This is sad. I wonder who's behind this. :(

A Shia film director has been killed near his home on the outskirts of Damascus amid fears of enemy plots to create a sectarian rift in the country.

The 57-year-old Alawite filmmaker, Bassam Mohieddin al-Hussain, was assassinated on Sunday by "treacherous hands,” Syria's General Cinema Institute said in statement on Tuesday.

The murder occurred in the capital’s Jdaidet Artuz suburb, where government forces have been trying to weed out foreign-backed insurgents.

Born in 1955 in the Mediterranean port city of Tartus, Hussain held an MA in filmmaking and television from the National Academy of Film and Theatre Arts in Sofia, Bulgaria.

Syria has experienced over a year of fierce clashes between the Syrian Army and security personnel and insurgents fighting the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

Analysts warn that the conflict is getting more sectarian given the stronger presence of radical Sunni insurgents in the country, where the Alawite Shias make up a small minority.

On Tuesday, Syrian security forces killed two local al-Qaeda leaders among nearly two dozen foreign-sponsored insurgents in Tal Rafa’at, near the northwestern city of Aleppo.

A New York Times report in July revealed the US attempts to help the presence of Sunni extremists, including al-Qaeda militants, in Syria to mount pressure on Assad to leave office.

Other reports also indicate that mercenaries from the notorious US security firm Blackwater/Academi are training al-Qaeda militants in Saudi Arabia and Turkey to fight in Syria.
