From pools on the Monterey Peninsula to the Olympic aquatic center, Monterey Peninsula College alum Marko Blazevski is enjoying his newly found fame in his home country of Macedonia.

“Marko is the only male swimmer from Macedonia representing them at (the) Olympics,” Blazevski’s coach Mark Temple said. “He’s turned into a local celebrity back home.”

Blazevski, 19, will compete in the 400 individual medley against U.S. Olympians Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte. He’s been a member of the Monterey Bay Swim Club since 2008, and has been coached by Temple, a former Olympic coach, since arriving on the Monterey Peninsula.

“I looked around the Monterey Peninsula, and the Monterey Bay Swim Club seemed like the best choice for training,” Blazevski said.

The Monterey Bay Swim Club, a nonprofit corporation, retains professional ASCA certified coaches while also offering swim lessons to the community and advanced NCAA training for student-athletes.

Blazevski qualified for the London Olympic Games during his final performances at the Canadian Olympic Trials in March at the Montreal Olympic Pool.

“I always knew I wanted to compete in the Olympics, even though some people didn’t take me seriously,” Blazevski said, “so I used that as motivation to prove anything is possible.”

After arriving on the Monterey Peninsula in 2008, Blazevski attended Monterey High School and then MPC. He is now swimming on scholarship at Wingate University in North Carolina.

Over the last four years, Blazevski has broken national Macedonian records in the 400 and 800 freestyles and set more than 24 MBSC records.
