I lived in Alaska when I was younger (places I've lived, England, Scotland, Alaska, Illinois, Georgia, Southern California, Northern California, Oregon, Virginia...) Been to every state from Florida to California and from CA up to Washington. Think the only states I haven't been in are Utah, Idaho, Colorado, Wyoming and Montana.

Out of those all I think I liked Illinois the most but Alaska was nice. Went ice fishing, saw aurora borealis multiple times, rode motorcycles through the woods, camped out next to glacier lakes that were bright blue and the sky so clear you can see every star and satellites orbiting with the naked eye, sled in the snow, walked around at 3am when it was still sunlight.

Might be moving to Northern Europe soon, so I'm already familiar with the strangeness of living so far north.

Long winded post but I have some experience with this :)

I like so many. I like all the Southern states, especially North and South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, Florida and Alabama. I also like Wisconsin, Minnesota, Colorado and Pennsylvania. Texas is pretty awesome too.

I haven't been to the Northwest yet.

If I had to pick one, I guess it would be Georgia. Atlanta is an amazing city and the area around the city is gorgeous. North Georgia is like a giant garden. It's so green. The whole state is pretty, and I love the small towns. Every little town in that state takes such pride in their downtown areas. They take really good care of the old houses, and commercial areas. Especially the Antebellum homes.

I haven't visited the United States, nor am I a big expert in its geography, but from what I've seen I would say Oregon, for its weather and landscape mostly.
And the fact that it isn't crowded with blacks doesn't hurt either.

Out of the states I've been to : Pennsylvania, Florida, North Carolina, New York (outside NYC.) Rural New Jersey is also nice; It's very similar to Pennsylvania. Louisiana also seems to have an interesting history, with the French. I also like Massachusetts even though I've never been there; it's quite historical and the cities are beautiful. I don't like the West too much, to be honest, although the prairie areas are quite beautiful.

Are you talking just about Chicago? Because outside of Chicago, the state is a giant flat cornfield. It cannot match the scenery in Georgia. To limit Georgia to just Civil War sites because that's all you wanted to see is silly. I have never visited a Civil War site there. There are many other places to see.

My Aunts live in Atlantic City, and I always enjoy the car rides on the way there. The city is alright too; the boardwalks and beaches especially. My mother wanted to move there, but I didn't want to move to another new city and leave my comfortable life here, and before that my mother had custody issues with my paternal Aunt and her husband. I'm not sure if she still wants to move there, but since I'm off to college now, she has the ability.

I was born in Tennessee, but I feel a need to give a nod to Ohio and Virginia. I spent most of my life, to date, in the Buckeye State. Ohio is like a state that represents almost all of the states in the USA. It's like a melting pot of Americans. There are both rural regions and urban regions, with plenty of suburbs. In fact, there are places where you can find all three within the same few square miles. We have some nice cities too. Midwesterners tend to be friendly people, as well.

I have deep roots in Tennessee and Virginia. The Volunteer State gave birth to much of what we hear on the radio. Memphis and Nashville are in that state. Sun Studio is too. It's no accident that Washington was born in the Old Dominion, as Virginia gave us the most presidents. That state is like the birthplace of our country. Jefferson and Madison wrote our most important documents, so its not an exaggeration to say that the USA was created in Virginia. The Appalachian region is gorgeous too.

Maine has one of the lowest crime rates in the country, in the rural parts of Maine violent crime is amazingly low. My town is so safe that there has only been one murder( domestic violence) in ten years. It is the custom in my little town ( 1,600 people) to leave the front door unlocked in winter, for the farm houses that are far away from the towns. That is because if someone is out in winter, and needs a warm place to stay in an emergency, they can use their neighbor's home.
It is the same in the hunting cabins too, so skiers and snowmobile users can thaw out in emergencies. Of course that is not the case in the metropolitan areas.
I think it is because of how dangerously cold it can get here, and in winter the tourists are all gone so only locals use the houses and we trust it will be OK. The only danger that I worry about is getting shot during hunting season, people are simply nuts during this season, and we wear orange to try to keep safe. I even put orange vests on the dogs, and people put orange blankets on horses. Seriously, it is really bad, sometimes pets and livestock get shot by hunters.

