Romanian Olympic students won a gold medal, two silver and one bronze at the 44th edition of the International Chemistry Olympiad in the US, held between July 21 and 29 in Washington, according to the Ministry of Education, Research, Youth and Sports.

This is a better result than last year, when Romanian students won three silver medals and a bronze one, the ministry said.

Winner of a silver medal at the previous edition, Vlad Bacauanu, a 12th grade graduate of the Bucharest Computer Science High School, outdid his previous performance and won gold this year.

The silver medals went to Maria Andreea Filip (tenth grade, International Computer Science High School in Bucharest) and Alexandru Paraschiv (12th grade, National College Sf. Sava in Bucharest), while the bronze medal went to George Silvian Baltac (12th grade, Neagoe Basarab High School of Calarasi).

This year’s Chemistry Olympiad gathered 282 competitors from 78 countries. The competition consisted of two exams – a theoretical examination and a practical examination. Both last up to 5 hours, and are held on separate days. All participants are ranked based on their individual scores and no official team scores are given. Gold medals are awarded to the top 12 percent of students, silver medals are awarded to the next 22 percent of students, and bronze medals are awarded to the next 32 percent of students.
