View Full Version : Why do we exist?

Mordid

Seriously, there is no ultimate reason to exist. The entire human race will die out soon and everything is ultimately meaningless and pointless. we are nothing, and we will leave nothing behind. The only reason why we exist is for hedonistic irrational pure brute pleasure that means absolutely nothing the very instant it is over.

Because we think, we exist :D
Seriously though, who knows we might become so advanced before dying that we could create such universes of our own, in other words reach to the Divine.

Why doesn't make sense to me. There doesn't need to be a reason for our existence, unless one believes in an intelligent creator of course.

Why shouldn't we exist? :D
Because we are destructive, arrogant creatures that upset the balance of nature. It is strange that we alone cause so much to happen to our planet, so we question why we are here.

This question is something that humanity has tried to answer since the beginning and that is why we have religions.

Funny you'd have asked. I was thinking about that all day yesterday, that's why I'm so depressed today!

This is the exact thought I had "WTF is all this shit about? It makes no fucking sense at all, so why?" As you can see I was more intellectual about it than you, but other than that close enough. :p

So here are my conclusions: life is not good, it's not beautiful, it's not a gift or a reward. It's a consequence of stupidity, it sucks donkey balls, it's a cosmic grinder that chews one up and spits one out like a used condom, when it's done with us, and it's never done!

Final thought: Oh fuck it, I'm gonna get drunk! What the fuck do I care? :D

Compare the life expectancy at birth of the human species worldwide during the course of history. Modern medicine sure was a huge breakthrough at this regard, rendering our lives longer and far less miserable. I guess complaining is the option left when one's amused to death.

I think the only real reason to live is to take care that our genes live on.
In other words to create offspring.
After we succesfully manage this we have to pay attention that the childern spread our genes too. That`s a priniciple of evolution.

We exist only by chance. It was by chance that the universe came to be, just as it was by chance that organisms came to be. First there were microorganisms, then more developed organisms evolved from previous stages, in the end you have the organisms we see today.

I have nihilistic views, yet I don't agree that nihilism should entail apathy. Do we really need a higher meaning to exist? Is meaning the only logical reason for not becoming apathetic? If so, you are no better than religious and spiritual people that are too afraid to accept nihilism. You have the same reasoning as these people in that they believe that they only live for the ulterior meaning of life and without it there is no reason to go on.

Apathy as a reaction to nihilism is a leftover from religious thinking. This is perhaps why religion is the opium of the people, because it makes you think that life is worse without it than with it and that you should therefore not leave it.

According to Nietzsche, we should accept Nihilism, but not the apathy that it entails. We should learn to accept the world for what it is and enjoy it instead of relying on the supernatural to give us a reason to exist. Let's make our own meaning, our own reason to continue as individuals and as a race. It will take time, so we have to further the advancement of the species itself.

We can improve the collective unconscious and ourselves. We can go beyond our current limits.

People enjoy different things, hedonism is not the answer for me, however. With science we are able to understand everything there is to understand, in our universe and perhaps even beyond it. We can act on those understandings. That is how I enjoy myself, and what I will carry on doing.

Hedonism is simply a primitive reaction to apathy which is a reaction to nihilism.

It might not appear as rewarding as going to living eternally, although we might be able to do that through science, but it truly is.

I would vote for this as the best contribution you have ever made. This is also a very messy post, probably not the messiest I have made, however.

Ok, I've had my fun, I'm gonna answer it seriously now. ;) To the best of my cognitive abilities, with my understanding of reality, after much deliberations, contemplation and meditation here are my thoughts: the only reason we exit is to develop the mind, to make it noble so it can understand reality. There is no other goal or purpose. In essence it is a self resolving puzzle.

The life is wasted if you never meditate or investigate reality. Each life is a small step in never ending quest to understand reality. It's been going on for ever and it will go on until we are sick and tired of being stupid and seriously get on with the business of investigating reality. It's a sort of cosmic high school, you don't graduate until you get the math right, with one exception there is no one to bribe or fool to sleaze one's way out.

So it's either get smart and serious about your cosmic "education" or suffer the consequences of being a cosmic loser, which all of us are at present! Sorry if someone does not like it, the truth hurts! There is no one to save you, there never was. It's all up to you! The cosmos doesn't care either way, it always is of the attitude... it sucks to be you! :p

Be stupid if you want, but know you are gonna pay for it! There is no free lunch! Bon appetite!

The only question is: can you handle the truth? :D

This is the right frame of mind, one starts seriously investigating when one is so fed up with it that one can't take it anymore. Being sick and and tired of the grinder is the step in the right direction. There is a way out of it, it's not easy, it's very hard but here is the scoop, very difficult is still preferable to the impossible. The mind wakes up so to speak and from then on it's looking for the way out. It comes from within, that's how it works.