Pennsylvania is 31, which is decent considering we're surrounded by the most restrictive states in the federation, but still, we can do much better! Southern and Midwestern states are so beautifully free, and then there's New Hampshire which is in highly restrictive New England, but is the number one most free state.

It has a climate that runs to extremes at random. The scenery is pleasant but never magnificent. It's small and crowded, but I was born here and I've lived here for 80 years "...in spite of all temptations to belong to other nations
...." (W.S. Gilbert).

I've travelled widely in the 50 states and some others are much more scenic, especially Montana and Alaska while others have more benign climates, such as Florida and Hawaii. Maine and Wyoming are both much less crowded. And yet...and yet...this is my home, my native land.

So, I have to say "Connecticut."

I thought about it again. My decision is Idaho. I would try to get a big property and live from agriculture. :) The unspoilt nature is great.

Yep the west is the best choice for agriculture. Many small farmers are fleeing westward because the suburbs of large cities in the east are encroaching upon the rural areas, and land is becoming more and more expensive (although still immensely cheaper than what can be found in Europe.) Idaho is also very good for hunting. The only states that compete with Idaho have vastly other problems, Louisiana has a high crime rate, Texas has illegal immigration, and Pennsylvania has too much de-synchronization between the urban and rural regions, and hence instability. Most other Western and Mid-Western states wouldn't be bad choices either though. Indiana comes to mind in particular. You just have to worry about harsh winters.

It's not as if I'm saying all Californians are like that, nor are all Californians totally odd to me. It's just that much of the disgusting political policies and cultural policies of this nation originated from and were imposed by that place, and just like a Christian would not want to go to hell, I, as an American, would not want to live(or die) in California.

Plus it's one of the first states to collapse and is highly unstable. I don't see why anybody would want to move there NOW, considering the inevitable future. Back when it had a lot of growth I can see, with things like silicon valley, but now there is absolutely no reason.

I'll try to take your word for it since you live there. It seems as if all the Californians I meet at my university, and all of the stuff that comes up on the news substantiates my prejudice. I've had Californians tell me that Pennsylvania is too outdated, too rural, and its government needs to restrict us even more, haha. They're the only people I've met from this country that are so odd to me that I'd consider them a different people, even many African-Americans seem more American (in sentiment at least) than these people. Of course they're still my friends or associates, but they're "odd." I have a Chinese roommate from Hong Kong, and these people from California can sometimes be as "foreign" as this roommate is. Maybe it has much to do with geographical distance.

The violence in some areas certainly is bad - that I'll give you, but there are plenty of nice towns. Plus there are lots of cool places to visit like Jamestown (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jamestown,_California), and Moss Landing has the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monterey_Bay_Aquarium_Research_Institute).

Here's a nice summary of why it's a bad (and currently failed) state.

http://theeconomiccollapseblog.com/archives/55-reasons-why-california-is-the-worst-state-in-america

Maybe I'd visit California to go see some of the universities there and what they're working on, but that's absolutely it. Jamestown also seems nice for those who are interested in the Gold Rush. I'd much rather visit colonial historical places though. Not to say it's better than California's history, it's just that I find colonial Anglo-American history much more interesting than colonial Spanish American history and post-Colonial history.

Haha, well this is a subjective thread "favorite American state" and hence I am telling you why California is one of my least "favorite" American states. There are economic, cultural, social, and political reasons. To be fair though, most states are bad in one of these areas, some in two or three, but California is one of the few bad in all of them (to me.) I'd think it would be wise for people who want California to be better not to ignore the trends, but your politicians seem to think more of the poison will cure it.

