I love all animals, but wolves the most. They have so many admirable traits that it would take me for ever to name them all. Suffice it to say, the wolf is the natures most magnificent creation. The wolf is the sacred animal of the Slavs. Here it is to you the most perfect creature! :)

Post pictures, stories, legends anything that pertains to the wolves.

First off surprise, surprise the magnificent Arctic Wolves:

You wanna know what love is learn it from the wolves. This is the most beautiful love story there is, really tragic but it will teach you what true love really is. See what no man can do but wolf can die of the broken heart. Lobo you were the real man, oops I meant not to offend you, a real wolf! Live free or die!

Wolves are sacred animal of ancient Turks. There are many personal names, tribal names, symbols and arms related with wolves in our history. Some of the personal names are still being used by Turkish/Turkic peoples today.

Khan Kubrat of early Bulgars is an example for that. Kubrat is actually a derivation of the word "Kurt" meaning wolf in Turkish.

Actually wolves was also the sacred animal of Germanic peoples too but after their christianization, wolves was one of the prime subjects of the demonization campaign of Roman church in the name of erasing their former so-called pagan beliefs. Thats why it`s quite common to find many anti-wolf stories in the early French/Latin literature in 13-14th century. Already after some time, wolves became a prime symbol of villains in christian European culture.

It seems they have traveled to Armenia :)

I love wolves too. But their number has increased in Armenia and they attack the domestic animals in some villages and appear at the houses of people even at daytime. There's a resolution of the Government to grant 100000 drams for each head of a killed wolf. It is prohibited in Armenia to kill any wild animal, except for wolves.

Here is a short story of Lobo, the noble, amazing wolf, who was noble to the very end. His story changed human hearts. Lobo taught me almost as much about being noble, love, loving freedom as the best of men. Watch the long version which I posted on page 2 to get the whole story. This story is simply amazing.

I'm guessing here that you haven't watched the video about the great el Lobo on page 2. Wolves can love like no other creature does. They are very smart but that's just part of their personality, there is much more to them than just brains. ;)

It's not about love. They just haven't specifically evolved to understand the emotions of humans. I'm sure they can love fine, just like I, as somebody with autism, can love. Both wolves and I just find it very hard to read people, which I find quite similar to them. :)

Well they can't read people and are highly logical. I'd say that would be closer to a lack of cognitive empathy rather than effective empathy (sociopathy/anti-social personality disorder) But those words only work on humans. ;) Dogs have been bred to rely on human decisions and emotions on the other-hand and use methods like eye-tracking and certain vocal patterns to "converse" with humans. They are also more mindful and less destructive (unintentionally.)

http://blogs.scientificamerican.com/thoughtful-animal/2012/04/30/dogs-but-not-wolves-use-humans-as-tools/

Sometime between fifteen and thirty thousand years ago, probably in the Middle East, the long, protracted process of domestication began to alter the genetic code of the wolf, eventually leaving us with the animals we know and love as domestic dogs. While there are several different theories as to exactly how dog domestication began, what is clear is that there were some wolves who were less fearful of humans than others. Over time, those wolves were incorporated into early human settlements. Perhaps humans and early dogs learned to hunt cooperatively – both species hunt primarily by outrunning their prey – or perhaps early dogs instead learned that they could avoid hunting by scavenging on the leftovers of human hunting parties. Whatever the initial reason for the incorporation of wolves into human society, there their descendents still remain.

By sharing an environment with humans, dogs left behind their ancestral environment and found a place in a new one. No longer would they have to hunt to eat; humans would come to provide for their care and feeding. It is probably no accident that the relationship between dogs and their owners mirrors the attachment relationship between parents and their children, behaviorally and physiologically. Indeed, humans who have strong bonds with their dogs have higher levels of oxytocin in their urine than those with weaker bonds.

But it isn’t only the source of their food that changed as wolves became dogs; their entire social ecology changed. Instead of sharing social space primarily with other wolves, dogs came to treat humans as social partners. This is one of the critical differences between a domesticate and a wild animal that is simply habituated to the presence of humans. Domestication is a genetic process; habituation is an experiential one. Domestication alters nature, habituation is nurture.

Several years ago, scientists at Eotvos University in Budapest wanted to determine whether the social-cognitive differences among dogs and wolves was primarily genetic or experiential. To do this, they hand-raised a group of dog puppies and a group of wolf pups from birth, resulting in roughly equivalent experiences. Any differences between the two groups’ social cognitive skills, then, would be attributable to genetics.