And in the future, is a big crunch gonna happen or what?
I personally think that whosoever created this universe was someoneike us before.
Then in a tens of thousands of years, his race got advanced so much that they created a virtual world called 'Universe'
So thousands of years ahead (if our earth remains safe from sun and asteroids and crazy humans) our descendents will be able to have their own personal 'Universes'.

Yes, the big bang happened by chance. I don't know why are you asking this when I already made it clear that everything happened simply by chance. Furthermore, it is still happening, the universe is expanding exponentially.

As for your inter-universal space Aryan race; not very likely. I'm not a fan of fiction.

After discovering the accelerating expansion of the Universe the model of Big Crunch became very unlikely.

There are however several attempts to incorporate accelerated expansion of the Universe in a cyclic Universe but they suffer too many problems.

There are however several papers which argue that life could go indefinitely in future that is that go against cyclic Universe.
http://arxiv.org/abs/astro-ph/0205279

So whether the theories of cyclic Universe are true or false I agree with Osprey in that the better question to ask would be
Why does the Universe exist?
since it comes before the life.

yea the question is not whether the universe came to existence but why is the universe in existence. Whether or not there will be a big crunch is irrevelant to the fact that the sun will not last forever and that will be the issue billions of years from now for whatever creature is inhabiting the earth at that point

First of all the identification of particle is pending ( most likely its Higgs ).
A particle is found in the proposed theoretical range but scientists have to confirm that this particle is Higgs

Secondly it was originally called the goddamn particle because of its elusiveness and its importance in physics but as usual because of stupid editors who did not allowed "goddamn" word in an article and because of stupid newreporters its known to us as the god particle

Thirdly why is Higgs central to the idea that life originated by random chance?:noidea:
Its a particle just like any other particle and after its discovery comes even more difficult question
What gave Higgs boson mass?

I don't really see how 'why?' is different from 'how?' in this case. But I'll take the bait. Why? The Big Bang. That is if you don't want to give some other reason for it existing, like multiversal space Aryans or a deity like god, which enjoys no evidence. This all happened by chance and there was no 'motive' rather than reason behind it. Big Bang gives a reason, religion gives a motive and a reason.

A cyclic model is the most likely model based on current evidence such as dark matter. It was a problem before, in 2003, when that paper was published, but not anymore.

The discovery of Higgs Boson proves the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Standard_Model to be right. Higgs Boson is basically what gives everything that exists mass and is therefore crucial to the existence of everything, which is also why it's named the god particle, even though mostly by writers and journalists. It gives a greater understanding of the universe, but not exactly how it started.

Here's a video explaining it.

If by paper you mean the discovery of accelerated expansion of the Universe it was published in 1998 not 2003.
What the fuck has that article you posted do with the cyclic Universe anyway?
It simply confirms that gravity has nothing to do with the expansion of the Universe because if it did than probably the Universe would not accelerating in the first place.
This article has nothing to do with cyclic theories of the Universe.

Sorry, I meant to say dark energy. It is relevant because dark energy decays, and it becomes dark matter - supposedly. This means that a constant expansion might not be the best explanation. The link I sent was the wrong one.

I don't really believe in a cyclic model either though. :P But it's interesting as an alternative.

We exist because we are a byproduct of own distinct evolution. We developed cognitive abilities such as logic/reason, morality/conscience and self reflection, etc. that goes beyond our basic needs of survival that evolved in our favor. Our very existence is up to the individuals themselves to decide on how they want to live their lives. Sure there are instances where we have our own distinct view of our own lives/reality that doesn't conform with other views out there in either a philosophical, scientific or psychological way that we hold in regard as the "meaning" of life. The truth is that the "meaning" behind one's life is open to their own interpretation.

We are a byproduct of our mind's bias/ or influences that determine how our lives will be shaped to be. Our influences are determined by environmental factors (e.g. media, parents, experiences, or even how you choose to view things that are devoid of external influences that you as an individual chooses to think) that in turn determines how our actions will play out for either a positive or negative outcome.

The "meaning" of one's life is determined by the state your mind is in (e.g. sad, happy, depressed, etc.) that will in turn determine if your life is perceived as either "good" or "bad." The reason why I say this is because were all subjective as human beings to some extent whether we want to accept it or not; it just the way it is. One could argue that life is "great" or "sucks" which in essence is biased in its own way that has either a positive or negative perception attached to it. Life in its own right is neutral; you determine how you will shape your life and so forth.

This may be a bit off topic but the generalized view that being "cynical" is bad is true to an extent. Being a cynic within the bounds of one's rationality is justifiable since the individual is rationalizing an observation, experience or even controversial occurrence is what I would like to call a "realist" per se. Whereas being a cynic that goes beyond the bounds of one's rationality will just end with self destructive tendencies.

Just my "two cents" for today. :)