I've never been to the US but I think I would love Alaska. It's close to Siberia and based on what I've seen in the internet it has really beautiful snowy mountains, gorgeous Seas with many Grizzly Bears and wolves my favourite animal. Furthermore I would love to visit Arizona and the South West with the amazing Grand Canyon and other beautiful states like Colorado with the beautiful Rocky Mountains. Actually I find that all states in the US have their own beauty and I would love to visit all the states before I die:love:

California is mostly a shithole. The beautiful landscape is all it's really got going for it. The general vibe of the state is just generally.. unappealing, unless you're very far north I guess. Florida is an even bigger shithole, so I really can't understand anyone voting for that. For me, the ideal states are:

Washington
Oregon
Colorado
Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire mostly because they all seem very scenic, quiet and peaceful
Maybe Utah if the Mormons weren't there
Alaska if it weren't so remote

In terms of scenery/topography, California - hands down. It's the most diverse state.
Desert, rugged majestic coastline, San Fransisco (my fav. city), snow capped mountains, nice beaches in the south land, vineyards, diverse climate/micro-climates, from plush green redwoods in the NW to Cactus in the SE, etc...

I've never been to America unfortunately :( but if I could have a choice of where I would like to visit there, it would probably be California, Florida, somewhere like Alaska, and New York (though I'm from London so I think ny would probably get boring to me after a while).

Well NYC is great if you like the city, and it probably is the best city in America and possibly the world though this is debatable. but its overcrowded, dirty and expensive. The rest of NY can vary to farmlands, to ghettoes to suburban neighborhoods.

I have never visited California but i heard the weather in southern cali is great and the scenary is nice along with some big cities nearby. Problem is the huge immigration and the incompetent state and local government.

Hard to say.

New York City used to be the best city in the United States, I would never say that is true today though. It isn't a great place to live compared to much of the rest of the country (urban or rural), and there are - as you have noted - cleaner, prettier, cheaper, quieter, safer, more free, and overall better places to live in the world and particularly in the United States. Of course, I wouldn't tell a New Yorker that to his face, because they tend to be overly-defensive in a patriotic sort of way, in much a similar way many Americans still think the United States is the "best country in the world." But as far as any objective means go, New York City is quite lackluster these days. The only thing it is probably best at is "being a city" and there are other cities in the world that are better at "being cities."

i would love to visit more US states in my lifetime! everytime i've been over the border it's been alot of fun :)

i have some family in michigan, which is a nice state... kind of like canada, but with terrible roads :P the rochester area is so very nice!

driving through Penn. and Virgina is a very beautiful area if i remember correctly. the scenery was lovely

i really like south carolina because everyone was so nice there :) and this is coming from a canadian! maybe it's because they could tell we were foreign ("you have such soft accents" - southerners told us, everywhere) but everyone i met was so great and talkative... even the fast food workers would ask me how my day went :)

i also liked florida... sun, warm, beach, swimming, fun places to go and nice hotel rooms :P i didn't see too much of it, i remember my dad being too reluctant to want to go to big cities ("i will die before i drive in miami!!!")

texas was also very nice, we visited family friends who used to live in canada for a few years for business and stuff... the guy my age plays football now and they always eat homemade food (which is delicious) so he is pretty full blood american aha ;)

i think i would like to visit most states, really. california i've always wanted to see too. everrrrrrrrything is cheaper in the us (clothes, alcohol ... clothes) so it never matters too much to me where we go (;

(couldn't pick just one american state had to mention them all :) )

The American stereotype lives in the South. Religious nuts, stupidity, and the blacks are worse down here too.

I love Michigan, Illinois, Pennsylvania, New York, California, Oregon and Washington.

Also it is VERY surprising how many Europeans admire Texas. I can say with high confidence that you guys would hate Texas if you ever went there.

I believe the stereotype that there are havens for hillbillies in the South, but I've been to Tennessee, Nashville and its environs, and the people were very hospitable, blacks too were even more reverent than in the North. I fear that many people let a few bad apples taint the entire region in their minds.
