I see the Sharplaninec as a Macedonian dog others seem to think it's Bulgarian, Serbian, Albanian and strangely even Greek.

http://www.dogcentral.info/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/sarplaninac.jpg

They originate from the Shar Planina mountain range.

Who do you think has the rightful claim to the Sharplaninec?

Shar comes from Scardum. Slavs borrowed it from Albanian as their form is the same and Scardum->Shar follows Albanian phonetic rules.

It was called the Illyrian sheepdog before it was renamed to Sharplaninec. It's retarded to claim dog races as belonging to certain ethnicities, hence being a "Macedonian" dog.

Most people who have a dog in Kosova have a Sharr dog. My uncle has several of them.

It is a ancient Macedonian dog.

The Molossian Theory: The Mother of Alexander the Great was Olympia who was herself a Molossian Queen from the Epirus Kingdom. It is widely believed that the Sarplaninac is directly descended from these original ‘Molossian’ sheep dogs of ancient Epirus. Some scholars believe the Sarplaninac (or it’s direct ancestors) to be the palace dog of Alexander the Great. More over, this geographic area, now know on the Serbian side as Kosovo, was once the heart of the Serbian Empire and civilization which flourished in the middle ages during the time of the Nemanja Kings. It is believed by many that this dog was at the side of King Lazar in his great battles with the invading Turks.

Aristotle, who lived in 384-322 B.C, even wrote about these famous dogs of Epirus. In his "Historia Animalium" he tells us about, among several other dog breeds, the dog from Molossia in Epirus. Aristotle praises the Molossis dogs and tells us that they served as guardians of the herds, and distinguished themselves from all other dogs through there size and indomitable courage against wild animals.

Shar Planina in Albanian is called Mali i Sharrit. The only words that Shar comes close to meaning is Sharre (saw, arm saw), Sharra (sawmill) and Shartese (graft).

On the other side, Shar Planina is a Mottled Mountain; from Serbian iSHARano (from is-harano; mottled, specked; English scar; Lat. eschara)

Beautiful dogs-and they look so strong too. When you posted about them, I looked online, and I saw some breeders are starting to sell puppies here in the US. I hope that you all consider that a good thing, so the dogs can be shared with the rest of the world and the breed strengthen and continues. Are they good as house pets or are they dogs that herd and protect the farm animals? Are they good with children?

As I've already said, claiming dogs as belonging to a certain ethnicity is retarded. To misinterpret a dispute over the etmology of a toponym isn't retarded but it's still stupid, and to add on that, it's both comical and ironic.

Scardus to Shar follows Albanian phonetic RULES....oh c'mon this is crazy.
Yes it does

Çabej points out that villages in the Balkans are generally of recent date and changeable settlement. Hence for the study of toponyms city names and rivers are best. If we inspect such names attested by ancient sources, we find that many follow Albanian phonological development: Scardus > Shar, with no metathesis, as in Scardona > Skradin. Scodra > Shkodër; Çabej remarks that sk- > h- belonged to the pre-Balkan period, and compares (VII Congresso internazionale 244), for phonology, shkamb < scamnum and kulshedër < chersydrus. (Rogame is a recent suffixation in -ame of rëge, and therefore no problem because of the medial -g-.) Barbanna > Buenë is regular, as shown by Jokl (IF 1932: 50.33 ff.), Slavia (1934-1935:13.286 ff.), Glotta (1936:25.121 B.). Lissus > Lesh (cf. missa > meshë, etc.); Çabej points out (VII Congresso intemazionale 245) that Latin + CC is regular, a statement I can neither affirm nor control at the moment. Dyrrachium > Durrës, Isamnus > Ishm, Drivastum > Drisht show, as Krahe claims, the Illyrian initial accent. Shkum(b)î < Scampinus is regular in the Central Albanian dialect, where pretonic ë > u and mb > m are expectable (VII Congresso internazionale 246). Aulwn > Vlorë may perhaps involve a Slavic intermediary. Thyamis > Çamëria, as Leake saw in 1814, is accepted by Çabej; however, one might expect s < t (cf. pus 'well' < Lat. puteus). Arachthos > Arta is supposedly better explained by Albanian than by Greek; but, apart from the surprising syncope, kt should yield ft or jt, and not t, from that time level. Ragusium (Ragusa) is Rush in Bogdan (1685).
Source (http://books.google.se/books?id=5pCBRsfJMv8C&printsec=frontcover&dq=ancient+indo+european+dialects&source=bl&ots=nx5zFpMWpk&sig=xURJw3WAs7CH0xrZCfIH3zj5NSs&hl=en&sa=X&ei=MxkRUPrGJonk4QSBiICQBA&redir_esc=y#v=onepage&q=ancient%20indo%20european%20dialects&f=false)