Wolf and dog pups were raised by humans starting four to six days after birth, before their eyes had fully opened. For the first months of their lives, the wolf and dog pups were in close contact with their human foster parents nearly twenty-four hours per day. They lived in the homes of their caregivers and slept with them at night. They were bottle-fed, and starting on the fourth or fifth week of life, hand fed with solid food. Their human caregivers carried them in a pouch so that the wolf pups and dog puppies could participate in as much of their daily activities as possible: traveling on public transportation, attending classes, visiting friends, and so on. Each of the pups had extensive experience meeting unfamiliar humans, and at least twice a week, they were socialized with each other as well as with unfamiliar adult dogs. The guiding principle for the hand-rearing paradigm, according to the researchers, was based not upon competition or aggressive interactions, but “to behave rather like a mother than a dominant conspecific.”

Would wolves, having been raised by humans, demonstrate social-cognitive skills that approached the sophistication of dogs? Or is social-cognitive aptitude encoded in dogs’ genes, a direct result of domestication?

In one simple task, a plate of food was presented to the wolf pups (at 9 weeks) or to the dog puppies (both at 5 weeks and at 9 weeks). However, the food was inaccessible to the animals; human help would be required to access it. The trick to getting the food was simple: all the animals had to do was make eye contact with the experimenter, and he or she would reward the dog with the food from the plate. Initially, all the animals attempted in vain to reach the food. However, by the second minute of testing, dogs began to look towards the humans. This increased over time and by the fourth minute there was a statistical difference. Dogs were more likely to initiate eye contact with the human experimenter than the wolves were. This is no small feat; initiating eye contact with the experimenter requires that the animal refocus its attention from the food to the human. Not only did the wolf pups not spontaneously initiate eye contact with the human experimenter, but they also failed to learn that eye contact was the key to solving their problem.

http://blogs.scientificamerican.com/thoughtful-animal/files/2012/04/dog-wolf-eye-contact-e1335760979508.jpg

A second experiment, conducted when the wolves and puppies were between four and eleven months old, found similar results. Each animal was presented, in different testing sessions, with two different types of tasks. First, each of the wolves and dogs was trained to retrieve a food reward by opening a bin (in one task) or pulling a rope (in the second task). Then, after they had mastered the task, they were presented with an impossible version of the same problem. After attempting to retrieve the food, the dogs looked back towards the human caregivers. The wolves did no such thing. Dogs spontaneously initiated a communicative interaction with the humans earlier, and maintained it for longer periods of time, than did the human-reared wolves, who all but ignored their human caregivers.

http://blogs.scientificamerican.com/thoughtful-animal/files/2012/04/wolf-dog-impossible-task.jpg

Both dogs and wolves were equally adept at learning the two tasks, indicating that there were no group differences in terms of motivation or physical abilities, but large differences emerged when given impossible problems to solve. In both impossible tasks, as well as in the earlier eye contact experiment, dogs instinctively shifted their attention away from the food and towards the humans. Despite the fact that they had been fully socialized, the wolves treated each of the situations as physical problems rather than social ones. Only rarely did they ever attempt to engage in a communicative problem-solving interaction with a human. It’s not that wolves are unintelligent; it’s quite the opposite, in fact. Wolves are cooperative hunters, skilled at negotiating within their own social networks. It’s just that even after being raised by humans, wolves simply do not see humans as potential social partners. The dogs, however, quite rapidly took a social approach to solving each problem they were given. In one sense, this is a remarkable example of tool use. Only in this case, the humans were the tools, and the dogs the tool-users.

I will, I'm currently going through a few documentaries right now actually. So it's next up in my list, after I finish one on genetics.

Having said that, I'd imagine a sub-set of the wolf population can attune to humans, and it is precisely that sub-set that was prone to domestication and hence became dogs.

There is a scientist in Georgia who lived with wolf pack for a few years, Jason Badridze. He studied wolves from inside of their family-pack as no other man ever did. Here is an article about him:

It's sad, but the noble nature of the wolves is something we can learn much from and I personally have. It's their nobility that makes me appreciate them so much. Maybe I was a wolf in my previous life. ;)

Hi
Great to see the wolf thread, some great pics shared here.

Anyone in UK/England may be interested to know that in Hampshire, the UK Wolf Conservation trust house a number of wolves. Shame to say they are in pens/cages really, but it does give a glimpse into the remnants of the wolf.

