How about a thread about firewood? (Or is there one already?)

Anyway, shortly I am beginning my usual firewood preparations for the coming Winter. I was thinking of constructing one or two Holz Hausens (Holz Mietes). Anyone, familiar with them? I have never built one. Here are some interesting (and funny) sites about them:

Any opinions would be appreciated or other options/preferences for stacking...

:)

From one wood burner to another.... ;)

I've done something similar--but only for temporary storage. Really, it was nothing more than a pile with the top layer placed so that the bark faced out and acted somewhat as a roof.

I just stack it the 'regular' way--on pallets and covered with scrap pieces of standing-seam roofing and tarps. Also, I have cedar posts driven into the ground at either end so that the whole damn thing doesn't come crashing down!

I burn about 4-5 cords per year and just stack it all in one big stack. How much do you burn, Thorum?

Here's a shot of one end of last year's pile, plus a standing stone I put up just for the hell of it. ;)

Hej Dalton, thanks. I'll try to post a photo or two also of my wood stacks. I suppose we burn about 4 cords a season. From about mid-December through mid-February the wood stove is kept going non-stop, 24/7. It is a big one and is in the living room (our main activity room; TV, kids toys, couch, etc.) so it is really nice when it is snowing and in the negatives. It really pumps out the heat. Here's our stove, made by Osburn (http://www.osburn-mfg.com/):

I am really happy with it.

Yeah, ours runs 24/7 through the heart of our Vermont winters (November through mid-April and just like you, ours is right in the main part of the house and keeps everything nice & toasty even when it's -20 outside. :thumbs up

Ours is a Vermont Castings (natch!) Defiant/Encore model--circa 1986.

You're in the cold & snowy part of MD, eh? Garrett Co.? I'm always impressed with the snowfall totals from that area. You come close to our Vermont totals!