Those mountains were called Scardus, Scordus and Scodrus by Greek scholars from antiquity. The development of Scardus to Shar follows Albanian phonetic rules, something that has been established by linguists and is accepted by all linguists. I have already told you this.

It's not 'your' Yugoslav Sheepdog, troll. It's not beautiful, but it's a very nice dog, and it has its own charm. Unlike you, I have been in the presence of multitudes of these dogs as my family members have several of these, so I would know about its charm.

"Vague" isn't the right word. Although I have said it repeatedly, it's retarded to claim a dog as being "Albanian", "Macedonian", "Greek", etc. The toponym discussion didn't have anything to do with the dog, not from my side at least. Why are you all so stupid?

It's like you guys are so insecure and paranoid about your origins, that you can't stand to concede anything at all to a neighbouring country... even if we were talking about the name of a species of ant you would probably defend it's "Albanian-ness" to the death.

You guys really need to do something about this inferiority complex that pervades your culture.

You don't even have anything to cry about... nobody's tried to claim Albanians or ethnically cleanse Albania ffs.

So either stfu about your Illyrian/Albanian bullsh*t and stop ramming it down everyone's throats or concede the fact that your identity is about as well-understood as the Big Bang.

P.S. You forgot to say "Slavs".

Illirico

Its origin is not clear; it is believed that their ancestors were the ancient Molosser dogs of Greece and the livestock guarding dogs of Turkey.

The breed was initially recognized by the Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI) in 1939 as the Illyrian Shepherd Dog, after the Ancient name of the region.

In 1957, at the request of the Yugoslav Canine Federation (JKS), the FCI changed the name to Yugoslav Shepherd Dog-Šarplaninac, after the Šar Mountains (Šar Planina in South Slavic languages) where the breed is most common.[4][5]
The image of the Šarplaninac is featured on the reverse of the Macedonian 1 denar coin, issued in 1993,[6] and on the emblem of Dragaš, a town in southern Kosovo, located in the Šar Mountains region

Ps: Also Alexander the Great is becoming as "FYROM-Slavo-Vardaskian.Macedonian" in 1993:swl

My opinion is that this dog is an Balkan Dog, today it is used by all balkan people, STOP. Maybe, originally, this dog were used by the ancient pastoral peoples who lived in the Modern Balkans that were illyrians but this is not important, this do not make this dog "fyromian", "yugoslavian", "serbian", "bulgarian", "albanian" etc:)

It was made by mixin' Caucasian ovcharka, and some local smaller breed..

... if this was an Albanian breed, it would indeed confirm their Caucasus origins :D

Balkan was an origin of hounds, big dogs came from east

Do you understand why I am calling you, including the rest, stupid? Because you totally misinterpret anything and everything. I have repeated myself several times now: I do not claim the dog as being "Albanian" or anything, retard. I have repeated several times that it's stupid to claim dogs as being "Albanian", "Macedonian" or anything. Is this so fucking impossible to read? How can you misinterpret something as simple as that? Is your unibrow preventing you from reading and comprehending?

I'll try to put it as simple for you: the discussion was about the Shar toponym itself, not the dog. I can't give you any help beyond that.

I didn't ram down anything about Illyrians down anyone's throat, so stfu. Our identity is quite well understood, that you don't understand it is because you're a fucking retard who hasn't read about it. Do you think I fucking care that you're ignorant? Btw, the Big Bang is rather well understood, I should know. The problem is, again, your own understanding of it.

