Why is Bridge banned in Norway and Tom in Portugal? It doesn't make sense.

Well, I find the ban on the name "Tom" pretty stupid, unless that means something in Portuguese. Other than that, if anybody is thinking of naming their children any of the other names, maybe they shouldn't even have children.

Google translate only says Tom means "Tone."

What do Norwegians have against Bridges?

I lol'd at "@" and the Swedish one.

I knew America wouldn't be anywhere on the list, we name our babies just about anything. One of my aunts has a fetish with jewlry. Thus i have 3 cousins...Jewel, Diamond, & Crystal. Its my duty to guide them in life to make sure they don't grow up to be strippers. I always wondered what would happen if my aunt were to have a boy.....Onyx?

Then, I guess it must be racist to say your child has a skin tone.:D This is the only ban I find stupid.

Hmmm...I doubt your aunt could give birth to a baby like this:

I'm not aware that Tom is banned in Portugal. It's true that stupid names won't be allowed by the civil registry but there's no particular law on "Tom".

Here is a list of names that weren't allowed on some registry, as an example. Those with "Não" in front:

http://www.irn.mj.pt/sections/irn/a_registral/registos-centrais/docs-da-nacionalidade/vocabulos-admitidos-e/downloadFile/file/Lista_de_nomes30-06-2012.pdf?nocache=1341821060.06

Actually there is a Tom there with "Não" in front :D

Well, at there's not too many parents naming their kids Dweezil.....

But some of these names that parents come up with are freaking ridiculous.

Here the Law isn't as strict as it used to be. There was a time when non-Spanish names were forbidden, both native and foreign, and should be translated. There was a time when names like Llibertat (Freedom) were obviously banned. Short forms were also not accepted.

Nowadays the only thing I think the Law states is that given names mustn't lead to gender confusion or attempt the person's dignity. I guess many of the ones in the video wouldn't be accepted because of this second rule. The final one, wtf? Lol.
