow piece of land such as a spit or bar)
and a storm beach (a beach affected by particularly fierce waves).

Chesil Beach, a short distance from Weymouth in Dorset
is an ideal place to watch the sun set.
http://i.picasion.com/resize80/0bb7bc73f9a6868a1f0222d2dfd62610.jpg

The site has stretches of both concordant and discordant coastlines.

Due to the quality of the varied geology,
the site is the subject of international field studies.

This area was home to Mary Anning,
a palaeontologist who studied the fossils
of the coastline around Lyme Regis
and discovered the first complete Ichthyosaur fossil at the Spittles.

The highest point on the Jurassic Coast,
and on the entire south coast of Britain,
is Golden Cap at 191 metres (627 ft).

Millions of years of history
http://www.visit-dorset.com/about-the-area/jurassic-coast

Dorset’s Jurassic Coast was granted its UNESCO status for its outstanding geology
with parts dating back over 185 million years.

For this reason it is a hot bed for fossil hunting with hundreds of specimens
having been unearthed from the cliffs and beaches.

Find your own piece of history
http://www.visit-dorset.com/about-the-area/jurassic-coast

There are many opportunities to take part in fossil hunting along the Jurassic coast
many of which are based around the stomping ground
of possibly the most famous fossil hunter Mary Anning in Lyme Regis and Charmouth.

Here you can take part in an supervised fossil hunting guided walk
and learn the skills that Mary developed over 100 years ago.

Walk in the footsteps of giants
http://www.visit-dorset.com/about-the-area/jurassic-coast

The Jurassic Coast is living breathing history walk with evidence
of times gone by when giants roamed the earth waiting to be found.

This stretch of coastline provides some of the most jaw dropping scenery
and views that will live long in your heart
and is a favourite destination for walkers and nature lovers alike.

As the Jurassic Coast is roughly 95 miles in total length, there are plenty of things to do,
attractions to visit, events to see, towns & villages to visit.
Luxury hotels, quirky bed and breakfasts, exclusive holiday cottages,
family friendly campsites, caravan parks and holiday parks are all in the area.

The Jurassic Coast also has an amazing array of places to eat
such as restaurants cooking freshly caught seafoods and serving Mediterranean dishes,
cafes and gastro pubs, many with fantastic views of the coast.

If you think the Jurassic Coast is all about fossils, think again!
The area has the best beaches, gardens and golf courses in the UK.

Geologists called it Paratethys, or Panonian Sea, warm and shallow sea similar to today's Mediterranean sea. Large portions of Europe were submerged in water millions of years ago. As a matter of fact, the continent’s soil served as a bottom of an ocean called Tethys. Time continued to pass, and the sea vanished as well, leaving a large valley in Europe’s central region. However, some underwater faunal species left their fossilized remains, leaving us with proofs of their existence, and hints what life looked like in the archaic sea. As eastern Croatia’s territory belongs to Panonian valley, it is abundant with these geological findings. Its oldest layers hide numerous faunal and floral remains.

Karst soil is a result of destruction and dissolution of limestone rocks (calcium carbonate) in water rich with carbon-dioxide (CO2) and repeated sedimentation of dissolved material.
45 % of surface of Croatia is karst soil. It spreads through Istria, Dalmatia, Dinaric and mountainous regions and Lika.

Hengistbury Head, Dorset (one of my favourite childhood places)

Hengistbury Head is a scenic headland near Bournemouth, Dorset, South West England.
The website link below outlines her structure, her long rich history
and the continuing fight against erosion.

There is a parking guide and sections on Stanpit Marsh
and Steamer Point, which with Hengistbury Head
form an integral set of nature reserves around Christchurch Harbour
and are all designated Sites of Special Scientific Interest.

Hengistbury Head is a headland jutting into the English Channel
between Bournemouth and Mudeford in the English county of Dorset.

It is a site of international importance in terms of its archaeology
and is scheduled as an Ancient Monument.

Declared a Local Nature Reserve in 1990,
the head and its surroundings form part of the Christchurch Harbour Site of Special Scientific Interest.
It is also a Special Area of Conservation, Special Protection Area,
an Environmentally Sensitive Area and a Site of Nature Conservation Interest.
The name "Hengistbury Head" refers to the immediate area; the elevated portion is called Warren Hill.