There is also a chap in Scotland who is trying to set up a 'wildlife park' where the wolves can be free once more, though there is a degree (small or large I do not know) of opposition to this and to date, nothing is set to occur.

Cheers

Paul

I remember one Spetsnaz guy said: 'Everyone think he is a hero who will do his best in an extreme situation, but when shooting begins you'll just shit your pants and will perform at the bottom of your abilities. That's why you have to train hard: to raise that bottom, so when shooting starts you can at least do something other than panic'.

Exactly, no man can know for sure how he'll react in a stressful situation no matter how brave he thinks he is. Most men will weep than throw themselves headfirst into flying bullets.

This inner wolf thing reminds me of story with comical connotations :) Me and my cousin were at my grandparents for the summer, it was june 1998 and both of us went to our uncle's to watch Brazil 3-0 Morroco. Once the game was over both of us headed back to our grandparents house, it was very late (10 or 11 PM) and obviously dark. As we were walking down the road I noticed a group of drunk men standing by the side of the road, my cousin was to busy analyzing Ronaldo's great display so he noticed nothing. When we were about to pass them one man shouted: "stop right there" and tried to grab me. This was a defining moment for me because the inner rabbit kicked in and I ran like Forrest Gump :D If someone would've timed me I would probably be the world record holder for 100, 200 and 400m :D Nobody said anything to me but I was always ashamed that I left my cousin behind (who by the way got a slap from that man), my only excuse is that I was 12 years old but that wasn't much of a comfort so I promised myself that I would never run again.

A wolf is a Chechen's best friend (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chechen_wolf).

http://www.waynakh.com/tr/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/bayrakvearma.gif

It's on the Chechen insignia and is the symbol of the Chechen nation. Also featured on the flag of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria, not the ugly one adopted by the Pro-Russian government which is in use today.

Hence, characteristics of the wolf are also frequently compared to the Chechen people in a poetic sense, including the most famous line that members of the Chechen nation are "free and equal like wolves".
According to the Chechen ethos, the wolf is the only animal that would enter into an unequal match, making up for any disadvantage by its agility, wit, courage and tenacity. If it loses the battle, it lies down facing the foe in full acceptance of its fate—Chechen poise equivalent to the famed British ‘stiff upper lip’.

Wolf definitely phased out from France in the 1930's, but they've been coming back from Italy for a few decades now, with the decline of pastoral life. They've settled on our side of the Alps but they've been spotted all around.
As far North as Western Lorraine and West over the Rhone valley (which would be theoretically a huge obstacle with its high speed train line, it's highway and its very high urban density, but wolf don't care) in the South of the Massif Central (that's right, wolves in the Gévaudan) and South at the bottom of the Pyrenees.

A Native American grandfather was talking to his grandson about how he felt. He said, "I feel as if I have two wolves fighting in my heart. One wolf is the vengeful, angry, violent one. The other wolf is the loving, compassionate one." The grandson asked him, "Which wolf will win the fight in your heart, Grandfather?" The grandfather answered, "The one I feed."

Wolves are indeed beautiful creatures. This is the Maned Wolf, known as "Lobo Guará", it is the largest wolf of South America, found in Central and Southern Brazil:

Rare Red Wolf Born in Captivity at Land Between The Lakes (http://www.clarksvilleonline.com/2014/06/18/rare-red-wolf-born-captivity-land-lakes/)

Golden Pond, KY - Land Between The Lakes National Recreation Area is pleased to announce the birth of a ¾ pound female red wolf on May 2nd,2014. The Woodlands Nature Station’s captive, endangered red wolves are the proud parents.

The new female pup is just now emerging from her den and stretching her legs followed by two very attentive and nervous parents. She will remain with her parents for at least 18 months and then be transferred to a zoo or nature center to start her own pack.

http://www.clarksvilleonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/Red-Wolf-480x360.jpg (http://www.clarksvilleonline.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/06/Red-Wolf.jpg)

New Red Wolf Pup at Nature Station sticks close to Mom as she ventures out from her den to explore her surroundings. On May 2, 2014, her proud parents welcomed her into the world weighing only 3/4 of a pound.

“As she gets older and braver, the little pup will become more visible. Right now she is still hard to see,” commented Darrin Samborski, facility manager for the Nature Station.

