These exclusive images show what London would look like if plans for a Formula 1 street race in the city come to fruition.

The starting grid would be placed on the Mall in front of Buckingham Palace, with drivers racing around the 5.1km (3.2-mile) West End course 59 times.

British Formula 1 champions Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button have both been involved in designing the circuit and will help showcase the plans at an event in Pall Mall tonight.

Drivers and spectators would take in a host of landmarks, including Trafalgar Square and Piccadilly Circus – trumping rival street races in Monte Carlo and Singapore thanks to the capital’s iconic backdrop.

The race – called the London GP – was conceived by the Santander bank, which sponsors the British Grand Prix at Silverstone.

London GP could even be held at night to create a carnival atmosphere and it is hoped the event would attract 300,000 spectators and generate tens of millions of pounds.

‘There’s a tremendous appetite for Formula 1 in the UK – more than anywhere else – and London is more than capable of hosting world class events whether they be the marathon, the jubilee or rock concerts in Hyde Park,’ said Santander spokesman Nav Sidhu.
‘Putting a temporary Formula 1 circuit into a city like London would involve serious challenges – but every single one has been met.’

The course would see drivers racing at full throttle for 75 per cent of a lap, with speeds of up to 197mph reached down straight sections such as Constitution Hill.

‘Drivers find street races significantly more exciting,’ added Mr Sidhu.

Santander insisted the race – which would not take place for several years – would complement and not supersede the existing British Grand Prix.

A four minute computer-generated film of the course starring Hamilton and Button will be available to view from 8pm tonight at http://www.facebook.com/lewisandjensonsantander
