View Full Version : What is your favorite type of European food?

What is your favorite European food? I notice that American food (esp. fast food) can be pretty mundane, so I'm learning new German and Italian recipes.
I grew up in a German American family that had cultural influence from living in Transdniester. My family had interesting recipes that blended Ukrainian food with German food. My favorite foods tend to be rather heavy, though, like Knepfla (German cheese ravioli), sauerkraut, which I heard tends to be an acquired taste, and lots of potatoes.

My aunt always used to bring some frozen frogs' legs with 'er whenever she visited. Mother would always season 'em with adobo and fry 'em. Loved 'em ever since. Would live on 'em and stuffed shells alone, if I could. :D

In that region everybody eats a lot of potatoes. Usually a dinner is a soup and a second dish, meat and potatoes is standard. Also, sauerkraut, pickles, herrings, rye bread, cabbage, lots and lots of meat ( there are more sausage kinds that I can count ) are foods people eat all the time. People eat meat for breakfast, lunch and dinner everyday. It's really tasty and good food, but I doubt it's the healthiest. ;)

Though I am of Norwegian ancestry, I must confess that I eat and cook more Italian food than any other kind. I prefer the cuisine of Abruzzo and the area about Milan to the tomato-rich dishes of the Bay of Naples.
N.B., though, I DO cook and eat Norwegian food and serve it to my guests at Christmas. Roast pork, a Norwegian holiday staple in my grandmother's day, is featured in my Christmas dinners. I also celebrate Julaften and serve fiskeboller i kvit saus, korv [I know, korv is Swedish, but I bend tradition a bit because it's so delicioius], and flatbrod med gjetost.
Of course, all this Norsk provender is washed down with mead and followed by glogg.

So far the Spanish and Italian, both are the ones I found myself more easy to get used to and like. French, not so much like their desserts tho.

In general German, particularly the cuisine of Baden, Palatinate and Alsace. I also have a weakness for the English breakfast. But actually all European countries have some great dishes to offer: be it a moose salami from Sweden, chorizo from Spain or kabanos from eastern Europe.

It has to be pizza, although it has undergone a mighty transformation in the US. I still prefer the Neapolitan style, a thin crust, over the Sicilian style.

There is not much I don't like foodwise and tend to be rather epicuriously adventurous. To what would seem the opposite of adventure,I like many British dishes, even those that are simple beyond simple such as baked beans on toast. Others are the full English breakfast, Ploughman's lunch, shepard's or cottage pies, pork pies, Cornish pasties, scones with clotted cream, Lancashire hotpot, Sunday roast consisting of roast beef and potaotes with Yorkshire pudding, Welsh leek soup and so on. I can make most as we have a British food place not far but some stuff don't make it here like Wiltshire bacon or gammon because of the cost of shipping as I am told.:(
Italian,German,Indian,Puerto Rican,Mexican,French and others all are on my list but I am wary of "authentic" food places like take aways or chains that Americanise things for what ever reason. This requires some searching for real food of whatever country/ethnic/region orgins or that I make it myself, which I normally do.

Roast pork, roast potatoes (crisp on the outside and slightly fluffy in the middle), mushy peas (so much more practical than 'garden peas').
Cabbage, brussel sprouts, carrots.
Pickled onions, fried bread. Bread that is fried with butter and jam is amazing but only if you want to die young :D.
Most pies, chips (don't really like thin fries, but proper potato slices).
Most stews.
Most soup - Celeriac soup is amazing.
Fish and chips.
Salted peanuts (in reasonable quantities).
Cheesecakes.
Some cheeses (although cheese makes me sweat under the eyes and is uncomfortable to eat, it's still worth it)
Digestive biscuits, preferably to dunk in tea.

I miss sausage rolls and Irn-Bru from Scotland. That's just a guilty pleasure.
But my favorite European food is Greek (which is also heavily influenced by Turkish food).
Italian is ok. I admit I like Italian veal dishes but not really into pasta.
French is good. I haven't had French Onion soup in a long time.

Anyway, I should cut back a bit and lose some paunch. Too much lovely food around!
best thing to lose weight is to starve once or twice a week, dont eat anything(Christian custom was not to eat on Fridays), and drink only water, coffie or tea(without sugar), and when you look what to eat, look at nutrients that you need, dont be like i must not eat pizza, but rather, i need some protein, fat, minerals vitamins etc
Its all about mentality, and yeah, workout :)