Now, stop with the straw-manning, non-sequiturs, putting words in my mouth, arguments from ignorance, etc. Finally, admit your fault; that you have completely misinterpreted me, whether on purpose or not.

Oh, and weren't you supposed to discuss with me over PMs about the Illyrian thing? I have yet to see any PM from you. Why is that? Did you even plan to do that? I doubt it.

The only reason you're amazed is because you're as thick as the earth's crust. Where did I say something about anything that was private? I revealed nothing and there was nothing to reveal in the first place.

I'll just show you this: http://www.theapricity.com/forum/showpost.php?p=1033348&postcount=134

I have yet to see any PM from him, even though he was going to reply to me in a PM. He did so because he wanted to save face, hence no PM. I don't see what's wrong with asking for the PM from my side though, he lies to save his face, I tell the truth to ruin his face. This is what people get for being assholes.

If I may, as an outsider viewing from the sidelines?

The sense I get is that this breed is older than any of the current ethnicities vying to claim it as their own.

Whatever their origins in either history or legend, they look like a fine animal and the descriptions seem to bear out this impression.

Would you people shut the fuck up for 10 seconds!
The dog is obviously albanian, his natural instinct is to hate slavs and kill wolfs.
Both slav balkanians and wolfs have one thing in common, the're both intruders both scavages.
So this dog has developed the same traits as the rightfull owners, albanians.
Gentle giants but if you mess with, you'll get it.
Same thing with albos, we love peace but you mess with us, we'll take revenge.

The most interesting part of this, the breeder of this dog for generations, albanian from Sharr explains: the dog when is bread from albanians turns out a gentle giant but a very very brave and smart dog when is needed to make those decisions on its own.
On the other side however, when serbs and slavs breed the dog, the dog becames agressive with everyone, even towards family memebers.

Even dogs shoves it in your face balkan slavs!

In a small village on the slopes of Mt.Olympus where I had stayed for a few days, the hotel owners had a dog like this one. He was called "Ares"

He was the most imposing and frightening creature I had seen and at the same time I fell "in love" with him because he had the heart of an angel :)

He was extremely friendly and playful, he came to me when I called and licked me on the face. I brought left overs from my meal (it was lamb chops) and I fed him and then he was following me around during my stay. I sat down on the porch, he came and rested his head on my lap, I almost cried :) I have never bonded with a dog like that (I am a cat person) :)

On the day I was packing to leave, he did the unthinkable:
I was standing in front of the car, putting my luggage inside, and Ares somehow *sensed*? that I was leaving, he came running from some field where he had been wandering about, he was covered in snow, and as soon as we were face to face, he stood on his back legs and hugged me like a human does to another human

I was so touched that I had tears running down my cheeks :) What a great dog! It's amazing how smart and friendly and intuitive these dogs are. Who gives a fuck where they come from, they love humans who love them back, and that's all that matters. ;)

Thankyou Rashka for your input. As it is, the Albanians have borrowed heavily from us Slavs. Kaplan Resuli did make mention in his interview with a Macedonian news agency, that if the Ottomans came 200 years later, the Albanian-Shqiptar language would had been completely Slavicised. I advise many here to have a read of Kaplan-Resuli's interview....maybe one of the Macedonians in this forum can post it for us and make a thread about it :D

This retarded pro-Serb Kaplan communist is less valid than Dobrica Cosic Nobel prize winner, the father of Serbian Nation: "We lie to deceive ourselves, to console others, we lie for mercy, we lie to fight fear, to encourage ourselves, to hide our and somebody else's misery. "Lying is the highest virtue of the Serbian people.''

My forefathers were speaking Albanian-Shqiptar? My forefathers were speaking Slavic for 500 years before an Albanian-Shqiptar were brought to the Shkumbini to fight Serbs in the Serbo-Byzantine war. Serbs gave Albanian-Shqiptars mercy because they were on the losing side of this battle.
