An article about the newly-crowned "oldest man" recently turned up on BBC-News.

UK man is world's oldest at 113
World War I veteran Henry Allingham is the world's oldest man following the death of a 113-year-old in Japan, Guinness World Records has confirmed.

Halfway down the article, we find an innocuous-looking "list of the most important world events since 1896". Have a read at which they chose  :rolleyes2:

What does the death of Elvis have to do with important world events? Besides, we all know he's rooming with Jimmy Hoffa, Bigfoot and Nessie at Area 51.

I can't wait for the day we get to rip down that statue of Nelson Mandela. I have a spare pair of shoes ready and waiting.

It is all silly though. The BBC are the leaders in dumbing down history to the British people. You need only look at their programming of late for that.

Good show by the old boy, btw. I heard he puts his longevity down to copious amounts of whiskey and loose women. :thumbs up

What of?

The assassination of Martin Luther King; the unlocking of the human genome; September 11th; the flight of the Wright brothers; the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.

Just a few from off the top of my head.

Seeing as it is British, I would have gone for:

1901 - Queen Victoria dies.
1914 - WWI breaks out.
1924 - The Wall Street Crash.
1945 - We single-handedly defeat Hitler and the Nazis
1953 - Everest is climbed for the first time.
1963 - The Beatles release the album 'please please me'
1969 - The Beatles perform their last live performance on the roof of Apple Records.
1977 - Queen Elizabeth celebrates her Silver Jubilee.
1989 - Poll Tax introduced into Scotland
1990 - England crash out in the World Cup. Gascoigne cried.
2008 - Monster Munch re-release the big packs of Beef flavour.

Fatty Arbuckle is a bit obscure for the media-soaked person of today. :P