There has been human activity on the site since the Upper Palaeolithic;
during the Victorian era, it was heavily quarried,
and in recent years tourism has become significant – it receives over a million visitors annually.

The various habitats on the Head provide a home for many plants, birds and insects,
some of them rare and critically endangered. Erosion remains a threat to the site,
although long-term projects are intended to secure it for the future.

Not much nature in its wild state here unfortunately. Here are the location of protected areas:

But some of our most spectacular landscapes are in the Azores Islands in my opinion:

:rose: So beautiful, they've called it the Field of Dreams:
Britain's biggest wildflower meadow comes into full bloom with a burst of colour :rose2:

Britain's biggest wildflower garden has finally burst into bloom with a spectacular
60 different brightly coloured species carpeting the landscape.

Talented Brian Herrick, 59, and wife Denise, 61, have spent years turning this once unsightly and rubbish-strewn field
at the edge of their Somerset estate into their little piece of heaven,
which they've named the 'Field of Dreams'.

The couple, who bought estate Barcroft Hall ten years ago
now have the biggest wildflower garden in the UK,
boasting varieties from all around the world.

Colourful: The bright orange Ursinia is one of the flowers in bloom
at the Field of Dreams along with the much loved golden poppy

Their 'Field of Dreams' masterpiece was inspired by visits to Kew Gardens,
Table Mountain National Park and Kirstenbosch Gadrens, both in Cape Town, South Africa.

It was feared that the variable weather would affect the flowers so the couple were thrilled
to see the first tiny blooms of Californian Bluebells and Goldfields three weeks ago.

Since then, other species have been carpeting the field,
which lies on the stunning 85 acre estate in South Petherton, Somerset, south west England.
They have also planted a Heart of Gold -
a one acre wild flower heart to celebrate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee.

This weekend, visitors will be able to stroll among the sweet smelling flowers
for the first time this year, when the Field of Dreams opens for 2012.

Buzzing with nature: The wild flower meadow is an excellent environment for butterflies and bees
and is also popular with the public drawing 4,000 people last year

http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2012/06/29/article-0-13D8D1FD000005DC-624_470x423.jpghttp://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2012/06/29/article-0-13D8D28C000005DC-832_470x423.jpg
Eye-catching: Purple-coloured Scorpion Weed and the Gazania
were planted in the field when work began on the project in 2010

Last year, the meadow was so popular it drew more than 4,000 members of the public
and the couple were moved at the reaction from visitors,
some of whom became tearful at the site of the extraordinary colourful display.

The Herrick's began work on the two acre piece of wasteland in 2010.
Unsightly buildings were removed and tons of rubbish and waste were taken away.

They then rebuilt the road banks and new hedges and trees were planted,
before the land was mole ploughed for drainage and harrowed to create a fine seed bed.

This year, the couple also planted a field of packed full of sunflowers,
just behind the Field of Dreams,
for every person who lost their lives in last year's devastating Japan tsunami.

They were inspired to create the field, which they've called A Ray of Sunshine,
after a recent visit to the disaster-hit country,
where they were inspired to create four wildflower meadows in the north-east of the country.

Enterprising: The owners of Barcroft Hall Estate in South Petherton
purchased and renovated over two acres of disused land to create the 'Field of Dreams'

Bright: Scarlet Flax and Mountain Garland are among the flowers carpet the field
and now the Herricks have been creating wildflower meadows in Japan

Around 16,000 people died when a magnitude 9.0 earthquake
unleased a wall of water which hit Japan's north-east coast.

It is even more poignant as the couple became near victims of the 2004 tsunami in Thailand.

The conservationists were on holiday with their children in Krabi, Thailand when the country was hit
by the giant wave caused by an earthquake. More than 230,000 people died in 14 countries.

Harmony: Scorpion Weed, right, grows happily alongside the Spurred Snapdragon
in the wild flower meadow which is home to 60 species

Mr Herrick said: 'The philosophy of the Field of Dreams in England was that in the current climate
with such strains on families and especially the elderly,
everyone needs and should have a little piece of heaven
to promote harmony, goodwill and understanding.

'This ideal has now been transported to Japan and we sincerely hope
it will help those families who have been subjected to this terrible disaster.'

Entry is free to the Field of Dreams but visitors are asked to make a donation
to one of the couple's chosen local charities.