The Nature Station has been involved with the Red Wolf Recovery Program since 1991, in partnership with the US Fish & Wildlife Service. Seven out of forty captive breeding sites were selected to have puppies. The Nature Station was selected this year to preserve the genetic line of the male wolf, who has reached the age of 13. Red wolves usually do not live past 14 years of age.

Red wolves once dominated southern forests prior to European settlement. As farmsteads and agriculture changed the landscape, red wolves quickly disappeared from many parts of the South. There are no red wolves in the wild at Land Between The Lakes and there are no plans to re-introduce them.

“Coyotes and humans are direct competitors for resources with the shy red wolf. They can only exist in areas where both are low in population,” said lead naturalist, John Pollpeter.

Today, red wolves can only be found in a small, isolated population in the northeast portion of North Carolina.

10 Monogamous Animals That Just Want To Settle Down

http://mentalfloss.com/sites/default/files/styles/insert_main_wide_image/public/177533648.jpg

It's usually "'til death do us part" for wolves. In the wild, they start breeding by the age of two. Mated pairs build their wolf pack by having a new litter every year. (Most wolves don't experience reproductive senescence, either, and can have babies until they die.) So when you see a lone wolf, have some sympathy. He's single and looking for love, mourning his dead partner, or, in extreme cases, nursing a breakup with the pack.

I don't see how starving would be a reason since wolfs are not edible.

I hunt it for the trophy,to have a cool wolf skin and headdress.

It is also in local tradition to kill a wolf and have its head.By slaying the beast and taking its skin you are devouring its power and making it your own.Same goes for bears.

No, Humulus Lupulus is just the latin name of the hop and it sounds like lupus.

Wolves are such beautiful creatures. They've been around longer than humans.
This lovely video shows a lady being reunited with a wolf pack. The wolves are very happy to see her.

When wolves hunt, they prey on the weak and the sick, and preserve the strong in nature. This helps the eco-system.

This feature-length documentary from Bill Mason imparts his affection for the big northern timber wolves and the pure-white Arctic wolves. Filmed over three years in the Northwest Territories, British Columbia, the High Arctic and his home near the Gatineau Hills in Quebec, Mason sets out to dispel the myth of the bloodthirsty wolf. Going beyond the wolf's natural habitat, Mason relocated three young wolves to his own property and was able to film tribal customs, mating and birth. As a result, Cry of the Wild offers viewers access to moments in wildlife never before seen on film.
Good documentary, 3rd section is kind of stupid though, a person who knows so much about wolves goes on to tame bunch of wolves, let's them out into the wild and is then surprised they can't hunt down anything...

No. Human creatures are the worst pests who ruin nature for their own selfish entertainment, and cause the most pollution and destruction to millions of other living species on this planet.

Part of the beauty of a natural and free wolf is that it's wild and not a domesticated sheep!

Beautiful and stunning wolves have been on this planet far longer than human mammals.

A wise wolf in nature never follows the herd-mentality of domesticated sheep.

Wolves have managed to survive for longer than human creatures - despite the barbaric ways of beastly mankind towards everything else that's living on this planet.

Wild wolf cubs born in Rome for the first time in 100 years

The wolf is the symbolic animal of Rome, a city founded by two brothers who were raised by a she-wolf - or so the legend goes.

And now, for the first time in over 100 years, newly-born wolves have been spotted living just outside the Italian capital.

Hidden cameras in the Oasi LIPU Castel di Guido, a wildlife sanctuary spanning 180 hectares, have snapped pictures of an entire family of wolves: mother, father, and two cubs. The male adult has been named Romulus by researchers, a nod to the city's legendary founder, and since he was first sighted, scientists have been studying the animals through video footage and analysis of excrement to determine their diet.

Inbreeding in Scandinavian wolves is worse than we thought

Everyone knew that the tiny population of wolves in Norway and Sweden was inbred. Using precise genetic techniques, researchers can now describe the severity of the problem.

Wolves in Norway are a hot-button issue, with the latest arguments related to whether or not the animals can be hunted or if they are protected by an international wildlife convention.

Letting nature take its course: Wolves in Yellowstone National Park

https://3c1703fe8d.site.internapcdn.net/newman/csz/news/800/2017/wolves.jpg

Since the reintroduction of wolves to Yellowstone National Park in 1995, the park's ecosystem has become a deeply complex and heterogeneous system, aided by a strategy of minimal human intervention. The new study is a synthesis of 40 years of research on large mammals in Yellowstone National Park, conducted by University of Alberta ecologist Mark Boyce.
